NO Neonicotinoid PROHIBITION In Canada
Unlike Europe, which has moved to PROHIBIT Neonicotinoid Insecticides [ a.k.a. Neonics ], the Government of Canada said, in an e-mail to Canadian Broadcasting Corporation ( CBC ) ―
We [ Government of Canada ] DO NOT FEEL a suspension [ of Neonicotinoid Insecticides ] is warranted at this time.
Within the Government of Canada, Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency is responsible for administering Neonicotinoid Insecticides under the Pest Control Products Act on behalf of the Minister of Health.
At Pest Management Regulatory Agency, before a Neonicotinoid Insecticide is allowed to be used or sold in Canada, it must UNDERGO A RIGOROUS SCIENTIFIC ASSESSMENT PROCESS which provides reasonable certainty that NO HARM WILL OCCUR, including chronic effects such as cancer, when pesticides are used according to label directions.
Pest Management Regulatory Authority has publicly raised concerns about the pesticide, and its possible effect on bees in the corn-growing regions of Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba.
Pest Management Regulatory Agency said its research shows ―
The use of neonicotinoid treated corn and soybean seed are affecting the environment due to their impact on bees and other pollinators.
It found that about 70 per cent of dead bee samples tested positive for Neonicotinoid residue, whereas the chemical was detected in one sample of unaffected bees.
However, only A VERY LIMITED NUMBER of Bee-Keepers report losses, LESS THAN 1 PER CENT of all Bee-Keepers.
Pest Management Regulatory Agency said ―
We concluded that the majority of pollinator mortalities were a result of EXPOSURE to Neonicotinoid Insecticides.
