The national survey by Canadian Association of Professional Apiculturists puts winter losses in Ontario at 38 per cent.
By comparison, Ontario Provincial Apiarist report has commercial losses at 38 per cent ― and small scale producer losses at 37 per cent.
While there has been a SIGNIFICANT DROP from the 2013-14 winter losses ― that’s still above the industry’s [ arbitrary and unrealistic ] target of 15 per cent.
The factor cited by most Ontario producers for winter loss was STARVATION at just over 19 per cent, followed by WEAK COLONIES IN THE FALL and POOR QUEENS, both at about 15 per cent.
[ A mere ] 9 per cent of the bee-keepers [ arbitrary and maliciously ] blamed their losses on CHRONIC INSECTICIDE DAMAGE, while [ a mere ] 6 per cent blamed ACUTE INSECTICIDE DAMAGE.
[ These bee-keepers unilaterally blame their losses on insecticides used by the agriculture industry. They do so without the support of any scientific tests. Bee-keepers know almost nothing about pest control products. They are the least credible and the least qualified to provide any advice concerning neonicotinoid insecticides, and therefore, cannot be trusted. Figures released by Ontario Provincial Apiarist line up pretty closely with Ontario bee-keeper losses reported earlier by the Canadian Association of Professional Apiculturists.
Canadian Association of Professional Apiculturists only surveys commercial bee-keepers ― whereas Ontario Provincial Apiarist surveys both commercial and small-scale producers.
The HIGHEST WINTER LOSSES were reported in Northern Ontario, at just over 63 per cent.
Southern Ontario ― including Wellington, Huron, Perth and Waterloo ― had 44 per cent losses.
Central Ontario, including Bruce and Grey, came in at just over 34 per cent.
Bee-keepers in Eastern Ontario, at about 25 per cent, and South-Western Ontario at 23 per cent reported the LOWEST WINTER LOSSES.
In both reports, the data is voluntarily self-reported by the bee-keepers themselves and has not been verified by OMAFRA or any other independent body.

At present, there are 3,100 registered bee-keepers in Ontario.
This represents 45 per cent of bee-keepers in Canada.
The 100,000 managed honey bee colonies in Ontario represent 17 per cent of the honey bee population in Canada.
Two hundred and thirty commercial bee-keepers manage 80,000 of the 100,000, or 80 per cent, of the colonies in the province.
