PROHIBITION ] on the use of chemical pesticides in the home, garden, and recreational facilities, such as parks and GOLF COURSES, until the SCIENTIFIC AND MEDICAL EVIDENCE SHOWING THAT SUCH USE IS SAFE has been presented to Parliament and confirmed in a report prepared by a parliamentary committee.

The bill seeks to put the reverse onus on the chemical companies for them to prove the product is safe, instead of putting the onus on the individual to try to prove that the product is dangerous, an impossible test in many areas.

Mr. Speaker, in back yards and school yards, parks, gardens and green spaces across Canada a TOXIC COCKTAIL OF CANCER causing chemicals are being used to kill weeds, and pests. [ WRONG ! ]

The following is a list of the causes of human deaths world-wide, arranged by their associated mortality rates … • heart disease 30% • cancer 25% • chronic lower respiratory diseases 5% • accidents ( unintentional injuries ) 5% • stroke ( cerebrovascular diseases ) 5% • alzheimer’s disease • diabetes • influenza & pneumonia • nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, & nephrosis • intentional self-harm ( suicide ). There are thousands of known deaths per year from known cancer-causing factors such as unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, excess body weight, alcohol consumption, and over-exposure to the sun. Pesticides that in many cases may have life altering implications not just in the near term, but decades down the road, such as immune system damage [ WRONG ! ], reproductive damage [ WRONG ! ], skeletal abnormalities [ WRONG ! ], skin damage [ WRONG ! ], and cancer [ WRONG ! ].
As the CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY has said, and I quote ―
« Since the ornamental use of pesticides has no countervailing health benefit and has the potential to cause harm [ WRONG ! ], we call for a ban on the use of pesticides on lawns and gardens. » [ WRONG ! ]
[ Canadian Cancer Society’s own web-sites state repeatedly that scientific research does NOT provide a conclusive link between pest control products and cancer. http://wp.me/P1jq40-4qC There is NOT ONE known cancer death from the proper use of pest control products used in the urban landscape. And after its 10-year anti-pesticide campaign that cost millions of dollars, Canadian Cancer Society has NOT stopped even one case of cancer caused by these products. ]
So Mr. Speaker, why does the federal government continue to allow these cancer-causing pesticides to be used ? [ ?!?! ]
These chemicals are seeping into our soil [ WRONG ! ], leaching into the water we drink [ WRONG ! ], being absorbed by our homes [ WRONG ! ], harming our bodies and claiming the lives of our CHILDREN [ WRONG ! ].
[ CHILDREN ARE SAFE WITH PESTICIDES ! Pest control products represent NO threat to children since they are scientifically-safe and will cause NO harm. There is no need for New Democrats to recklessly conspire to impose arbitrary prohibition against pest control products used in the urban landscape. Leading scientific experts, like Dr Katherine von Stackelberg, say they would NOT hesitate to let their children play on a lawn where lawn care products have been used as long as the products were applied according to label directions. http://tinyurl.com/mw2fu7u According to another leading expert, Dr James S Bus, there is NO evidence that common lawn herbicides like 2,4-D cause cancer or any health problems in children. Just as the government oversees and regulates the use of drugs, the use of pesticides must be held to similar government oversight. [ ?!?! ]
