The first inconvenient truth is that HONEYBEES ARE NOT GOING EXTINCT ― colony numbers are actually increasing in both the U.S. and around the world.
But it is tougher to keep them alive these days, even in the absence of insecticide exposure, due to novel parasites and declining forage.
Then, I visited GROUND ZERO FOR NEONIC USE [ a.k.a. Neonicotinoid Insecticides ] ― the American Corn Belt ― in which up to two of every three acres of ground are planted with Neonic-seed-treated corn or soy.
[ The Corn Belt is a region of the Mid-Western United States where corn has, since the 1850s, been the predominant crop, replacing the native tall grasses. ]

Current Insecticide Issues With Bees Are The Least Ever Seen
To my great surprise, I met many Bee-Keepers who were adamant that CURRENT INSECTICIDE ISSUES WITH BEES WERE THE LEAST THEY’VE EVER BEEN !
To me, that observation, plus the fact that BEES WERE ALSO THRIVING ON SEED-TREATED CANOLA IN CANADA, simply DID NOT INDICATE THAT NEONICOTINOID INSECTICIDES WERE INDEED THE CAUSE OF TODAY’S BEE PROBLEMS.
If they were, how could Bee-Keepers in the middle of the most intense applications not be noticing ?
As a Bee-Keeper and an Environmentalist, I have no particular love for pesticides.
But, the more I investigate insecticide issues and honeybees, the less I feel that they are our number one, or even number two, problem.
But that’s not to say that insecticides are not a problem to Bee-Keepers in some areas.
There are occasionally serious bee kills due to the insecticides from the FUGITIVE DUST involved in the planting of corn ( this is a problem which is being intensively worked on ) and from the spraying of crops with other insecticides while they are in bloom.
And, we have long known that some insecticides cause long-term sub-lethal effects that can result in later colony morbidity or mortality.
So, are the Neonicotinoid Insecticides making things better, or worse ?
When I look at the results of the EXTENSIVE TESTING for insecticide residues in bee hives, what stands out is that the Neonicotinoid Insecticides ARE SELDOM FOUND.
The independent ( meaning trusted by Bee-Keepers ) Penn State researchers conclude that the PYRETHROID INSECTICIDES OVERALL POSE FAR MORE POTENTIAL FOR HARM TO BEES THAN NEONICOTINOID INSECTICIDES.

No Scientific Evidence And No Ground Evidence
So, as attractive as The-Neonics-Are-Causing-The-Extinction-Of-The-Honeybee-Hypothesis is, I simply DON’T FIND IT TO BE SUPPORTED BY EITHER THE SCIENTIFIC NOR ON-THE-GROUND EVIDENCE.
Add to that the fact that NO researcher, despite considerable effort in that direction, HAS EVER SUCCEEDING IN KILLING COLONIES OF BEES BY FEEDING THEM FIELD-REALISTIC DOSES OF NEONICOTINOIDS, even for extended periods of time.
Again, that’s not to say that insecticides are not a serious issue to some unfortunate Bee-Keepers.

Insecticides Other Than Neonicotinoids Are The More Likely Problem
Devastating insecticide spray kills are regrettably all too common, and some agricultural areas are known to Bee-Keepers as death traps.
When I look at the insecticide use in those areas, and at residue analyses of combs, it appears that INSECTICIDES OTHER THAN THE NEONICOTINOIDS ARE MORE LIKELY THE PROBLEM.

Neonicotinoid Insecticides Are Reduced Risk Insecticides
The evidence to date appears to support the claim that Neonicotinoid Insecticides are indeed REDUCED RISK INSECTICIDES ( with certain caveats regarding planting dust, foliar and drench applications, and landscape use, for which I have some misgivings ).
Agricultural insecticides have always been a problem for bees.
But things are clearly better these days than in the past.
We’ve phased out the worst insecticides.
I can’t say with certainly that the Neonicotinoids are better, but when used carefully, they certainly appear to be an improvement as we transition to even more so-called friendly biologicals, new technologies, and Integrated Pest Management.
We’ve still got a long way to go in protecting pollinators, but we seem to be moving in the right direction.

Background Information From An Independent Perspective
Is There Any Connection Between Neonicotinoid Insecticides And Long-Term Honey Bee Losses ?
Overall, there is NO LEGITIMATE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE TO SUGGEST A LINK between Neonicotinoid Insecticides and long-term honey bee losses in Canada.
There is NO GEOGRAPHICAL CORRELATION between long-term bee losses and insecticide use.
Although some Neonicotinoid Insecticides are toxic to bees upon direct con-tact ( as are many insecticides ), they are used in a way that MINIMIZES ANY DIRECT EXPOSURE TO BEES.
Under normal field use, THE EXPOSURE TO BEES IS AT VERY LOW LEVELS, FAR TOO LOW TO CAUSE HARMFUL EFFECTS.
Independent, long-term, controlled field tests have repeatedly shown NO EFFECTS on bee mortality, weight gain, worker longevity, brood development, honey yield, and over-winter survival relative to bees in areas where treated seed was not used.
Many of these studies have been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences.

Overall, throughout the rest of the world, there is NO LEGITIMATE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE THAT SUGGESTS A LINK between Neonicotinoid Insecticides and bee deaths, or Bee Colony Collapse Disorder.
These scenarios are possibilities that have not yet been proven.
At the very least, Health Canada should consider these possibilities during its investigation.
However, Health Canada should further investigate as to WHY ONLY A VERY LIMITED NUMBER OF BEE-KEEPERS WERE AFFECTED.
Between April and June 2012, Health Canada received only A SMALL NUMBER OF REPORTS OF BEE LOSSES from across southern Ontario, involving a MERE 40 BEE-KEEPERS, as well as 1 report from Quebec.
At present, there are 2,900 Bee-Keepers in Ontario, therefore, the affected Bee-Keepers represent less than 1.5 per cent of all Bee-Keepers in Ontario.
In 2013, Health Canada said it continued to receive A VERY SMALL NUMBER of bee mortality reports from both corn- and soybean-growing regions of Ontario and Quebec, as well as Manitoba.
Again, WHY ARE ONLY A VERY SMALL NUMBER OF BEE-KEEPERS AFFECTED ?!?!
WHY ARE MERE UNSCIENTIFIC REPORTS FROM BEE-KEEPERS CONSIDERED AS SUFFICIENT EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT A DECISION FROM HEALTH CANADA ?!?!

Moreover, Health Canada should be TESTING the Bee-Keepers’ RESIDENCES and CLOTHING for residue.
