The golf industry must officially recognize that it is on a collision course with the attacks of golf-hating / anti-pesticide organizations, jurisdictions, and institutions that are demanding a revocation of the golf industry’s pesticide ban exception status.

These organizations, jurisdictions, and institutions are filled with golf-hating, anti-pesticide, and science-hating fanatжcs; and others, like Golf Canada and IPM Council, have become « useful idiots » that naively support these fanatжcs.

The golf industry must plan for the inevitable and total revocation of its exception status in most jurisdictions across Canada.

This catastrophe is becoming increasingly probable on a large scale.

The end is near.

Decades ago, attacks against the golf industry began with the needless, senseless, & malicious prohibitions against DDT insecticide and mercury fungicides.

Since the mid-2000s, these organizations, jurisdictions, and institutions ( which are listed below ) have set their sights on the annihilation of the golf industry by demanding a revocation of its pesticide ban exception status, mindless enviro-lunatжc attacks, and ⁄ or have conspired to impose reckless and arbitrary prohibition against conventional pest control products.

Golf course superintendents are not paid to be activists  ―  universally, these superintendent are professionals who are paid to take care of golf courses  ―  they manage the budgets, man-power, materials, and schedules needed to properly maintain high-quality playing conditions and aesthetics for paying golfers.  Superintendents constantly monitor the health of turfgrasses through careful observation, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, insects, weeds, and abiotic disorders.  Their skilled management of turfgrass pests is accomplished by the proper use of conventional pest control products.  Unfortunately, some golf facilities are infested with « activist-superintendents », and even « activist-general-managers ».  These types of activists represent the greatest threats to the golf industry today. After decades of benefiting from the golf industry’s pesticide ban exception status, activist-superintendents have ridiculously decided to self-impose their own pesticide bans.  Observers are aghast that activist-superintendents are invalidating the pesticide ban exception status that allowed the golf industry to avoid being subjected to anti-pesticide prohibition for a generation, thanks to the unbelievable lobbying by Mr William H Gathercole in the 1990s.  These activists simply do not deserve to work in the golf industry that they betray.  Golf course superintendents ( and general-managers ) are not paid to be activists  ―  they are paid to satisfy paying golfers with high-quality playing conditions and aesthetics.

Since 1991, the golf industry throughout the nation had been provided with a pesticide ban exception status   ―   thankfully, Mr William H Gathercole crafted the original golf industry exception status in the town of Hudson, Quebec, which has been duplicated in virtually all jurisdictions throughout North America.

Now, the golf industry is being JEOPARDIZED by prohibitions against its desperately-needed conventional pest control products.

To avoid its imminent demise, and the total loss of all of its conventional pest control products, the golf industry must immediately address all of the critical issues facing the golf industry.  ( See links below. )

Government officials may consider imposing prohibition against the golf industry once they realize the fact that, according to a study in Manitoba, up to 6 per cent of ALL conventional pest control products are used for golf course maintenance.

Interestingly, golf facilities often employ THE VERY SAME conventional pest control products that are used to control invasive weeds and damaging insects on municipal and residential properties, which are currently prohibited in many jurisdictions.

The golf industry must DEVELOP and publish golf maintenance protocols and performance standards concerning the regular use of conventional pest control products and fertilizers, based upon REAL scientific research.

These protocols and performance standards must DISAVOW the use of inferior green alternative pesticides, the ineffective practices of Integrated Pest Management ( IPM ), and the bogus doctrines of fertilizer nutrient reduction.

The intensity of disease activity MAY be suppressed, but NOT controlled, with correct mowing practices.

One of the most important golf maintenance protocols is Turf Species Transition.

All golf facilities must be expected to transition their putting greens from annual bluegrass to creeping bentgrass.

Improved varieties of creeping bentgrass are more resistant to pests than annual bluegrass, an invasive grass species that is highly susceptible to pests and requires the use of more pest control products.

Annual bluegrass is also more susceptible to abiotic disorders, such as winter injury and summer stress.

For the most part, lobbying campaigns by the trade associations is virtually NIL   ―   overall, they are NOT adequately defending the golf industry from attacks against pest control products.

Most have NOT addressed ANY of critical issues facing the golf industry.

There ARE some notable and occasional exceptions, such as Alberta Golf Industry Association, National Golf Course Owners Association ( NGCOA ), and Western Canada Turfgrass Association ( WCTA ), that have made serious attempts with their lobbying campaigns.

However, NO trade association has mounted an effective and comprehensive lobbying campaign against arbitrary prohibitions targeting pest control products.

Furthermore, NO ONE in any trade associations has ANY professional expertise for lobbying against prohibitions.

These fanatжcs will NEVER reverse their attitudes against conventional pest control products.

The golf industry’s trade associations must defend the golf superintendents and their facilities.

« Activist-superintendents » and « activist-general-managers » represent the GREATEST THREATS to the golf industry today.  After decades of benefiting from the golf industry’s pesticide ban exception status, activist-superintendents have ridiculously decided to self-impose their own pesticide bans and convert their golf courses to pseudo « organic ».  Observers are aghast that activist-superintendents are invalidating & attacking the pesticide ban exception status that allowed the golf industry to avoid being subjected to anti-pesticide prohibition for a generation, thanks to the unbelievable lobbying by Mr William H Gathercole in the 1990s.  These activists simply DO NOT deserve to work in the golf industry that they betray.  Golf course superintendents ( & general-managers ) are not paid to be « organic » activists  ―  they are paid to satisfy paying golfers with high-quality playing conditions & aesthetics.

Without conventional pest control products, « organic » golf courses become PEST-INFESTED & UNPLAYABLE GARBAGE DUMPS.  It is IMPOSSIBLE to keep high-quality playing conditions & aesthetics by using so-called « organic » green alternative pesticides and practices.  Alternative methods of pest control are INFERIOR, INEFFECTIVE, and CANNOT BE RELIED UPON to properly maintain ANY golf course.

Golf-hating fanatжcs, like David Suzuki, are falsely-alleging that « organic » has become a major trend in the golf industry.  There are approximately two thousand golf courses across Canada.  There are three, yes THREE, known so-called organic golf courses in Canada. Blackburn Meadows Golf Club, Brigadoon Golf Course, and Fiddler’s Green Golf Course.  ( See links below. )  Two of these « organic » golf facilities are now bankrupt, closed, and⁄or gone.  One facility may actually be lying.  Pesticide-free golf maintenance is IMPOSSIBLE, and can only lead to catastrophic playing conditions and business failures.  These types of courses often DO NOT have high-quality playing conditions & aesthetics, which are unacceptable for paying players.  There will be a lot of unhappy golfers, and bankrupt golf businesses, if the golf industry goes pesticide-free.

The golf industry must ESTABLISH policies for expelling from its trade associations those superintendents and golf facilities that use inaccurate and mis-leading terms like « organic ».

Providing players with high-quality conditions and aesthetics CANNOT be successful with inferior green alternative pesticides and ineffective sustainable « organic » practices.

Additionally, the golf industry must VIGOROUSLY EMBARK on a massive public relations campaign to discredit « organic » pesticide-free maintenance practices, declaring them as DISMAL FAILURES.
