Have Harmed Honeybee Colonies
While evidence mounts [ ?!?! ] that Neonicotinoid Insecticides are contributing to the losses of honeybees, research from the University of Guelph suggests there is LITTLE EVIDENCE that they will impact bee populations at a colony level.
Scientists at the University of Guelph found that while three common insecticides produced by Bayer and Syngenta can harm individual honeybees, there is NO EVIDENCE linking them to the major losses seen in honeybee populations in recent years.
According to Dr Keith Ross Solomon, Emeritus Environmental Professor ―
Use of these neonics under GOOD AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES DOES NOT PRESENT A RISK TO HONEYBEES at the level of the colony.
GOOD AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES include making sure seeds are coated and planted properly, to reduce the possible contamination of bees.
Neonicotinoid Insecticides are typically used by farmers to keep their crops free of insect pests.
Insecticides studied by scientists at the University of Guelph included THIAMETHOXAM, which is produced by Syngenta, and the Bayer-made CLOTHIANIDIN and IMIDACLOPRID.
The findings were based on 64 published papers and 170 unpublished studies and reports which were commissioned by the manufacturers of the insecticides.
Dr Solomon, and Adjunct Professor Gloria Stephenson, found that NONE OF THE STUDIES SHOWED THAT THE INSECTICIDES HAVE HARMED HONEYBEE COLONIES.
The research has been published in this month’s edition of the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health-B.
In September 2017, a group of activist-scientists called on the Canadian government to NATIONALLY PROHIBIT the use of all Neonicotinoid Insecticides due to their supposed effect on honeybees.

On Honeybee Colonies From The Three
Common Neonicotinoid Insecticides
The three most widely-used Neonicotinoid Insecticides for flowering crops POSE NO RISK TO HONEYBEE COLONIES when used correctly as seed treatments, according to new studies by scientists at the University of Guelph.
Amid mounting [ fake-news ] controversy over use of Neonicotinoid Insecticides [ a.k.a. neonics ] and [ supposed ] declining bee population, an analysis by scientists at the University of Guelph of previously unpublished studies and reports was commissioned by agri-chemical companies Bayer and Syngenta ― as well as published papers from the scientific literature.
The analysis by scientists at the University of Guelph showed NO SIGNIFICANT ILL EFFECTS ON HONEYBEE COLONIES from the three common Neonicotinoid Insecticides.
The findings are described in five papers published by Dr Keith Ross Solomon, a Toxicologist and Emeritus Professor with the School of Environmental Sciences and Adjunct Professor Gladys Stephenson in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health-B.
The duo analyzed 170 unpublished studies that Syngenta and Bayer had submitted to regulatory agencies.
They also included 64 papers from the open, peer-reviewed literature on the topic.
Acknowledging that these three Neonicotinoid Insecticides can kill individual honeybees, and may also pose a threat to other pollinators, Dr Solomon said ―
At least for honeybees, these products are NOT A MAJOR CONCERN.
Use of these neonics under good agricultural practices DOES NOT PRESENT A RISK TO HONEYBEES at the level of the colony.
The scientists at the University of Guelph were asked by Bayer and Syngenta to assess earlier studies conducted by or for the companies on impacts of insecticide-treated seeds on honeybees.
They conducted weight of evidence assessments, an approach developed specifically for these studies that is intended to gauge the quality of reported data and to compare relevance of results from different studies.
The companies wished to respond to controversy and inconclusive evidence about the potential harm posed to pollinators by Neonicotinoid Insecticides, said Solomon.
All insecticides in Canada must be registered with the Pest Management Regulatory Agency.
The study involved three insecticides ― CLOTHIANIDIN and IMIDACLOPRID made by Bayer, and THIAMETHOXAM made by Syngenta ― that are used in seed treatments for various field crops.
Solomon said the original papers varied in quality and scientific rigour, but their results generally showed NO ADVERSE EFFECTS of insecticides on honeybee hives.
According to Dr Solomon ―
Many studies look at effects of insecticides on individual bees.
What regulations try to protect is the colony ― the reproductive unit.
Dr Solomon said other scientists might use their results to improve studies of insecticide exposure in hives.
The scientists at the University of Guelph stressed the importance of « good agricultural practices » including ensuring that seeds are coated and planted properly to avoid airborne contamination of bees during field seeding.
Dr Solomon said their results do NOT necessarily apply to other insects that also serve as crop pollinators and that have shown population declines.
For those pollinators, Dr Solomon said ―
There are too few studies at the colony or field level to allow a weight of evidence analysis.
The scientists at the University of Guelph said bees and other pollinators are affected by [ several ] potentially harmful factors, including ―
• insufficient food
• long-distance movement of colonies for crop pollination
• mites
• varying beekeeping practices
• viruses
• weather

He is a Fellow of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences and received the 2002 American Chemical Society International Award for Research in Agrochemicals.
