In response to [ a ] recent editorial about the health risks associated with pest control products, here are the following factual information and thoughts ―
It is time to STOP SPREADING A MESSAGE OF FEAR, and instead take a leadership role in educating the public on the SAFE AND EFFECTIVE USE OF PEST CONTROL PRODUCTS.
The supporters of legislation requiring more stringent monitoring and reporting of the use of pest control products are scared because they believe that pesticides are dangerous.
But, THEY DO NOT HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE OR THE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THEIR THEORIES.
The Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health both RECOMMEND THE USE OF PEST CONTROL PRODUCTS to prevent diseases like Malaria, West-Nile Virus, Asthma, Dengue Fever, and other illnesses.
The facts are that the pest control products that professional pest control operators use are LESS LETHAL TO HUMANS THAN CAFFEINE.
Pest control products today are engineered based on insect biology, and are meant to KEEP US SAFE when used correctly.
As a matter of fact, some of the pest control products used today HAVE NO WARNING LABEL AT ALL, UNLIKE THE SUBSTANCES KEPT UNDER KITCHEN SINKS.

Pest control products used in the Urban Landscape will SELECTIVELY AND EFFECTIVELY CONTROL disease, insect, and weed pests, but are COMPLETELY SAFE for other non-target organisms ― they DO NOT INJURE TURFGRASSES, and have NO persistence beyond season of use.
These products can be USED SAFELY because the amount required to affect human health is SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER than any potential level of exposure.
The concept that a low level of exposure to a substance will not adversely affect human ties directly into the fundamental principle of toxicology ― the study of negative effects on living systems ― that « the dose makes the poison ».
People are exposed daily to numerous MAN-MADE AND NATURAL SUBSTANCES that may impact human health, but are CAUSE NO HARM in small doses ( example, low levels of naturally-occurring cyanide in almonds ), and conversely, ORDINARY HARMLESS SUBSTANCES that can be HIGHLY TOXIC OR DEADLY if not used properly or over-consumed ( example, water ).
The RISKS of pest control products are EXTENSIVELY ASSESSED by Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ) and Health Canada to ensure that they are SCIENTIFICALLY-SAFE when used properly.

The RISK ASSESSMENTS of pest control products indicate that they are PRACTICALLY-NON-TOXIC, especially when used in the Urban Landscape.
In order to prove that these products are SCIENTIFICALLY-SAFE, their RISK ASSESSMENT can be measured in the laboratory.
In order to evaluate RISK ASSESSMENT, toxicologist measure a product’s Median Lethal Dose Value, LD50 ( abbreviation for the « Lethal Dose, 50 per cent » ), which represents the dose that is fatal for 50 per cent of an experimental group of laboratory animals, in most cases rats.
THE HIGHER THE LD50 VALUE, THE LEAST TOXIC THE PRODUCT.
THE LOWER THE LD50 VALUE, THE MORE TOXIC THE PRODUCT.
The LD50 VALUE has been measured as ACUTE ORAL TOXICITY ( LD50, rat ) for all conventional pest control products, as well as so-called green alternative pesticides, and household items as well.
From the LD50 VALUE, the RISK ASSESSMENT for these products and items are ranked with the following statements ― Relatively Harmless, Practically Non-Toxic, Slightly Toxic, Moderately Toxic, and Highly Toxic.
All LD50 VALUES for green alternative pesticides and conventional pest control products can be obtained from material safety data sheets.
Overall, LD50 VALUES have indicated that most green alternative pesticides and household items are NOT SAFER when compared to conventional pest control products.
Pest control products used in the Urban Landscape are SCIENTIFICALLY-SAFE and CAUSE NO HARM.
RISK ASSESSMENTS PROVE that pest control products can be SAFELY USED, and the public should feel comfortable if they choose to use them.
