Anti-Pesticide Activists CONSPIRE to PROHIBIT against pest control products that are, in fact, GOVERNMENT-APPROVED, FEDERALLY-LEGAL, SCIENTIFICALLY-SAFE, PRACTICALLY-NON-TOXIC, and CAUSE NO HARM.
Pest control products are one of the PRIMARY TOOLS OF HEALTH AND PROSPERITY in the era of the 20th and 21st Century.
Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION has been FORCING A RELIANCE on products and practices that are NOT SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT from those used in 1927 … and even the late 1800s.
In several jurisdictions across North America, Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION is VALIDATED not on the basis of scientific evidence, but rather a VAGUE MOCK UNEASE about chemicals in general.

ANTI-PESTICIDE PROHIBITION IS A DISMAL FAILURE
Some argue that the reason for PROHIBITION ( a.k.a. BANS ) is that pest control products are somehow deemed to be unnecessary.
If that were in fact the case, it is difficult to understand why every PROHIBITION across the nation contains a list of EXEMPTED PRODUCTS ( a.k.a. Green Alternative Pesticides ), and every PROHIBITION provides an EXCEPTION STATUS to the Golf Industry.
If they were truly unnecessary, would not ALL pest control products be PROHIBITED for those uses ?
Green Alternative Pesticides are usually LESS TESTED as well, raising the prospect that they are NOT ANY SAFER OR BETTER THAN conventional products, and are, in fact, DISMAL FAILURES.
The Golf Industry enjoys the benefits from an EXCEPTION STATUS despite the fact that it uses the VERY SAME INGREDIENTS employed in Professional Lawn Care maintenance.
The Golf Industry is in a VULNERABLE position regarding pest control products.
In fact, Professional Lawn Care maintenance requires LESS PESTICIDE-INPUTS than Golf Course turf.
If it is safe to walk and play on a pesticide-treated golf course putting green, it is also safe to walk on a pesticide-treated lawn.
The Golf Industry has tried to defend its EXCEPTION STATUS on the basis that the need for high-quality PLAYING CONDITIONS supersedes COSMETIC STANDARDS, especially if Integrated Pest Management ( IPM ) is used.
The Professional Lawn Care Industry also used IPM as a public affairs tool, and failed to defend itself from prohibitionist policies.
Additionally, Integrated Pest Management has been designed to be applicable to the Agriculture Industry, and NOT the Green Space Industry.
Integrated Pest Management is a FAILED STRATEGY !
Unfortunately, some provincial and municipal governments will NOT provide an EXCEPTION STATUS to the Golf Industry !

Government Officials who ARBITRARILY PROHIBIT conventional pest control products FAIL TO PROVIDE viable, efficacious, economical, practical and/or low-risk alternatives.
This situation has forced DESPERATE home-owners and businesses operating in the Lawn Care Industry to unwisely use products that were/are ILLEGAL in order to achieve adequate pest control.
Green Alternative Pesticides are INEFFECTIVE, INADEQUATE, HIGH-RISK, INEFFECTIVE, MORE TOXIC, STUNNINGLY EXPENSIVE, and OVERWHELMINGLY CONDEMNED.
Green Alternatives DO NOT WORK !
It is WRONGLY ASSUMED THAT ALTERNATIVES are somehow safer and work as well as conventional products.
By definition, ALTERNATIVES ARE INFERIOR, which is why they did not win the market-place originally.
Alternative products are usually LESS TESTED as well, raising the prospect that they are NOT ANY SAFER OR BETTER THAN conventional products, and are, in fact, DISMAL FAILURES.
It is IMPOSSIBLE for home-owners or professionals to keep their properties beautiful and safe by using Green Alternatives.

According to the owner of a Professional Lawn Care Franchise ―
Banning pest control products HAS ENCOURAGED individuals to substitute the banned product for MORE TOXIC AND MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY HAZARDOUS ALTERNATIVES.
With franchise locations across the country, we get a very good and accurate report of what is happening out there in the field.
People paying higher property taxes every year will simply not sit by and let their property values go down.
People want and need nice green spaces, and that make them feel good about their life, their family and their environment,
People want and need nice green spaces in order to create a society of happier people.
By banning pest control products, people are now feeling that they are in a dictatorship.
People have their backs up against the wall, and are wondering what is next that they will be told to do for no good reason.
What else will be taken away for no good reason ?
If the government can do what they have done, then there really is no limit here, and that is the start of the back-lash that we now hear.
By banning pest control products, individuals using MORE TOXIC AND MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY HAZARDOUS ALTERNATIVES like BORAX and SOAP for the control of ants.
This is a so-called recommended green alternative !
I called the Borax people to ask what is its PERSISTENCE IN THE ENVIRONMENT, and they say they have NO IDEA, and do not test for that.
The Borax people asked why on earth are you putting it on turf because it is not for that in any way.
By banning pest control products, people have used products they have brought back from the U.S. that are MUCH STRONGER than Canadian-registered products.
By banning pest control products, people are using bleach, gas, turpentine and many other HOUSEHOLD CONCOCTIONS to fight pests of turf.
Minimal use of a proven-to-be-safe registered product is a MUCH MUCH MUCH BETTER WAY TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT.
By banning pest control products, a BLACK MARKET FOR HAZARDOUS PRODUCTS has developed.
These BLACK MARKET PRODUCTS harm the environment like no tomorrow.

In 2011, a BC POLL conducted by Canadian Consumer Specialty Products Association ( CCSPA ) showed that the VAST MAJORITY of residents are OPPOSED to a PROPOSED PROHIBITION against the use conventional pest control products, and they actually FAVOUR the continued use of these products around their homes and in public green spaces.
In 2011, an Ontario POLL showed that the public REJECTS PESTICIDE BANS, and MORE THAN HALF of Ontario residents believed that the provincial government DID NOT DO THE RIGHT THING BY IMPOSING AN ARBITRARY PESTICIDE BAN. Ontario residents WOULD RATHER HAVE THE BAN SCRAPPED OR MODIFIED.
In February 2013, Canadian Association Of Agri-Retailers ( CAAR ) said there is QUESTIONABLE PUBLIC SUPPORT for PROHIBITION against the use of pest control products.
In February 2013, a POLL conducted by Winnipeg Free Press showed that 60 PER CENT OF THE PUBLIC WERE OPPOSED TO PROHIBITION.
In Fall 2012, Professional Lawn Care businesses and clients sent to Manitoba Government Officials the results of a PETITION with 2,500 POST-CARDS OPPOSING A PROPOSED PROHIBITION, which was OVERWHELMING OPPOSITION to Anti-Pesticide Activists who had a MERE 1,000 signatures supporting PROHIBITION, with most signatures ORIGINATING FROM OUTSIDE MANITOBA.
The ONLY people who want PESTICIDE BANS are a SMALL GROUP of Anti-Pesticide Lunatics with VESTED INTERESTS IN CONCOCTING IMAGINARY DANGER against pest control products.
Anti-Pesticide POLLS paid for by lunatics in order to validate PROHIBITION appear to have been conducted by DRUNKEN IRRESPONSIBLE DEAD-BEATS.
In 2011, one of the principal organizers of the Anti-Pesticide POLLS for Canadian Cancer Society was charged with ● impaired operation of a vehicle with « a deadly blood alcohol level » ● failing a breath test ● failing to remain at the scene of an accident.
There is a growing body of evidence that Anti-Pesticide POLLS have NO VALIDITY WHATSOEVER.

LYING AND CHEATING WITH MOSTLY ILLEGAL PRODUCTS
Residents will CIRCUMVENT PROHIBITION because there were/are NO valid economical alternatives to replace the prohibited products.
Many residents simply HOARDED or STOCK-PILED products prior to PROHIBITION, and are using them as they see fit ― correctly or incorrectly ― we will never know, since it is now out of reach of provincial over-sight and regulation that licensed applicators and businesses needed to obey.
So the misuse of pest control products remains ― and PROHIBITION has ENSURED this.
Residents routinely CHEAT not only by using HOARDING OR STOCK-PILING PRODUCTS, but also CHEAT by using ILLEGAL AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS, and CHEAT by using ILLEGAL HOME-MADE PEST CONTROL CONCOCTIONS, and CHEAT by IMPORTING products from outside jurisdictions.
It must be noted that NOT ONE RESIDENT HAS EVER BEEN CHARGED FOR VIOLATING PROHIBITION.
Professional Lawn Care businesses simply CANNOT COMPETE with this segment of the market, and this CIRCUMVENTION OF PROHIBITION has led to the DESTRUCTION of the Professional Lawn Care Industry.

ANTI-PESTICIDE PROHIBITION IS A DISMAL FAILURE

The pesticide legislation in Ontario is, of course, provincial, and you should have no problem bringing the product across the border.
Literally thousands of gardeners are doing this currently and the federally-employed border people generally have no concern about provincial legislation.
The products are all tested and approved by Health Canada for the purposes stated on the labels.
Mr. Drysdale is the nation’s best-known celebrity horticulturist, plant expert, writer, speaker, radio and television broadcaster.
Mr. Drysdale is best known for his syndicated radio show and commercials for the Garden Claw.
Residents living in PROHIBITION jurisdictions are obtaining pest control products either from other provinces, or mostly from across the border in the United States.
The highest sales of pesticides in the United States among residents are in Detroit, Port Huron, Michigan, Buffalo, and Niagara Falls ( New York ).
It is NOT illegal to own or possess these products, only to apply them professionally.
However, in City of Richmond, British Columbia, residents ARE FINED for using conventional pest control products on their properties.
City of Richmond has its own personal army of ANTI-PESTICIDE SOLDIERS ( a.k.a. By-Law Officers ) who DEMONSTRATE THE ABUSE OF GOVERNMENT POWER.
Richmond CONDUCTS BLITZKRIEGS THAT TERRORIZE Professional Lawn Care Companies and even residents.
Nonetheless, in Eastern Canada, no jurisdiction has EVER enforced PROHIBITION by going after residents.

Because of PROHIBITION, residents are forced to improvise ways of obtaining pest control products that are already being used in our own communities … for road-side weed control, golf course maintenance, and agricultural production.
In Ontario, there is NO law that will be enforced against residents using pesticides … enforcement only is only applied to the sale and commercial use.
In fact, residents don’t even have to drive across the border … they can buy these products over the Internet.
Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION has been leading many residents to simply ORDER BANNED PRODUCTS FROM ELSEWHERE IN CANADA and have them delivered by courier.
The simplicity of the Internet has allowed this practice to go unchecked.

The following is using the numbers from the OTRF’s 2008 Economic Profile of the Ontario Turfgrass Industry.
In Ontario if we see only two thirds of the losses experienced in HALIFAX ( A 25 PER CENT REDUCTION ) gross revenue loss would be around 315 MILLION DOLLARS, operational and wages would drop over 144 million dollars and the NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES WOULD BE REDUCED BY AT LEAST 5,250.
Based on the current trends caused by the uncertainty surrounding C-64 and the banning of the of the industries’ domestic market for goods and services the reduction will exceed 80 per cent.
This translates into 1-BILLION-DOLLAR IN LOSS REVENUE to the industry which will translate into A REDUCTION OF 461 MILLION DOLLARS NOT SPENT ON OPERATIONS AND EQUIPMENT due to the LOSS OF 16,800 JOBS.

In 1889, in Medford, Massachusetts, the Gypsy Moth population exploded.
These caterpillars were so numerous that virtually all the vulnerable trees were completely stripped of their leaves.
Fences, houses, sidewalks, tree trunks, and yards were covered with caterpillars and their frass ( i.e. excrement ).
In 1889, the Massachusetts State Board of Agriculture began a ten–year campaign to eradicate the Gypsy Moth.
This campaign included ―

They also use REPEATED APPLICATIONS and HIGH RATES than what is LEGALLY RECOMMENDED on the Fiesta label.
By the year 2011, in jurisdictions like Ontario, the EXORBITANT REPEAT APPLICATIONS AND STUNNINGLY HIGH COST of Fiesta prompted businesses to CONCOCT their own iron-based mixtures through the ILLEGAL USE of LOW-COST AGRICULTURAL IRON EQUIVALENTS in the form of FERTILIZER.
HIGH RATES of Fiesta, or its agricultural iron equivalents, EVEN BURNED TURF.
On March 12th, 2012, the Government of Canada warned the Professional Lawn Care Industry that any person found using/promoting an unregistered iron fertilizer for weed control will be subject to compliance and enforcement measures.
According to a Government Official at Health Canada in a letter to LandsCAPE Ontario Trade Association …
It has recently come to our attention that a number of LANDSCAPE ONTARIO MEMBERS are promoting the use of UNREGISTERED IRON-BASED FERTILIZERS for the selective control of broadleaf weeds in turf.
At the present time, there are ONLY TWO COMMERCIAL IRON-BASED PRODUCTS REGISTERED under the Pest Control Products Act ( PCPA ) for the selective control of broadleaf weeds in turf, including Fiesta Lawn Weed Killer Ready To Spray ( PCP No. 29534 ) and Fiesta Lawn Weed Killer ( PCP No. 29535 ).
The use of unregistered pest control products in Canada is prohibited as per Section 6 (1) of the PCPA; « No person shall manufacture, store, transport, import, distribute or use a pest control product that is not registered under this Act … ».
Accordingly, any person found using/promoting an unregistered iron fertilizer for weed control will be SUBJECT TO COMPLIANCE AND ENFORCEMENT MEASURES, as set forth by the authority of the PCPA and Regulations.

I would be most interested in obtaining any ideas or suggestions you may have to help effect compliance with our Federal Legislation.

Violating federal law also resulted in a VEILED THREAT from the manufacturer of Fiesta Herbicide, Neudorff.
According to the Neudorff Media Release on April 4th, 2012 ―
Fiesta is the ONLY registered chelated iron pesticide product trade-marked and registered for legal use.
There’s a growing trend towards KNOCK-OFF PRODUCTS, these are not only ILLEGAL but also contain a lower quality chelated iron.

Broad-leaved weeds were a problem in many lawns in 1927.
Invasive weed species included ─ Chickweed, Creeping Charlie, and Pennywort.
Just like today, there were NO valid products to control pests such as weeds.
And just like today, AGRICULTURAL FERTILIZERS were used as PEST CONTROL CONCOCTIONS.
The FERTILIZER known as AMMONIUM SULFATE was uses as a so-called WEED DESTROYER.
It was applied dry in its powdered form directly onto weed patches, and water was sprinkled very lightly to just dissolve the fertilizer without washing it off the leaves.
The effect on the weeds was that it BURNED THEM BADLY, and while it did not kill them, it did discourage their growth.
This situation was no different in the early 1900s than the current-day usage of yet another fertilizer-weed-control product … FIESTA HERBICIDE ( A.K.A. WEED-B-GON ).

Broad-leaved weeds were also a problem in golf course putting greens in 1927.
Just like today, there were NO valid products to control WEEDS on golf course putting greens.
And just like today, HIGHLY DANGEROUS CHEMICALS and AGRICULTURAL FERTILIZERS were used in PEST CONTROL CONCOCTIONS.
On putting greens, the best method of controlling Dandelions in 1927 was to impregnate the crown of the plant with SULFURIC ACID.
This was done with an ice pick where the point was dipped in acid, and stuck into the crown.
For Common Chickweed, the practice was once again to burn it with FERTILIZERS like AMMONIUM SULFATE or AMMONIUM PHOSPHATE.
Weeds were exceptionally difficult to control because weed-infested manure was often used as a source of fertilizer.
Manure was used for both construction or maintenance of putting greens.

Broad-leaved weeds were a problem in golf course rough ( a.k.a. long grass ) in 1927.
Just like today, there were NO valid products to control pests such as weeds.
And just like today, HIGHLY DANGEROUS CHEMICALS were used as PEST CONTROL CONCOCTIONS.
In 1927, Poison Ivy was considered the most common, and understandably the most undesirable weed, in any part of the golf course.
It was not an easy plant to destroy.
Early season defoliation was performed with a spray solution of 3½ pounds of COMMON SALT in one gallon of slightly soapy water.
Late season defoliation required a spray solution of CRANKCASE OIL DILUTED WITH KEROSENE.
The physical removal of small isolated clumps of Poison Ivy was considered effective, as long as workers were properly protected, or were allegedly PRACTICALLY IMMUNE TO IVY POISONING.
Physical removal was also recommended for another weed, Japanese Honeysuckle.
However, chemical control was reportedly achieved by spraying the honeysuckle with 25 per cent emulsions of CRANKCASE OIL, HEAVY FUEL OIL, or LIGHT LUBRICATING OIL.
These PEST CONTROL CONCOCTIONS are DANGEROUS AND ENVIRONMENTALLY HAZARDOUS !
In open areas, the oil-soaked plants and soil were BURNED after the leaves died.

In The Late 1800s, People Were Burning Forests Against Insects
NO BETTER OFF TODAY THAN IN THE LATE 1800s
In 1889, in Medford, Massachusetts, the Gypsy Moth population exploded, and the caterpillar stage of this insect fed upon millions of deciduous trees, and stripped them of their leaves.
These caterpillars were so numerous that virtually all the vulnerable trees were completely stripped of their leaves.
Fences, houses, sidewalks, tree trunks, and yards were covered with caterpillars and their frass ( i.e. excrement ).
Frantic to control the outbreak, residents even BURNED THE CATERPILLARS OFF THE TREES WITH KEROSENE.
In 1889, the Massachusetts State Board of Agriculture began a ten–year campaign to eradicate the Gypsy Moth.
This campaign included ―
• THE BURNING OF INFESTED FORESTS,
• the manual removal ( a.k.a. hand-picking ) of egg masses, and
• the application of primitive insecticides.
By 1900, the ten-year plan of attack was ALMOST successful in eradicating the Gypsy Moth.
