Summary – Overview
New Canaan
Officials Now Support The Use
Of Pesticides On Sports Fields
Victory against anti-pesticide prohibition ―
New Canaan is a town in the state of Connecticut, USA, with a population of almost 20,000. It is known for its vast urban green spaces such as Waveny Park. By prohibiting conventional pest control products, sports fields in New Canaan, had become pest-infested & dangerous garbage dumps because it was impossible to control weed invasions & insect infestations by using pesticide-free ( a.k.a. organic ) IPM doctrines that include inferior-green alternatives. Pesticide-treated sports fields are far superior to those that are pesticide-free.
Municipalities, like New Canaan, must be well-informed about the risks, benefits, & limitations of conventional pest control products, as well as inferior green alternative pesticides & IPM doctrines that DO NOT work. Fanatжcal pesticide-free doctrines of Integrated Pest Management ( IPM ) are based upon mere truth-challenged emotion & NOT science-based facts. The failed, futile, & ineffective IPM doctrines have unfairly allowing New Canaan to use pesticides when it suit its politically-correct agenda ! Unfortunately, IPM is #@!!% nonsense & WILL NOT work. IPM is inappropriate for the maintenance of turfgrasses. IPM WILL NOT control infestations of recurring invasive weeds & destructive insects. New Canaan’s use of IPM is politically-correct rubbish.
The safety of players using sports fields is the most important aspect of maintaining turfgrass. Municipalities, like New Canaan, are expected to be really careful about risks when using their sports fields, especially about head injuries, because that can create a sense of liability that municipal officials must be concerned about. Sports fields that DO NOT receive treatments of conventional pest control products will have harder surfaces, predictably they are more likely to cause player injuries like concussions.
Officials in New Canaan have concluded that the use of conventional pest control products on sports fields has a positive effect on their quality, playability, & safety. Municipalities that are NOT using conventional pest control products on any of their sports fields are NOT maintaining them properly. Continuing to use conventional pest control products on sports fields is healthier & safer for players. There should be NO harmful-prohibitions against conventional pest control products. They are simply reckless, arbitrary, & doomed-to-fail.
Science-based research indicates that the bigger safety risk is from player injuries on hard surfaces of sports fields ― & NOT from the use of conventional pest control products. There is NO science-based information that has identified any adverse health concerns with the use of conventional pest control products on sports fields. People are likely to be exposed to only very small amounts of pesticide residues, too small to pose a risk, at levels that are well below the NO-effect level. After a pest control product dries on the turfgrass leaf, it is difficult, if not impossible, to dislodge residues off the leaf surface.
Thinking twice in New Canaan ―
When it comes to pesticide bans, government officials in New Canaan are thinking twice about banning pesticides by looking at the experience of those jurisdictions that have suffered pest-infested & dangerous garbage dumps & stunningly exorbitant costs of this #@!!% nonsense !
There are real trends against pesticide bans ―
The following jurisdictions stopped or rescinded or limited or opposed harmful-prohibition or granted professional lawn care businesses with an exception status ― • Charlottetown • Chicago • Coquitlam • Deer Lake • Delta • Durango • Edmonton • European Union • Everett • Gibsons • Golden • Guelph • Guelph-Eramosa • Hudson • Kamloops • Kauaʻi County • Kelowna • Lawrence • Lincoln City • Maine • Manitoba • Merritt • New Brunswick • New Canaan • Newfoundland • Ontario • Parksville • Port Alberni • Portage La Prairie • Prince Edward Island • Qualicum Beach • Quebec • Regina • Revelstoke • Rossland • Saanich • Saint John’s • Saint Josephine • Salmon Arm • Saskatchewan • Scarborough • Steinbach • Stratford • Stuartburn • Summerside • United Kingdom • USA Pre-Emptions • Vancouver • Vernon • Winkler. The real trends against pesticide bans continue.
No one in New Canaan can afford this #@!!% nonsense ―
Without conventional pest control products, playing surfaces become thin & yellow, & over-run with weeds & infested with insects, resulting in the dismal destruction of safe turf playing surfaces & turning them into garbage dumps. Who wants to live in #@!!% pest-infested garbage dumps in New Canaan just because a small group of fanatжcs seek to impose arbitrary pesticide bans ?!?! Can municipalities & home-owners afford the hardship & cost of this #@!!% pesticide ban nonsense ?!?! NO ! Prohibitions are politically-correct rubbish. The public needs to know more about prohibition failures. It will continue to be impossible for municipal officials in New Canaan to keep its sports fields safe & attractive by using pesticide-free ( a.k.a. organic ) IPM doctrines that include inferior-green alternatives. No one in New Canaan can afford this #@!!% nonsense !

Voting Yes To Pesticides
Continuing To Use Conventional Pest Control Products
On Sports Fields Is Healthier & Safer For Players
Saying it’s HEALTHIER FOR ATHLETES, parks officials VOTED IN FAVOUR of a RECOMMENDATION TO KEEP USING PESTICIDES on New Canaan sports fields where it’s legal to do so.
On December 9th, 2020, members of the « Parks & Recreation Commission » voted 7-1 during their regular meeting to recommend to the « Board of Selectmen » that New Canaan CONTINUE A MID-SUMMER APPLICATION OF PESTICIDES on fields at Conner, Mead Park, and Waveny.
Members of « Parks & Recreation Commission » VOTING IN FAVOUR of the RECOMMENDATION TO KEEP USING PESTICIDES included ― Chair Rona Siegel, Carl Mason, Gene Goodman, Jack Hawkins, Steve Haberstroh, Laura Costigan, and Hank Green.
Pesticide-hating commissioner Francesca Segalas VOTED AGAINST the recommendation.
Matt Konspore and Jake Granito were absent.
Commission member Jack Hawkins said the RECOMMENDATION TO KEEP USING PESTICIDES by « Parks & Recreation Commission » relied on reports from both the « New Canaan Fields Committee » and Parks Superintendent John Howe.
[ HOWEVER ], in New Canaan, high school [ SPORTS ] fields [ WILL REMAIN ] PESTICIDE-FREE.
[ AND ], state law PROHIBITS the use of pesticides on school grounds through grade 8.

A consultant, « Tom Irwin Advisors » of Burlington, Massachusetts, created a report that compared the SURFACE HARDNESS of a grass [ SPORTS ] field treated with pesticides ( Conner Field off of Farm Road ) versus one that’s pesticide-free ( Saxe Middle Schools ).
In making the RECOMMENDATION TO KEEP USING PESTICIDES, the « Parks & Recreation Commission » referred to a memo from the trio at the « New Canaan Fields Committee » ―
• John Howe, Parks Superintendent
• Jay Egan, Athletic Director, New Canaan High School
• Steve Benko, Recreation Director
This trio said [ SPORTS ] FIELDS THAT DO NOT USE PESTICIDES ARE HARDER AND THEREFORE MORE LIKELY TO CAUSE CONCUSSIONS.
According to Jack Hawkins, member of the « Parks & Recreation Commission » who voted in favour of pesticides ―
Because what’s, in my opinion, what’s MOST IMPORTANT is the SAFETY OF THE USERS on those [ SPORTS ] fields.
And the research that we received, the research that we saw, indicates that the BIGGER SAFETY RISK is from sports injuries from a HARD [ SPORTS ] FIELD rather than from the use of pesticides.

Municipal Officials Have Concluded That
The Use Of Conventional Pest Control

Effect On Their Quality, Playability, & Safety
Pesticide-Treated Sports Fields Are Far

The trio, identified as the « New Canaan Fields Committee », cited a 3000-dollar « Core Performance Quality Standards Assessment » of Conner and Saxe fields from consultant « Tom Irwin Advisors ».
According to the memo by the « New Canaan Fields Committee » ―
Based on the information provided in the [ TOM IRWIN ADVISORS ] report, the data shows that THE USE OF PESTICIDES on Conner Field has had a POSITIVE EFFECT on the QUALITY AND SAFETY of that field for athletic contests.
The other Park facilities that receive a ONCE-A-YEAR APPLICATION OF PESTICIDES are located at Waveny Park and Mead Park.
While these [ SPORTS ] fields were not included in the study completed by Tom Irwin Associates, it is our opinion that the QUALITY AND PLAYABILITY of these natural grass fields are FAR ABOVE those at Saxe [ MIDDLE SCHOOL ].

Concerns With The Use Conventional
Pest Control Products On Sports Fields
Parks Superintendent John Howe said during the meeting that he takes an « environmental-sensitive approach » to turf management ―
[ … ] where we look at all the environmental factors and we use every single tool we can, from managing our water to checking life cycles of insects, so you are not just applying chemicals for the sake of applying chemicals.
You are applying them to just go after the target organism as a last resort.
You do everything else that’s positive ― fertilization, irrigation, aerification, over-seeding, even proper mowing with sharp blades, and keeping the height of cut adjusted depending on the time of year.
It was unclear whether consultant « Tom Irwin Advisors », « Parks & Recreation Commission », or « New Canaan Fields Committee » limited their reviews to [ SPORTS ] field conditions or whether they also included the health impacts of pesticide use. [ ?!?! ]
Jack Hawkins, member of the « Parks & Recreation Commission » who voted in favour of pesticides, helped draft a memo that said ―
There was no material provided to us that identified any adverse health concerns [ ?!?! ] of the Park Department’s current [ FANATЖCAL DOCTRINES OF INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT, IPM ] approach to their athletic fields.
Though Recreation officials filed a public records request for the memo by the « New Canaan Fields Committee », they said they DID NOT have the report by Parks Superintendent Howe.

Background Information
Pesticide Residues
No detectible residues ―
Dr Keith R Solomon, a University of Guelph CELEBRATED toxicologist, published a DEFINITIVE study on human exposure to 2,4-D herbicide.
Solomon & Shelley Harris recruited 10 volunteers to sit, stand, & roll on a plot of grass 24 hours after a 2,4-D herbicide application.
5 volunteers wore long sleeves & pants & 5 volunteers wore shorts & bare feet.
According to Dr Solomon ―
NO DECTECTIBLE RESIDUES WERE FOUND in urine samples supplied by volunteers exposed to sprayed turf 24 hours following application.
See links below.
No-effect level ―
In the same experiment Solomon had volunteers go on the grass one hour after 2,4-D was applied.
Solomon detected 2,4-D in the urine of volunteers who were barefoot & wore shorts, but THE LEVELS WERE WELL BELOW THE NO-EFFECT LEVEL from rat experiments.
According to Dr James S Bus, a scientist in toxicology & mechanistic biology ―
The dose those individuals received [ IN DR SOLOMON’S EXPERIMENT ] was still ONE-THOUSAND TIMES LOWER than the five mg per kg of body weight.
See links below.
Cancer ―
According to Dr Bus, there is NO EVIDENCE that pest control products like 2,4-D cause cancer or any health problems in children.
See links below.
Dislodgeable residues ―
Moreover, according to Dr Gerald R Stephenson & his research team, after a pest control product DRIES ON THE TURFGRASS LEAF, it is DIFFICULT, if not IMPOSSIBLE, to DISLODGE RESIDUES off the leaf surface.
According to Dr Stephenson, with Mark K Sears & Dean G Thompson ―
In field studies … LESS THAN FIVE PER CENT of [ 2,4-D HERBICIDE ] originally applied could be dislodged with a cheese-cloth wipe at day 0.
DISAPPEARANCE OF DISLODGEABLE RESIDUES WAS VERY RAPID.
Less than 0.01 per cent of the applied chemical was DISLODGEABLE after 1 day in turf that received 18 mm of rainfall 1 hour after spraying.
Residues in turfgrass that received no rainfall required 7 days to dissipate to the same level.
In a study in which the clippings were not removed, the disappearance of DISLODGEABLE RESIDUES, when the turf was mowed at 3, 7, & 11 days after application, was nearly as rapid as in unmowed turf.
See links below.

Analysis Of Pesticides
Municipalities Must Be Well-Informed About The Risks,
Benefits, & Limitations Of Conventional Pest Control
Products, As Well As Inferior Green Alternative
Pesticides & IPM Doctrines That Do Not Work
The RECOMMENDATION TO KEEP USING PESTICIDES by the « Parks & Recreation Commission » followed a request from Kathleen Corbet, member of the « Board of Selectmen », for New Canaan to fully DISCLOSE AND REVIEW ANNUALLY ITS USE OF PESTICIDES on the [ SPORTS ] fields.
Corbet questioned why New Canaan continued using the chemicals on some [ SPORTS ] fields used by local kids, and said the town should figure out how much it would cost to MAINTAIN CONSISTENTLY PESTICIDE-FREE FIELDS THROUGH OVER-SEEDING [ WHICH DOES NOT WORK ].
Kathleen Corbet, member of the « Board of Selectmen », said in a draft memo from September 2020 ―
Once further study and review of pesticide usage is engaged, consider public hearings, surveys, or other means by which community input is garnered.
In the last 12 years, new health studies, legislation, alternative products and applications have been developed, and it is appropriate for the [t]own bodies and our community to be well-informed about the risks, benefits, and limitations of pesticides and [ INFERIOR ] organic alternatives [ THAT DO NOT WORK ].
Yet the « Parks & Recreation Commission » pushed back on Selectman Corbet’s recommendation for a budget analysis.
Commission member Jack Hawkins, who helped author the RECOMMENDATION TO KEEP USING PESTICIDES adopted by the « Parks & Recreation Commission », said ―
Because of our conclusion, we really didn’t think it was necessary to go any further into looking at the budget at this time, the BUDGET IMPACT of SWITCHING the [ SPORTS ] fields from a pesticide use field to a pesticide-free field.

Municipalities Are Expected To Be Really
Careful About Risks When Using Their Sports
Fields, Especially About Head Injuries, Because

Municipal Officials Must Be Concerned About
The « Parks & Recreation Commission », in its RECOMMENDATION TO KEEP USING PESTICIDES, did agree with Selectman Kathleen Corbet’s suggestion that New Canaan should DISCLOSE ITS USE OF PESTICIDES on some athletic fields on the town web-site.
To Corbet’s suggestion that New Canaan establish a panel to regularly review the chemicals’ application here and seek public input on their use, the « Parks & Recreation Commission » finds in its RECOMMENDATION TO KEEP USING PESTICIDES ―
[ … ] that this committee already exist in the form of the « New Canaan Fields Committee ».
― a reference to Parks Superintendent John Howe, New Canaan High School Athletic Director Jay Egan, and Recreation Director Steve Benko.
It’s unclear whether, when or how often the « New Canaan Fields Committee » meets ― the town web-site has no listing for « New Canaan Fields Committee » and there is NO record of any past agendas or minutes at the Town Clerk’s office.
Parks Superintendent John Howe, New Canaan High School Athletic Director Jay Egan, and Recreation Director Steve Benko DID serve as ex-officio, non-voting members of group called the « Fields Building Committee » that helped oversee creation of the new turf facilities and track at NCHS.
« Fields Building Committee » met more than one dozen times between 2017 and 2019, according to town records.
The « Board of Selectmen » is scheduled to dissolve the « Fields Building Committee » on December 15th, 2020.
The RECOMMENDATION TO KEEP USING PESTICIDES by « Parks & Recreation Commission » also includes an outside review of the town’s use of pesticides, though qualified.
According to Jack Hawkins, member of the « Parks & Recreation Commission » who voted in favour of pesticides ―
We recommend that the « Board of Selectmen » or a town body help identify either an individual or a party to contribute that input, and most specifically, we believe that input should be from somebody who has the ability to provide some kind of commentary on health issues ― the health of the pesticide use and the health risk to players on the [ SPORTS ] field.
Kathleen Corbet herself, member of the « Board of Selectmen », a guest at the meeting, cautioned the « New Canaan Fields Committee » in its « use of terminology that was used in terms of Saxe field », which she described as « very actively used » ―
We bring in outside towns and organizations come in and play all kinds of sports and so forth.
I want to be really careful about our usage of RISKS and about HEAD INJURIES and so forth because that can create a sense of LIABILITY that we want to be concerned about.

No One In New Canaan Wants
This #@!!% Ban Nonsense
Urban garbage dumps in New Canaan ―
By PROHIBITING conventional pest control products, SPORTS FIELDS in New Canaan, CT, have become pest-infested & dangerous GARBAGE DUMPS because it is IMPOSSIBLE to control weed invasions & insect infestations by using pesticide-free ( a.k.a. organic ) maintenance practices that include INFERIOR-green alternatives.
There should be NO HARMFUL-PROHIBITIONS which are simply RECKLESS, ARBITRARY, & DOOMED-TO-FAIL.
Inferior-green alternatives ―
There are NO viable alternatives to conventional pesticides.
There are only INFERIOR- GREEN ALTERNATIVES ARE MORE HAZARDOUS & WILL NOT WORK.
For the maintenance of turfgrasses, there are NO alternatives that work.
There are NO viable, NO efficacious, NO economical, & NO low-risk alternatives to replace conventional pest control products.
Green alternative pesticides are BOGUS, INFERIOR, & DISMAL FAILURES.
They are sold at STUNNINGLY EXORBITANT COSTS.
Example in Montgomery County ―
In the state of Maryland, Montgomery County’s HARMFUL-PROHIBITION was STUNNINGLY COSTLY.
Its parks department has been forced to use some INFERIOR-GREEN ALTERNATIVES THAT WILL NEVER WORK.
According to Montgomery County’s truth-challenged officials, green spaces will TAKE THREE TO FIVE YEARS TO TRANSITION to green alternatives [ ?!?? ].
However, these same officials allege that these alternatives will make green spaces AESTHETICALLY DIFFERENT.
In other words, residents had better get used to living in an urban landscape that LOOKS LIKE A PEST-INFESTED & DANGEROUS GARBAGE DUMP.
In essence, residents have been told to PUT-UP-&-SHUT-UP !
Montgomery County’s HARMFUL-PROHIBITION is a dismal & ridiculous failure because INFERIOR-green alternative pesticides WILL NOT WORK.
The public must be told why these doctrines are NOT a better choice.
There are NO alternatives to get rid of weeds & insects.
Green alternatives are MORE expensive & MORE work with NO benefits whatsoever.
Montgomery County’s green alternatives are INFERIOR, more hazardous, & WILL NOT WORK.
Example in Edmonton ―
In the province of Alberta, the city of Edmonton announced that it has CEASED the use of the INFERIOR-Fiesta green alternative herbicide to control dandelions that have invaded, choked, & destroyed community PLAYING SURFACES.
Edmonton could no longer afford the INFERIOR-Fiesta weed management program, which has burdened the city with a STUNNING COST of 3,000,000-dollars per year.
Fiesta was almost-TOTALLY-INEFFECTIVE, as well as higher-risk, inadequate, inferior, more toxic, overwhelmingly condemned, & STUNNINGLY EXPENSIVE.
Example in British Columbia ―
PROHIBITIONS are POLITICALLY-CORRECT RUBBISH.
The public needs to know more about PROHIBITION FAILURES.
For example, A MAJOR STUDY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA’S MUNICIPAL BY-LAWS has concluded that PROHIBITIONS against conventional pest control products have been RECKLESS, ARBITRARY, & DOOMED-TO-FAIL.
This is because municipal officials are now CIRCUMVENTING their own PROHIBITIONS by taking advantage of EXCEPTION STATUSES that they have COVERTLY INSERTED in their by-laws.
Furthermore, PROHIBITIONS have led to CATASTROPHIC ECOLOGICAL CARNAGE for tens of thousands of destroyed & ravaged properties every single year.
By PROHIBITING conventional pest control products, PLAYING SURFACES in British Columbia have become pest-infested & dangerous GARBAGE DUMPS because it is IMPOSSIBLE to control weed invasions & insect infestations by using pesticide-free ( a.k.a. organic ) maintenance practices that include INFERIOR-green alternatives.

The REAL Trends
There Are REAL Trends Against Reckless,
Arbitrary, & Doomed-To-Fail Prohibitions
Summary ―
Government officials are no longer readily jumping in favour of RECKLESS, ARBITRARY, & DOOMED-TO-FAIL PROHIBITIONS.
It is clear that pesticide-hating fanatжcs conspire to impose PROHIBITIONS in order to DESTROY our urban green space environments, such as PLAYING SURFACES used by CHILDREN.
Unfortunately, it is IMPOSSIBLE to keep PLAYING SURFACES well-maintained, safe, & attractive without conventional pest control products.
Without these products, PLAYING SURFACES are DESTROYED ― they become thin & yellow, invaded by weeds, & infested with insects.
With PROHIBITIONS, the safety & appearance of PLAYING SURFACES are jeopardized with ECOLOGICAL DISASTERS from uncontrolled & dangerous insects like white grubs, & from invasive & dangerous weeds like dandelions.
With weed invasions & insect infestations, safe turf PLAYING SURFACES are DESTROYED ― CHILDREN are at HIGH-RISK of slipping & tripping & becoming seriously hurt.
In essence, pest control products prevent harm & keep CHILDREN safe from injuries.
There are over SIXTY jurisdictions that have STOPPED or RESCINDED or LIMITED or have begun to REPEAL HARMFUL-PROHIBITIONS, or have granted commercial businesses with an EXCEPTION STATUS.

About NORAHG
We Speak The Whole Truth
When We Take A Look At
NEW CANAAN, CT
From An Independent Perspective
We are the National Organization Responding Against HUJE that conspire to destroy the Green space & other industries ( NORAHG ). As a non-profit & independent organization, we are environmentalists who are dedicated to reporting about truth-challenged pesticide-hating-fanatжcs ( HUJE ) who conspire to destroy businesses that are dependent on the use of safe & effective conventional pest control products. We also report on the work of several highly-rated leading experts who have recognized expertise, training, & background in matters concerning pest control products, & who promote environmental realism & pesticide truths.
Not surprisingly, fanatжcs have demonstrated that they are incapable of processing overwhelming scientific evidence. Should we trust these fanatжcs, who conveniently ignore scientific evidence, & attempt to impose their politicized-doctrines & twisted life-style choices against our society ?!?!
NORAHG was the brain-child of Mr William H Gathercole & his colleagues in 1991. Mr Gathercole is now retired, although his name continues to appear as founder. We dare to defy the fanatжcs by exploring the whole truth from an independent perspective on The Pesticide Truths Web-Site … https://pesticidetruths.com/ If you wish to receive free reports on issues that concern you, please contact us at … force.of.de.nature@gmail.com WILLIAM H GATHERCOLE AND NORAH G
