Sir William Richard Shaboe Doll ( 1912 – 2005 ) was the British author ( with Sir Austin Bradford Hill ) behind the momentous 1950 study « Smoking and Carcinoma of the Lung » in the British Medical Journal.

Dr. J. Gordon Edwards ( 1919 – 2004 ) was an Entomologist, Author, and Professor, and later Emeritus Professor of Biology, San Jose State University.

In 1971, Dr. Edwards was pictured on the cover of Esquire EATING DDT. Edwards was so convinced of the safety of DDT, he took to eating a spoonful of it in front of his classes and never experienced the traumatic effects Rachel Carson’s book warned about. Until his death, Edwards advocated the use of DDT to save Third World Countries from the devastating effects of malaria and diseases like Typhus and West Nile Virus.

And there are many naturally occurring compounds in food that can cause cancer at some dose. Psoralens in celery, aflatoxins in various moulds and all sorts of naturally occurring compounds of arsenic, chromium and selenium cause cancer at some dose. So EQUATING PESTICIDES WITH CARCINOGENS IS INCORRECT. When it comes to pesticide residues the question to ask is not whether they are there or not, because with our sophisticated techniques these days we can detect unbelievably small amounts.

STEPHENSON, Gerald R. ― Doctor
Dr. Gerald R. Stephenson is Professor, Department of Environmental Biology, University of Guelph.
Dr. Stephenson was appointed Director of Education, Weed Science Society of America, and Vice-Chair, Ontario Pesticides Advisory Committee.
He is an author of several books, and has contributed to books related to topics such as pesticide biochemistry, pesticides and human health, and pest management in agricultural, forestry and landscape environments.
In August 1984, according to Dr. Stephenson ( with Mark K. Sears and Dean G. Thompson ) ―
In field studies … less than 5 per cent of [ 2,4-D Herbicide ] originally applied could be dislodged with a cheese-cloth wipe at day 0. DISAPPEARANCE OF DISLODGEABLE RESIDUES WAS VERY RAPID. Less than 0.01 per cent of the applied chemical was dislodgeable after 1 day in turf that received 18 mm of rainfall 1 hour after spraying. Residues in turfgrass that received no rainfall required 7 days to dissipate to the same level. In a study in which the clippings were not removed, the disappearance of dislodgeable residues, when the turf was mowed at 3, 7, and 11 days after application, was nearly as rapid as in unmowed turf.

SWITZER, Clayton M. ― Doctor
Dr. Clayton M. Switzer was Professor at the University of Guelph, and former Dean of the Ontario Agricultural College.
He completed his Master’s Degree in Plant Physiology, and later earned his PhD Degree from Iowa State University.
In 1955, Dr. Switzer began teaching at Ontario Agricultural College in the Department of Botany.
He spent 29 years at the college, including 11 years as Dean.
Since 1964, Ontario Agricultural College has been affiliated with University of Guelph.
In 1983, Switzer became Ontario’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture, a position he held for six years.
Switzer was also is President of the Ontario Institute of Agrologists, and is a Member of the Canadian and Ontario Agricultural Halls of Fame.

The 350 EXPERT SCIENTISTS at HEALTH CANADA
Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency ( PMRA ) regulates pest control products in Canada.
It employs 350 expert-scientists whose job is to assess pest control products.
These expert-scientists include ― biologists, chemists, entomologists, epidemiologists, plant pathologists, toxicologists, and weed scientists.
These expert-scientists help ensure that only pest control products that meet the strict health and environmental standards outlined by the PMRA are registered for use or sale in Canada.

The process to have a pesticide registered in Canada can take an average of nearly 10 years and costs over 256 million dollars. That’s a big investment, so the manufacturers ensure the products they submit for registration are safe and work the way they are intended to.
The PMRA assessments not only ensure that these products work, they also make sure they will not affect species that are not the intended target.
The PMRA also keeps track of any research on the products from international organizations, and each product must be re-evaluated at least every 15 years to ensure its continued safety.

The 1600 EXPERT SCIENTISTS at U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ) regulates pest control products nationally under the authority of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act ( FIFRA ) and other laws to register pest control products, educate applicators, monitor compliance, and investigate problems.
EPA employs 1,600 expert-scientists such as chemists, engineers, toxicologists, and experts in many other fields of science.
EPA conducts ecological risk assessments to determine what risks are posed by pest control products, and whether changes to the use or proposed use are necessary to protect the environment.

Dr. Elizabeth M. Whelan is President of the American Council on Science and Health ( ACSH ) and a member of its Board of Trustees.

She has a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the Yale School of Medicine, a Master of Science from the Harvard School of Public Health, and a Doctor of Science from the Harvard School of Public Health.
