Allegations Of Bee Mortality
Any PROHIBITION of pest control products is NOT NECESSARY.
Between April and June 2012, Health Canada received A SMALL NUMBER of reports of bee losses from across southern Ontario, involving a MERE 40 Bee-Keepers, as well as 1 report from Quebec.
At present there are 2,900 Bee-Keepers in Ontario, therefore, THE AFFECTED BEE-KEEPERS REPRESENT LESS THAN 1.5 PER CENT OF ALL BEE-KEEPERS IN ONTARIO.
The information evaluated to date suggests that insecticides used on TREATED CORN SEEDS contributed to many of the bee losses.
Health Canada has issued a document entitled Reducing Risk From Treated Seeds which recommends BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES for corn growers.
This document is archived at the end of this segment.
This Health Canada document outlined MEASURES TO REDUCE RISK TO POLLINATORS from exposure to DUST generated during planting of insecticide treated seed.
The focus of this document was specifically on ONE GROUP OF INSECTICIDES CALLED NITRO-GUANIDINE, AND NOT ALL INSECTICIDES.
The BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES are considered to be a toolbox of options to HELP REDUCE RISK TO POLLINATORS, recognizing that not all practices may be possible under all circumstances.
The Pesticide Industry has been COMMITTED to actively promote these BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES within the agricultural community and to play a leadership role in expanding communication channels among Pesticide Applicators, Growers, and Bee-Keepers.
The purpose of enhanced communications is to raise awareness of all relevant parties in a given area of treated seed planting, so that timely and meaningful collaboration can occur.
Additionally, in 2013, Health Canada will assess how well the best management practices are working.
This will include responding to any reported bee mortality incidents that are suspected to be related to planting of treated seed.
Overall, there is NO EVIDENCE TO SUGGEST A LINK between Neonicotinoid Insecticides and bee deaths, or Bee Colony Collapse Disorder.
Neonicotinoid Insecticides DO NOT HARM BEES. It is far more likely that Bee-Keepers are HARMING BEES, and NOT Neonicotinoid Insecticides.
Neonicotinoid Insecticides, like Imidacloprid, are widely used for the control of insect pests in lawns, gardens, ornamental plants, and agriculture.
Since 2006, Anti-Pesticide Activists and Bee-Keepers have ALLEGED that there are so-called links and causes between the Neonicotinoid Insecticides like Imidacloprid and Bee Colony Collapse Disorder.
Researchers have NOT been able to identify a single cause of Bee Colony Collapse Disorder.
The weight of the scientific evidence clearly shows that Neonicotinoid Insecticides DO NOT AFFECT BEES.
The exposure of bees to Neonicotinoid Insecticides is at very low levels, far too low to cause harmful effects.
Neonicotinoid Insecticides WILL CAUSE NO HARM TO BEES since treated plant tissues contain only tiny amounts of ingredient, bees are not feeding on the plants, and pollen contains barely detectable levels.
If some Anti-Pesticide Activists and Bee-Keepers were not so SCIENTIFICALLY ILLITERATE, they would know that scientific research shows that, as reported through EPA’s and Health Canada’s VAST TOXICOLOGY DATABASE, NO HARM WILL OCCUR TO BEES.
Bee Colony Collapse Disorder is THE FAULT OF BEE-KEEPERS and their mismanagement practices. Bee-Keepers are responsible, and NOT Neonicotinoid Insecticides.
In their usual method of arriving at SCIENTIFICALLY ILLITERATE CONCLUSIONS, the Anti-Pesticide Activists and Bee-Keepers have somehow CONCOCTED THE IMAGINARY DANGER that Neonicotinoid Insecticides was the reason for Bee Colony Collapse Disorder EVERYWHERE.
Of course, this is a MYTH !
Anti-Pesticide Activists and Bee-Keepers are THE LEAST QUALIFIED TO PROVIDE ANY ADVICE concerning Neonicotinoid Insecticides.
Anti-Pesticide Activists and Bee-Keepers ALLEGE, with NO SCIENTIFIC PROOF, that Neonicotinoid Insecticides somehow cause Bee Colony Collapse Disorder EVERYWHERE.
This is a MYTH !
When used properly, with BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES, Neonicotinoid Insecticides CAUSE NO HARM, and DO NOT HURT BEES.

The LOSS OF BEES IS, MOST LIKELY, THE FAULT OF BEE-KEEPERS and their mismanagement practices.
Bee-Keepers are responsible, and NOT pesticides.

Insecticides Threaten Useful Organisms ( ?!?! )
Insecticides are necessary to control serious pests of turf, such as White Grubs.
Anti-Pesticide Activists argue that the use of such products threatens useful organisms, such the birds and the bees.
The following is an example of a comment made about the Golf Industry in British Columbia ( B.C. ) ―
At least one of those B.C. cases of Bee Colony Collapse Disorder is here on Vancouver Island, where new golf courses spring up by the month, it seems. They are all heavy users of imidacloprid and other insect[icides] and herbicides [ … ] it is no wonder Vancouver Island’s bee, butterfly, native frog and turtle populations are being decimated.
This is WRONG !

Pesticides Hurting Bees Is A MYTH
Bee Health Is Crucial
According to Lorne Hepworth, President of CropLife Canada, on April 24th, 2012 …
Pollinator health is a pivotal part of agriculture and Canada's plant science industry, which has a natural interest in working to preserve the health of pollinators, takes the issue very seriously.
Renowned Canadian researchers concur that the stressors causing colony losses are many, varied and probably interrelated.
Research shows pollinators face significant stress from multiple factors including parasites, diseases, lack of genetic diversity and impacts such as the transport of managed colonies.
Thus pollinator health must be viewed from a broad perspective. Otherwise efforts to promote bee health will be in vain.
Both the study from Harvard School of Public Health and those published in Science magazine did not account for real-world factors that affect bee and colony health.
Neither study bothered to address the disparity between their results and those of earlier studies that demonstrated no adverse effects at field-relevant concentrations.
The plant science industry supports further research involving pollinator health.
However, the weight of evidence from other studies that show NO ASSOCIATION between properly used pesticides, and overall bee health must also be considered.
In-depth research into pesticides is conducted from a very early stage to minimize any harmful impact on beneficial insects like bees.
Pollinators are further protected through Canada's rigorous pesticide regulatory system, which includes the review of a comprehensive set of more than 200 studies before a pesticide is allowed on the market.
Contrary to what [ may be assumed ], both organic and conventionally grown foods use pesticides approved through Health Canada.

Summary of Theoretical Causes Of Bee Colony Collapse Disorder ( BCCD )
Since 2006, Bee Colony Collapse Disorder ( BCCD ) is a phenomenon in which commercial honeybees abruptly disappear, which is worrisome because many agricultural crops are pollinated by bees.
Anti-Pesticide Activists have concocted all sorts of « causes » for this phenomenon, hoping to collect PROFITS from CASH DONATIONS, ILLICIT BUSINESSES, UNQUALIFIED EMPLOYMENT, and GRANTS, quite often WITHOUT PAYING A SINGLE PENNY IN TAXES.
Pest control products PLAY A NEGLIGIBLE ROLE compared to diseases, viruses and loss of habitat.

Theoretical Cause Of BCCD ― Climate Change
Big Surprise !
Enviro-Lunatic Activists believe so-called Global Warming is a « cause » of Bee Colony Collapse Disorder ( BCCD ).
This is an Enviro-Lunatic MYTH !
However, there is no doubt that normal weather extremes are a significant cause.
For example, approximately ten per cent of bee colonies are annihilated during the winter, especially when food reserves are low and bees are confined to the hive.

Winter ― The True Cause Of Bee Colony Collapse Disorder
In 2010, America’s dwindling honeybee population has been badly hit by the BITTER WINTER, the harshest in decades, with experts warning that WINTER LOSSES could be as high as 50 per cent.
Beekeepers normally lose around 10 per cent of their colonies DURING THE WINTER-TIME, when food stores are low and bees are confined to the hive.
But preliminary estimates indicated that in 2010, LOSSES were estimated between 30 to 50 per cent, said David Mendes, President of the American Beekeeping Federation.
The DECLINE in the global honeybee population, which was first observed in the United States in 2006, has showed no signs of abating, in a phenomenon that has baffled researchers and beekeepers.
Data from the Department of Agriculture show an ANNUAL DROP of 29 per cent drop in bee colonies, compared with 36 per cent decline in 2008 and 32 per cent in 2007.

Theoretical Cause ― Genetically Modified Crops
Anti-Pesticide Activists have created the story that the pollen of genetically modified crops is toxic to bees.
This is also an Enviro-Lunatic MYTH !
――――――――――――――――――――
Pesticides Hurting Bees Is A MYTH
Theoretical Cause Of BCCD ― Beekeeping Practices
The beekeepers themselves may actually be the principal cause of Bee Colony Collapse Disorder.
Commercial Honey Bee mis-management is likely a contributing factor that requires closer review.
A similar situation occurred in the 1990s in Eastern Canada, when Maple Syrup Producers blamed so-called Acid Rain for the decline of their mis-managed trees.
――――――――――――――――――――
Pesticides Hurting Bees Is A MYTH
Theoretical Cause Of BCCD ― Lack Of Genetic Biodiversity
Nearly all Queen Bees, and subsequently all honeybees, descend from one of several hundred Breeder Queens.
This limited genetic pool may degrade the quality of Queen Bees used to start new hives, and result in honeybees that are significantly more susceptible to pests.
――――――――――――――――――――
Pesticides Hurting Bees Is A MYTH
Theoretical Cause Of BCCD ― Malnutrition
Wild honeybees forage on the diversity of flowers in their habitat, enjoying a variety of pollen and nectar sources.
By comparison, commercial honeybees are limited to foraging specific crops, such as blueberries, or cherries.
Honeybees fed on single crops, or limited varieties of plants, may suffer nutritional deficiencies that create stress on their immune systems.
――――――――――――――――――――
Pesticides Hurting Bees Is A MYTH
Theoretical Cause Of BCCD ― Migratory Beekeeping
Commercial beekeepers rent their hives to farmers, earning more from pollination services than they could ever make from honey production alone.
Hives are stacked on the back of tractor-trailers, covered, and driven thousands of miles.
For honeybees, orientation to their hive is vital to life, and being relocated creates stress.
Additionally, moving hives around the country potentially spreads pests as honeybees intermingle in the fields.
――――――――――――――――――――
Pesticides Hurting Bees Is A MYTH
Theoretical Cause Of BCCD ― Parasites And Pathogens
Known honeybee pests, such as American Foulbrood and Tracheal Mites, do not lead to Colony Collapse Disorder on their own, but it is suspected that they may make bees more susceptible to it.
Beekeepers fear Varroa Mites the most, because they transmit viruses in addition to the direct damage they inflict as a parasite.
The products used to control Varroa Mites further compromise the health of honeybees.
The answer to the Bee Colony Collapse Disorder puzzle might lie in the discovery of a new, unidentified pest or pathogen.
For example, researchers discovered a new species of Nosema in 2006.
Nosema ceranae has been found in the digestive tracts of some honeybees displaying symptoms of Bee Colony Collapse Disorder.
――――――――――――――――――――
Pesticides Hurting Bees Is A MYTH
Theoretical Cause Of BCCD ― Toxins In The Environment
Honeybee exposure to toxins in the environment warrants research since they may be a cause of Bee Colony Collapse Disorder.
Water sources may be unsafe for bees since they are treated to control other insects.
Household or industrial chemicals, through contact or inhalation, might impact foraging bees.
The possibilities for toxins in the environment make pinpointing a definitive cause difficult, but this theory requires attention by scientists.

Theoretical Cause Of BCCD ― Pest Control Products
Anti-Pesticide Activists have alleged that there are « links » between Neonicotinoid Insecticides, like imidacloprid, and the so-called disappearance of commercial honeybees.
Since Neonicotinoid Insecticides are widely used for the control of insect pests in lawns, gardens, ornamental plants, and agriculture, the lunatics have somehow concocted the story that imidacloprid was the reason for the phenomenon of Bee Colony Collapse Disorder.
Of course, this is an Enviro-Lunatic MYTH !
Pest control products CAUSE NO HARM, and DO NOT HURT BEES.
Nonetheless, beekeepers in France have FALSELY ALLEGED that Neonicotinoid Insecticides, when used as a seed treatment for sun-flowers, have affected the behaviour of lots of bees by disrupting mobility, navigation, and feeding behaviour. [ ?!?! ]
Neonicotinoid Insecticides work their way SYSTEMICALLY from the sunflower seed through the plant.
According to beekeepers, the introduction of imidacloprid, and its successor, clothianidin, coincided with a significant drop in honey production.
According to National Union Of French Beekeepers, the number of hives in France has plummeted from 1.45 million in 1996 to one million in 2003.
Between 1995 and 2001, the average production of honey went from seventy-five kg/hive down to thirty kg/hive.
This phenomenon became known as Bee Colony Collapse Disorder.
Guess what ?
Scientific studies concluded that the bees were not being affected by imidacloprid, but by a VIRAL DISEASE.
Guess what happened next ?

Pesticides Hurting Bees Is A MYTH
The History Of Neonicotinoid Insecticides
What’s the story on Neonicotinoid Insecticides ?
Today, Neonicotinoid Insecticides are some of the best-selling insect-control products in the world.
Imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, and clothianindin are active ingredients that belong to the class known as Neonicotinoid Insecticides.
For example, Bayer CropScience has manufactured imidacloprid in Europe since 1991.
In 1995, imidacloprid, under the trade name Admire was granted temporary registration in Canada for the control of the insecticide-resistant Colorado Potato Beetle in Eastern Canada.
In 1999, imidacloprid was first registered in Ontario and Quebec under the trade name Merit for the control of European Chafer and Japanese Beetle larvae in turf.
In 2000, Nu-Gro Corporation was appointed by Bayer as the exclusive supplier of Merit.
In 2004, the registration of Merit was extended to British Columbia and other parts of Canada.
In 2007, the world-wide sales of imidacloprid, and other successors in its class, were reported at a staggering 8.6 BILLION DOLLARS.
Anti-Pesticide Activists have alleged that there are « links » between imidacloprid and the so-called disappearance of commercial honeybees.
Since imidacloprid is widely used for the control of insect pests in lawns, gardens, ornamental plants, and agriculture, Anti-Pesticide Activists have concocted the story that imidacloprid was somehow the reason for a phenomenon called Bee Colony Collapse Disorder.
Since 2006, Bee Colony Collapse Disorder is a phenomenon in which commercial honeybees abruptly disappear, which is worrisome because bees pollinate many agricultural crops.
Greedy and avaricious Anti-Pesticide Activists have concocted all sorts of « causes » for this phenomenon, hoping to attract profits from cash donations, illicit businesses, unqualified employment, and grants, quite often without paying a single penny in taxes.
Of course, overall, these « links » and « causes » are Enviro-Lunatic MYTHS !
When used preventively on small White Grubs in turf, imidacloprid provides excellent residual control, in excess of ninety per cent.
Applications that are soil-drenched have a LOW IMPACT on earthworms and predatory insects.
There are NO measurable adverse effects on bees.
Although some Neonicotinoid Insecticides are toxic to bees upon direct contact ( as are many insecticides ), they are used in a way that MINIMIZES ANY DIRECT EXPOSURE TO BEES, such as SEED TREATMENT.
SEED TREATMENT INSECTICIDES have been used for a decade WITH ALMOST NO INCIDENCES OF NEGATIVE IMPACTS ON BEES by MINIMIZING POTENTIAL EXPOSURES of non-target insects such as bees.
Independent, long-term, controlled field tests have repeatedly shown NO EFFECTS on bee mortality, weight gain, worker longevity, brood development, honey yield, and over-winter survival relative to bees in areas where TREATED SEED was not used.
The AGRICULTURE INDUSTRY HAS A VESTED INTEREST IN PROTECTING honeybees and is committed to thoroughly researching and protecting bee health. Anti-Pesticide Lunatics are WRONG about bees.
In 1999, the French government decided nevertheless to withdraw the use of imidacloprid as a sunflower seed treatment.
By the way, the bee problems continued for several years after the prohibition.
Predictably, the beekeepers suspected that residues are continuing to adversely affect their bees.
The Environmental-Terrorist-Movement has gone berserk over this insecticide.
For example, imidacloprid has ranked as fifth on the Enviro-Terrorist Black List of most hated pest control products ― next to DDT, 2,4-D, glyphosate, and chlorothalonil.
The issue of Bee Colony Collapse Disorder has now spilled over into the United States, where the government has given this nonsense added credibility by deciding to initiate a Research Action Plan.
Additionally, the German Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety has suspended the approval of imidacloprid under the trade names Antarc, Chinook, Faibel, and Gaucho.
On June 16th, 2008, Greenpeace, an Environmental-Terrorist-Organization, issued a press release claiming that Bayer CropScience, the manufacturer of imidacloprid, has produced pest control products that are the so-called biggest threat to human health and the environment.
Other manufacturers on the Greenpeace list include ― Syngenta, Monsanto, and Dow Chemical.
On August 25th, 2008, German Coalition Against Bayer Dangers, another Environmental-Terror-Organization, brought a charge against Werner Wenning, chairman of the Bayer Board Of Management.
German Coalition Against Bayer Dangers accused Bayer CropScience of marketing dangerous insecticides that are leading to the mass deaths of bees all over the world.
Not surprisingly, the charges were introduced in cooperation with German beekeepers, who claim to have lost thousands of hives after poisoning by clothianidin, the successor to imidacloprid.
Meanwhile, the Government of Germany PROHIBITED the sale of these insecticides since May 2008.
On September 19th, 2008, the Government of Italy PROHIBITED the use of all insecticides classified as Neonicotinoid, which include imidacloprid, clothianidin, and others.
By 2012, the MAJORITY of European Union ( EU ) nations DID NOT WANT Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION.
EU Government Officials WERE THINKING TWICE BEFORE BANNING PESTICIDES.
European Union nations were UNABLE TO REACH AGREEMENT on proposals to ARBITRARILY PROHIBIT the use of three Neonicotinoid Insecticides that have been linked to the decline of bees.
A decline in bee numbers has been linked by FALSE ALLEGATIONS regarding Neonicotinoid Insecticides.
The European Commission had called for a two-year EU-wide MORATORIUM ( a.k.a. Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION ), but a MAJORITY of nations still OPPOSED THE PLANS.
European Union nations were UNABLE TO REACH A QUALIFIED MAJORITY in order for PROHIBITION to be adopted.
The EU MAJORITY DECISION AGAINST PROHIBITION was a clear recognition that THERE IS NO CONVINCING ARGUMENT against the continued use of Neonicotinoid Insecticides.
