Worry about pollinator health and pesticides is NOT warranted, despite what the American Honey Producers Association may say.
Bee health is impacted by a number of factors, including nutrition, weather conditions, and beekeeping practices.
In fact, the MAIN CAUSES of colony losses during the 2015-16 winter were poor queens, Varroa Mites, weak colonies, and weather conditions, according to Canadian bee-keepers.
Canadian bee-keepers, like Canadian farmers, produce some of the best products in the world.
People should be confident consuming honey and other food produced by our hard-working farmers.
Before any pest control product can be sold in Canada, it must be approved by Health Canada.
Canada’s regulatory process is stringent, world-renowned, and ensures all pest control products that are used in Canada ARE SAFE FOR BOTH PEOPLE AND THE ENVIRONMENT.
Farmers choose to use neonicotinoid-treated seed because it is A SAFE AND EFFECTIVE WAY TO PROTECT THEIR CROPS WHILE ALSO MINIMIZING EXPOSURES TO BENEFICIAL INSECTS LIKE BEES.

Neonicotinoid-Treated Seeds DO NOT Harm Bees
In the agriculture industry, neonicotinoid-treated seeds are safe and effective way to protect their crops while also minimizing exposures to beneficial insects like bees.
Overall, so-called links and causes between bee colony collapse disorder and neonicotinoid insecticides are mere MYTHS !
When used properly, neonicotinoid insecticides will selectively and effectively control insect pests, but are completely safe for other non-target organisms ― they DO NOT harm bees, and have NO persistence beyond the season of use.
Although some neonicotinoid insecticides can be toxic to bees upon direct contact ( as are many so-called green alternatives ), for decades, they have been used in a way that minimizes any potential direct exposure to bees, such as coated-seed treatment.
This Best Management Practice ensures that the potential exposure to bees is at very low levels, far too low to cause harmful effects.
Consequently, neonicotinoid insecticides will cause NO harm to bees because coated-seeds are buried in the soil, rendering the insecticides inaccessible to bees and other non-target organisms.
Moreover, these insecticides systemically penetrate into the plant tissues where they remain inaccessible to bees.
Bees do NOT consume plant tissues, and, therefore, are NOT harmed by neonicotinoid insecticides.

Mr Petelle’s work in representing Canada’s plant science industry also includes increasing the awareness, understanding and acceptance of the benefits, safety and sustainability of plant science innovations.
Prior to joining CropLife Canada, Mr Petelle held the position of Section Head of Policy ( Senior Policy Analyst ) at Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency where he worked with a broad group of stake-holders on a wide range of issues important to Canada’s plant science industry.
Mr Petelle holds an environmental biology degree from the University of Guelph, and a biology degree from Carleton University.
