According to some municipal officials, golf courses should be closed because they do not bring in enough revenue.
Since when does a city-operated golf course have to make a profit ?!?!
Are all recreational facilities expected to make a profit ?!?!
Aquatic facilities, arenas, community centres, driving range, fitness centres, gardens, golf courses, marinas, orchards, parks, pickleball courts, rinks, rugby and other sports fields, and trails.
All of these city-operated facilities are expected to make a profit ?!?!
Really ?!?!
REALLY ?!?!
And what about city-operated transit services ?!?!
Are municipal transit services expected to make a profit ?!?!
Only one-third of municipal transit is financed by riders.
The remaining two-thirds needs to come from the municipal tax base.
Again … are municipal transit services expected to make a profit ?!?!
No !
Definitely no !
In fact, there is NO municipal service or business that is ever expected to make a profit.
Sadly, tax-payers have NEVER expected municipal officials to competently and profitably manage any city-owned business.
Rather than obliterate golf course, perhaps elected officials should consider having municipal golf courses managed by contract professionals.
Nonetheless, why do city-owned golf courses have to make a profit ?!?!
Not surprisingly, the REAL issue is NOT profitability.
The REAL issue is that municipal officials truly hate and despise the game of golf.
Their acts of municipal subversion will obliterate the golf industry.

The results of the election may obliterate the golf industry in Toronto.

Jennifer Keesmaat was a government official in Toronto as Chief City Planner who announced her candidacy for mayor on July 27th, 2018.
She truly hates of the game of golf.
Golf-hating Keesmaat has said that three of the five city-owned golf courses should be shut down because they do not bring in enough revenue.
If elected, her acts of municipal subversion against the golf industry would apply to the Dentonia Park, Don Valley, and Scarlett Woods golf courses, which she said are running at a net loss « amid ongoing trends of declining usage ».
According to golf-hating and profit-obsessed Keesmaat ―
Today, our golf courses operate at a loss. [ So what ?!?! ]
They’re only accessible through a fee, and not only that, they’re only used half of the year.
The usage has been declining.
They’re operating at a subsidy and a net loss in our city. [ So what ?!?! ]
We should be looking to the future and proposing uses that create spaces for everyone in our city and recognizing that our communities are changing, and the types of things that we do in our public space ought to be changing, too. [ … by obliterating golf courses ?!?! ]
Golf-hating Keesmaat said that under her plan, proposals would be developed through [ mock ] public consultations.
She said each site would address gaps in services and amenities based on residents’ [ mock ] feed-back.
According to golf-hating Keesmaat ―
We have this incredible opportunity to use our city-owned resources to ensure that we’re creating spaces for new arenas and cricket patches and bike trails and skating rinks and cross-country skiing trails. [ … by obliterating golf courses ?!?! ]
[ All of these recreational facilities will NEVER make a profit ! ]
We can do this [ … obliterate ] golf courses that are on transit corridors.
A spokes-person for Keesmaat has stated that her proposal [ to obliterate golf courses ] would only see recreation uses contemplated and no residential units.
Nonetheless, Keesmat’s acts of municipal subversion will obliterate the golf industry.

Toronto Background Report
According to a Toronto Background Report, municipal staff stated that golf participation has been declining.
In 2007, there were approximately 187,000 rounds of golf played at city-owned courses, compared to less than 158,000 in 2016 — a decrease of 15.5 per cent.
Officials said this has been largely driven by the increasing number of golf courses in the Greater Toronto Area.
City staff stated that golf operations mean a net loss to the city annually.
In order to counter visitor trends and be financially viable, officials said the courses needed be « competitive » with course quality, membership pricing, food, drink, and ancillary services.
The Toronto Background Report said a regular season at city of Toronto golf courses sees about $5,000,000 in revenue but rainy seasons, such as 2017, see about a decline of about $500,000.
According to the Toronto Background Report ―
It is anticipated that without significant investment in city-run golf courses, this downward trend in rounds is expected to continue.

John Tory is the incumbent Mayor of Toronto, first elected in 2014.
When asked about Keesmaat’s proposal, Mayor John Tory cited an external review being done by the city of Toronto of its golf operations.
The consultant is looking at the affordability of accessing the courses, visitor demographics, attendance trends, and the possibility of using the courses during the winter.
He said the golf courses have an important environmental role to play.
According to Mr Tory ―
The golf courses can be, and are, a contributor to our ravine strategy and to our tree canopy strategy.
Mr Tory said he hoped the change of use [ i.e. the obliteration of golf courses ] wouldn’t mean condo towers at any of the properties.
The five courses are designated as parkland and are protected under Toronto’s Ravine and Natural Feature Protection By-Law.

Mayoral candidate Saron Gebresellassi has stated that she is AGAINST spending money on converting the golf courses.
She said any money potentially spent on the initiative should be re-directed toward affordable housing for residents.
According to Ms Gebresellassi ―
The priority for people in the city of Toronto is affordable housing … I am on a very different page from Jennifer Keesmaat in this respect.
Ms Gebresellassi added that Indigenous communities should be consulted on any possible changes.
Earlier this year, Toronto city council extended a private-sector operating agreement for the three golf courses — plus the Humber Valley and Tam O’Shanter courses — until the end of November 2019.
Currently, the golf courses are maintained by city of Toronto staff, while ticketing, golf cart rentals, pro shops and food and beverage operations are contracted out.
