CGSA Has Been Taken-Over By Golf Course Owners
TAKE-OVER
In fall 2017, it was announced Jeff Calderwood, the CEO of the National Golf Course Owners Association [ NGCOA ], would TAKE-OVER the Canadian Golf Course Superintendents Association [ CGSA ] as executive director.
Should CGSA leaders have been trusted to avoid the trade association’s unavoidable train wreck crisis ?!?!
Some CGSA Decision-Makers Were
Employed By Chapter Members Of NGCOA
CGSA BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Evidently, this take-over was approved by the CGSA Board of Directors.
Why was a very small group of decision-makers, 10 CGSA directors, allowed to make a settlement that would unravel a 50-year legacy, and that would influence 1000s of people in the golf industry ?!?!
Was there a conflict-of-interest with decision-makers regarding the CGSA take-over ?!?!
Was this the reason why CGSA did not see a crisis ?!?!
JAMES FLETT
For example, when the take-over was approved, James Flett served as CGSA President.
Flett was also employed as superintendent at Muskoka Lakes Golf & Country Club, which is a Chapter Member of NGCOA.
Was there a conflict-of-interest with Flett regarding the take-over of CGSA by NGCOA ?!?!
Was Flett the reason why CGSA did not see a crisis ?!?!
JOHN McLINDEN
Another example ― John McLinden served as CGSA Ontario Director at CGSA. McLinden was also employed as superintendent at Ladies Golf Club of Toronto, which is a Chapter Member of NGCOA.
Was there a conflict-of-interest with McLinden regarding the take-over of CGSA by NGCOA ?!?!
Was McLinden the reason why CGSA did not see a crisis ?!?!
RECUSAL
Did both Flett and McLinden recuse themselves from the decision-making process ?!?!
Was the take-over decision tainted by Flett and McLinden ?!?!
Was this the reason why CGSA did not see a crisis ?!?!
CGSA Continues To Be Incapable
Of Making Any Correct Decisions

Additionally, why wasn’t a decision of this magnitude ratified by a vote from the general membership ?!?!
Perhaps the CGSA take-over decision will be declared null and void until the general membership can examine the alleged conflicts-of-interests, as well as all other information.
Will the general membership expose why CGSA did not see a crisis ?!?!
Will the general membership find explanations as to why the CGSA’s 50-year legacy has been unilaterally unraveled ?!?!

NOT All Superintendents Are Happy That
CGSA Has Been Taken-Over By NGCOA
Reaction to the take-over crisis has been mixed.
Golf Industry Network.Ca received a number of calls and spoken with people during a recent Golf Industry Expo show, and it appears NOT all superintendents are happy with this appointment.
One superintendent said ―
His taking the position to head both organizations is a clear CONFLICT-OF-INTEREST and really stems from the CGSA having NO ABILITY to support the structure they created out of a DESIRE OF SELF-IMPORTANCE.
Another superintendent stated ―
Many of us report to the golf course owner and Calderwood works for them.
HOW MUCH SUPPORT are we really going to have with this set-up ?!?!
Finally, a few believe Calderwood is just going to LEVERAGE the golf course superintendents with PROGRAMS THAT BENEFIT THE OWNERS.
Unlike the other golf associations, there are a few other turf associations in Canada that are open to memberships for superintendents.
It will be interesting to see how the current membership in the CGSA reacts to the take-over crisis, and if the NGCOA will be able to show value and support.

$100,000 Financial Mis-Management
Preceded The NGCOA Take-Over
For the Canadian Golf Superintendents Association, they have been without an executive director for some time.
In 2016, Canadian Golf Superintendents Association announced it was conducting a complete review of its operations.
The review came on the heels of a deficit-crisis of more than $100,000 the association ran up in its 2014 fiscal year.
The CGSA executive director, Ken Cousineau, was terminated by the association.
Cousineau’s departure from CGSA was a welcome relief !
Was the financial mis-management crisis of CGSA the ultimate reason for its take-over by NGCOA in 2017 ?!?!
Additionally, why wasn’t a decision of this magnitude ratified by a vote from the general membership ?!?!
Future generations will ask CGSA …

The golf industry must PLAN for the inevitable and total revocation of its exception status in most jurisdictions across Canada.
This catastrophe is becoming INCREASINGLY PROBABLE on a large scale.
Government officials may consider imposing prohibition against the golf industry once they realize the fact that up to 6 per cent of ALL conventional pest control products are used for golf course maintenance.
Interestingly, golf facilities often employ THE VERY SAME conventional pest control products that are used to control invasive weeds and damaging insects on municipal and residential properties, which are currently prohibited in many jurisdictions.

12. Maintenance Protocols

The golf industry must DEVELOP and publish golf maintenance protocols and performance standards concerning the regular use of conventional pest control products and fertilizers, based upon REAL scientific research.
These protocols and performance standards must DISAVOW the use of inferior green alternative pesticides, the ineffective practices of Integrated Pest Management ( IPM ), and the bogus doctrines of fertilizer nutrient reduction.
The intensity of disease activity MAY be suppressed with correct mowing practices.
One of the most important golf maintenance protocols is Turf Species Transition.
All golf facilities must be expected to transition their putting greens from annual bluegrass to creeping bentgrass.
Improved varieties of creeping bentgrass are more resistant to pests than annual bluegrass, an invasive grass species that is highly susceptible to pests and requires the use of more pest control products.
Annual bluegrass is also more susceptible to abiotic disorders, such as winter injury and summer stress.
