Speaking Out Against Anti-Pesticide Terrorism
Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION has made it IMPOSSIBLE TO NURSE DAMAGED NATURAL GRASS SPORTS FIELDS BACK TO HEALTH.
It’s worth pointing out that every pesticide PROHIBITED by the Ontario Provincial Government was previously approved by scientists at the Federal Government’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency.
With NO WAY TO SAVE NATURAL GRASS SPORTS FIELDS THAT BECOME INFESTED WITH WEEDS, the sensible solution has been to SWITCH TO PLASTIC TURF.
NATURAL GRASS SPORTS FIELDS are on the PATH TO EXTINCTION.
ARTIFICIAL/SYNTHETIC GRASS costs more to install, but delivers substantially more playing time.
The risk of picking up a STAPH INFECTION while playing on ARTIFICIAL/SYNTHETIC GRASS is quite REMOTE … about as REMOTE, in fact, as the risk posed by REGULATED PESTICIDES when properly and responsibly used.
Nonetheless, observers expect many more fields to go FROM REAL GRASS TO FAKE in the years to come.

Dalton McGuinty Killed My Shrub.
OK, so maybe the premier didn’t have a direct hand in the death of the euonymus bush on my front yard.
An infestation of dreaded EUONYMUS SCALE took care of that.
But Dalton McGuinty did PREVENT ME FROM TAKING ACTION to save that shrub, which I had lovingly trimmed over the years into something resembling a piano.
His was a crime of omission.
According to my local nursery expert ( who spoke on condition of anonymity ), SEVERAL FEDERALLY APPROVED REMEDIES COULD HAVE SAVED MY SHRUB.
But while folks elsewhere can make use of them, not me — thanks to McGuinty’s 2009 PROHIBITION against cosmetic pesticides.
IT’S WORTH POINTING OUT THAT EVERY PESTICIDE PROHIBITED BY THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT WAS PREVIOUSLY APPROVED BY SCIENTISTS AT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S PEST MANAGEMENT REGULATORY AGENCY.
The PROHIBITION was motivated by the « precautionary principle » that stirs up fear of minuscule or unknown risks in the absence of scientific evidence.
PRECAUTIONARY PRINCIPLE – INVALIDATED WEAPON OF COERCION ( Web-Page )
In defending his PROHIBITION, McGuinty frequently mentioned the need to PROTECT CHILDREN from such risks.
But what of the unintended consequences ?
Judging from the shape of every other euonymus bush in my neighbourhood, the shrub may be on its way to complete extinction.
EUONYMUS SCALE has arrived and there’s now no way to cure it.
( As an aside, the nursery recommended I burn the infected bush to stop the infestation from spreading, but of course I’m not allowed to do that either. )
Unfortunately, euonymus bushes are probably NOT THE ONLY THING LIKELY TO DISAPPEAR in the wake of McGuinty’s Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION.
What else is on the PATH TO EXTINCTION ?
How about NATURAL GRASS SPORTS FIELDS.
As little as a decade ago, you could count the number of ARTIFICIAL/SYNTHETIC SPORTS FIELDS owned by Ontario municipalities or school boards on one hand.
This year, according to industry sources, there will be OVER 100 in operation.
Such a phenomenon is highly visible in our region.
In 2011, Waterloo replaced NATURAL GRASS SOCCER PITCHES at RIM Park with ARTIFICIAL/SYNTHETIC FIELDS.
The University of Guelph recently installed an ARTIFICIAL/SYNTHETIC FOOTBALL FIELD on campus.
And in spring 2012 at Woodside Park, Kitchener unveiled the first two in a series of planned soccer field conversions.

WE CAN EXPECT MANY MORE FIELDS TO GO FROM REAL GRASS TO FAKE IN THE YEARS TO COME.
There are lots of good economic reasons to favour ARTIFICIAL/SYNTHETIC GRASS over the real thing.
As Greg Hummel, Manager of Park Planning, Development and Operations at City of Kitchener explains a NATURAL GRASS FIELD tops out at about 450 HOURS OF SPORTS ACTIVITIES PER YEAR.
« After that, you are basically destroying the turf » he says.
On the other hand, SYNTHETIC GRASS can be programmed for as many as 3,000 HOURS PER YEAR ― with a big benefit coming from use during the shoulder seasons of spring and fall, when grass must be left dormant.
Crunching the numbers, SYNTHETIC GRASS COSTS MORE TO INSTALL, BUT DELIVERS SUBSTANTIALLY MORE PLAYING TIME.
But what explains the recent swing to artificial ?
One reason that cannot be overlooked is that Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION has made it IMPOSSIBLE TO NURSE DAMAGED NATURAL GRASS FIELDS BACK TO HEALTH.
According to Greg Hummel at City of Kitchener ―
Being able to spray a field was an easy and affordable quick step.
With NO WAY TO SAVE FIELDS THAT BECOME INFESTED WITH WEEDS, the sensible solution has been to SWITCH TO PLASTIC TURF.
And yet we shouldn’t necessarily celebrate the disappearance of grass sports fields as part of the inevitable march of progress.
As Hummel acknowledges, almost everyone PREFERS TO PLAY ON THE REAL THING.
Furthermore, NATURAL GRASS offers some IMPORTANT BENEFITS that have been overlooked in the rush to ersatz grass.
REAL TURF is unsurpassed at COLLECTING AND FILTERING RAIN WATER.
It also acts as A NATURAL DIGESTER, consuming any nasty BACTERIA that may be spat, bled or vomited on it.
BACTERIA on ARTIFICIAL FIELDS stay there until washed away.
The presence of BACTERIA has become a major issue in Texas, which boasts a large number of ARTIFICIAL/SYNTHETIC FOOTBALL FIELDS due to its hot, dry climate.
In 2007, for example, Austin, Texas, high school footballer Boone Baker caught the feared methicillin-resistant STAPH INFECTION, Staphylococuccus aureus, after scrapping his knee on his school’s ARTIFICIAL/SYNTHETIC TURF and was left temporarily paralyzed.
For this reason, all ARTIFICIAL/SYNTHETIC FIELDS now need to be regularly sprayed with a POWERFUL DISINFECTANT.
It’s certainly not my intention to create panic about ARTIFICIAL FIELDS.
The risk of picking up a STAPH INFECTION while playing on ARTIFICIAL/SYNTHETIC GRASS is quite REMOTE …
… about as REMOTE, in fact, as the risk posed by REGULATED PESTICIDES when properly and responsibly used.
Rather, the point to make here is entirely ironic.
Environmentalists who tirelessly advocated for Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION in order to create a more « natural » environment have instead ushered in a world filled with ARTIFICIAL/SYNTHETIC GRASS THAT MUST BE CLEANED WITH INDUSTRIAL-STRENGTH CLEANSERS.
And in attempting to protect kids from minuscule risks posed by regulated pesticides, we have as a consequence exposed them to different and equally minuscule risks.
Oh, and how do you throw out a football field-sized piece of carpet ?
Perhaps the environmental movement should be looking for ways to preserve REAL GRASS FIELDS instead of replacing them all with PLASTIC.
PESTICIDES DO HAVE A USE.

The McGuinty-Ontario-Anti-Pesticide-Regime
The Province of Ontario is currently under a Liberal government headed by Premier Dalton James Patrick McGuinty Junior.
McGuinty Junior is the ENVIRO-LUNATIC MASTER-BASTERD PREMIER of the Province of Ontario.
The present McGuinty Government, first elected in 2003, was re-elected on October 10th, 2007.
On October 6th, 2011, Dalton McGuinty led a successful campaign for his third term re-election, but this time with a MINORITY government.
McGuinty LOST his majority because of DISSATISFACTION with his environmental policies, especially wind turbines.
The McGuinty Government is affectionately called the McGUINTY-ONTARIO-ANTI-PESTICIDE-REGIME.
This regime is the POLITICAL SHIELD for Anti-Pesticide and Enviro-Lunatic Terrorists like David Suzuki Foundation and Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment.
The actions of the McGuinty Government are viewed as a form of TERROR against Ontario society, and specifically against the Professional Lawn Care Industry.
On April 22nd, 2009 ― a date which will live in the period of ENVIRONMENTAL INFAMY ― the full force of the Ontario Cosmetic Pesticides Ban Act came into effect, and DESTROYED the Professional Lawn Care Industry.
The DEVASTATION of the Professional Lawn Care Industry was EXTENSIVE because there were NO valid economical alternatives to replace the prohibited products.
VIRTUALLY ALL Green Alternative Pesticides were almost TOTALLY INEFFECTIVE, except under very specific circumstances.
The Green Alternative Pesticides were BOGUS and DISMAL FAILURES.
Consequently, Professional Lawn Care Companies were UNABLE to provide adequate weed and insect control, and were UNABLE to keep their customers satisfied.

Precautionary Principle INVALIDATED
The Precautionary Principle was intended for use where science DOES NOT EXIST.
Such is NOT the case with pest control products ― Health Canada requires each new pest control product to go through a COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT of over TWO-HUNDRED SEPARATE TESTS and a REVIEW of all scientifically credible studies that exist to ensure that the product will NOT CAUSE HARM TO PEOPLE, ANIMALS OR THE ENVIRONMENT.
Nonetheless, the Precautionary Principle is CO-OPTED by Anti-Pesticide Activists to justify their position where SCIENCE-BASED ASSESSMENT does not support their JUNK-SCIENCE PHILOSOPHY.
Anti-Pesticide Activists have MIS-USED the Precautionary Principle TO SERVE THEIR AMBITIONS for convincing governments to enact Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION.
The Precautionary Principle is essentially VACUOUS, since « full scientific certainty » is IMPOSSIBLE.
With the Precautionary Principle, activists DO NOT HAVE TO PRESENT ANY EVIDENCE … they just have to say « harmful to the environment ».
The ABSOLUTIST INTERPRETATION of the Precautionary Principle is used by activists TO JUSTIFY ANY KIND OF REGULATORY INTERVENTION OR BAN.
Pest control products used in the Urban Landscape DO NOT qualify for consideration under the Precautionary Principle.
It is IMPOSSIBLE to prove scientifically that pest control products ― or any substance, including water ― could NEVER harm anything or anyone under ANY circumstances.
Pest control products used in the Urban Landscape are NOT SERIOUS, they are SELECTIVE to pests, have LOW TOXICITY to non-target organisms, and are WELL UNDERSTOOD.
Their use is NOT widespread ― it is less than 2 per cent of all active ingredients used in Canada.
The effects of these pest control products are NOT IRREVERSIBLE.

Precautionary Principle ― The Wisdom of Solomon
The CO-OPTED ANTI-PESTICIDE VERSION of the Precautionary Principle has been INVALIDATED by TRUE EXPERTS like Professor Keith R. Solomon.
Professor Keith R. Solomon is an INTERNATIONALLY-RESPECTED TOXICOLOGIST.
Professor Solomon has received awards for his work in North America, South America, Europe, and at the United Nations.
He teaches toxicology at both the under-graduate and graduate level at the University of Guelph.
Professor Solomon has authored or co-authored hundreds of research articles and books.
Professor Solomon serves on several advisory committees on matters related to environmental toxicology and risk assessment of pest control products and other substances in Canada, the U.S.A., Europe, and for the United Nations Environmental Program.
He is also the chair of the board of directors for the Canadian Network of Toxicology Centres.
According to Professor Keith R. Solomon, Question and Answers about Landscape and Garden Pest Control Products, March 27th, 2007 ―
Landscape and garden use of pest control products DOES NOT qualify for consideration under the Precautionary Principle.
They are NOT SERIOUS, they are SELECTIVE to pests, have LOW TOXICITY to non-target organisms, and are WELL UNDERSTOOD.
Their use is NOT widespread, less than 2 per cent of all active pesticide ingredients used in Canada are for landscape uses and the land area to which they are applied is small.
The effects of these pest control products are NOT IRREVERSIBLE.
There is RAPID RECOVERY through re-invasion and weed seeds and most need to be used at least once per season.

More Speaking Out Against Anti-Pesticide Terrorism
As a result of Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION, weeds, primarily DANDELIONS, have become the DOMINANT GROUND COVER for lawns, parks, school yards, and sports fields across the Province of Ontario.
Heaven help the politician who gets the blame for all of the ugly lawns.
PROHIBITION dictates aesthetics to the public.
PROHIBITION imposed under the PRETEXT of protecting CHILDREN’s health is actually harmful to CHILDREN.
PROHIBITION ignores the federal regulatory system.
PROHIBITION was entirely political.
There is NO reliable scientific evidence indicating that regulated pest control products pose any threat to human health when used correctly.

DANDELIONS HAVE BECOME THE DOMINANT GROUND COVER for lawns, parks, school yards and sports fields
Provincial politicians often promise that their province won’t look the same once they’re done.
Usually, they’re talking about taxes, jobs, education, or the laws of the land.
While these are all important issues, they frankly don’t have much physical presence in everyday life.
Your street generally looks the same regardless of who’s in power.
Not so in Ontario.
Since 2009, PREMIER DALTON MCGUINTY HAS MANAGED TO ALTER THE PHYSICAL APPEARANCE OF HIS PROVINCE.
EVERY FRONT YARD IS NOW UGLIER.
By 2010, it was a year and a month since the McGuinty government introduced legislation PROHIBITING the use of pesticides everywhere except golf courses and farms.
As a result WEEDS, PRIMARILY DANDELIONS, HAVE BECOME THE DOMINANT GROUND COVER for lawns, parks, school yards, and sports fields across the province.
It took a while for the FULL IMPACT of PROHIBITION to become apparent.
Last year, many lawns seemed to retain vestigial protection against weeds due to previous pesticide treatments.
Now, however, THE WEEDS ARE HERE TO STAY.
FOREVER.
Residential streetscapes have switched from green to yellow.
To white and fluffy.
And back to yellow again.
IT’S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THIS EFFORT WAS ENTIRELY POLITICAL.
THERE IS NO RELIABLE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE THAT REGULATED PESTICIDES, WHEN USED CORRECTLY, POSE ANY THREAT TO HUMAN HEALTH.
Ignoring the work of the federal government’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency, McGuinty blithely declared a sweeping PROHIBITION was necessary for « our children’s’ health ».
NO OTHER jurisdiction in North America went so far in forbidding chemical weed control.
Yet a weed-free lush grass lawn or field has MANY PRACTICAL BENEFITS.
For one, grass acts as a NATURAL CUSHION.
It is also an EFFECTIVE SPONGE for rain water.
A sports field entirely OVER-RUN BY DANDELIONS provides NONE of these benefits.

When it rains, [ the sports field ] becomes a SLIPPERY MUD BOG.
In hot months ― [ the sports field becomes ] a concrete-like surface.
Not only does this make it difficult to play sports, but it’s DANGEROUS as well.
Falling on hard-baked playground mud is, speaking from parental experience, the DIRECT CAUSE OF NUMEROUS SKINNED KNEES AND TWISTED ANKLES.
McGuinty’s crusade on behalf of children’s health is ACTUALLY HURTING KIDS ON A DAILY BASIS.
PEST CONTROL PRODUCTS – CHILDREN ARE NOT AT RISK ( Web-Page )
It’s also the case that many, most likely a majority, of people consider a uniform green lawn to be a thing of beauty and an object of desire.
From this perspective, PROHIBITION represents an effort to DICTATE AESTHETICS.
Various propaganda claims there’s nothing wrong with a weedy, yellow-dotted lawn ― everyone should simply learn to appreciate the wondrous joys of dandelions.
Or put in a rock garden.
But that’s a matter of opinion.
ON WHAT BASIS SHOULD THE STATE GIVE ITSELF A MANDATE OVER BEAUTY ?
Of course, even the McGuinty government seems to recognize these efforts haven’t really convinced home-owners TO LOVE UGLY LAWNS.
A provincial web-site also offers tips for a weed-free yard without pesticides ―
« PLUCK WEEDS BY HAND » it cheerily declares.
« Get a weeding tool and the job will be faster and easier. »
With more practical options outlawed, this advice appears to have stuck.
In my neighbourhood, it seems every second home-owner is now outside on Saturday afternoons diligently PLUCKING AND PULLING AT AN ENDLESS SUPPLY OF WEEDS.
NO ONE looks very happy; probably because it’s an entirely SISYPHEAN TASK.
[ The word SISYPHEAN means endless and unavailing as labour or a task. ]
GREEN ALTERNATIVE – MANUAL WEED PICKING NIGGAR WORK ( Web-Page )
Curiously, McGuinty has ANOTHER major preoccupation besides PROHIBITING THINGS AND FRETTING ABOUT CHILDREN.
In early 2010, his government released a substantial report on the long-term prospects for the economy.
Chief among its issues was a commitment to improving productivity.
« Encouraging faster productivity growth » was presented as a crucial step to defending the provincial standard of living.
And yet it is difficult to imagine anything more UNPRODUCTIVE than forcing every home-owner in the province to ABANDON A PERFECTLY SAFE, MODERN, AND EFFICIENT MEANS OF WEED CONTROL in favour of a method that can only be described as MEDIEVAL.
PROHIBITION thus represents an ENORMOUS DEADWEIGHT LOSS for the province.
Even if we assume time spent hand-weeding on weekends would otherwise be allocated to yard maintenance, the provincial net worth could be vastly enhanced if everyone was spending those hours painting fences, repairing decks and trimming hedges.
For ELDERLY RESIDENTS, many of whom take great pride in their gardens and yards, hand pulling may not only be unproductive, but PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE.
Denied the use of better, labour-saving methods of weed control, many retirees have simply lost the ability to tend to their own yard.
All of which suggests we haven’t heard the last on this issue.
And Heaven help the politician who ends up taking the blame for everyone’s UGLY LAWN.

Terror NEVER Ends In Ontario
Because of Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION, Ontario now has a MORE DANGEROUS OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENT, a BLACK MARKET IN PESTICIDES, and a TRAIL OF ECONOMIC DESTRUCTION WITH HUNDREDS OF SMALL BUSINESSES DESTROYED and THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE OUT OF WORK.
The Ontario PESTICIDE BAN has TAKEN AWAY THE ABILITY of people to SAFEGUARD THEMSELVES AGAINST NOXIOUS WEEDS AND DISEASE-CARRYING INSECTS.
On May 31st, 2012, Bill 88 was introduced to AMEND THE BAN ON PESTICIDES, and ALLOW LICENSED PROFESSIONALS TO APPLY THESE PRODUCTS under strict conditions and in concentrations well within established safety limits.
Bill 88 had the added effect of STRENGTHENING the Professional Lawn Care Industry that has been DEVASTATED by the McGuinty Liberals’ ARBITRARY PESTICIDE BAN.
There are LEGITIMATE CONCERNS about NOXIOUS WEEDS, which in extreme cases can contribute to DEATH, and which FORCE MILLIONS TO MEDICATE THEMSELVES or LIVE WITH SEVERE ALLERGIC EFFECTS.
Surely the entirely UNPROVEN CONCERNS of a few POLITICALLY-CONNECTED FEAR-MONGERERS should be balanced against the STRICTLY-TESTED, LENGTHY AND SCIENTIFICALLY-DOCUMENTED USE OF PESTICIDES applied under controlled conditions to deal with human health problems caused by noxious plants and disease-carrying insects.
PESTICIDE BANS result in CATASTROPHIC CARNAGE caused by BAN FAILURES, BUSINESS FAILURES, GARBAGE DUMP GREEN SPACES, STUNNINGLY EXORBITANT COSTS, HORRIFIC FINES, and even ILLNESS and DEATH.
PESTICIDE BANS have created a TRAIL OF ECONOMIC DESTRUCTION with THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE OUT OF WORK.

GET RID OF THE ONTARIO PESTICIDE BAN !
Everyone in the Green Space Industry ― no matter where they live ― must meet with their Member of Provincial Parliament ( MPP ), regardless of party affiliation.
In order to meet and inform the MPP, you must donate the maximum amount to the party, which is 1,240 dollars in Ontario.
The cost of this donation is insignificant when compared to the catastrophic business losses inflicted by anti-pesticide prohibition.
Any business owner in the Green Space Industry who does not bother to meet with the local MPP is a pitiful fool and an idiot, and does not deserve a career, or a business, or any success.
