Proposed Road-Side Weed Control Prohibition Fizzles-Out
Saint John’s is the capital and largest city in Newfoundland and Labrador, with a population of almost 200,000.
In early August 2012, the issue of pest control products became news over Tordon 101, a herbicide used along provincial road-sides.
Provincial Government Officials said the spraying was vital in order to improve visibility and to help prevent moose-vehicle collisions.
Newfoundland has come under fire from lunatics for suggesting that the chemicals used in spraying programs are NO MORE DANGEROUS THAN SALT.
Tordon 101 contains the active ingredient 2,4-D ( 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid ), one of five pesticides BANNED for cosmetic use in the province.
Exceptions have been made for what Provincial Government Officials call non-cosmetic use, including golf courses, agriculture and forestry use, and road-side and infra-structure maintenance.
On September 4th, 2012, Saint John’s City Councillors narrowly VOTED AGAINST a campaign to PROHIBIT against the all-out use of a chemical spray used to control brush along Newfoundland and Labrador’s highways.
Nude-Artist and Anti-Pesticide Lunatic-Councillor Sheilagh O’Leary had proposed a resolution that would call on Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador ( MNL ) to urge the province to PROHIBIT against the use of conventional herbicides, like Tordon 101, to kill road-side brush.
« Bring it before MNL so the entire province can have an opportunity to discuss it. And I think as the capital city of our province, of Newfoundland and Labrador, we should be taking leadership on this issue », O’Leary told council during its public meeting on September 4th, 2012.
The City of Saint John’s does not use Tordon 101 on its own parks and facilities.
The province has, though, defended the use of Tordon 101 to control brush in order to prevent moose-vehicle collisions.
Several councillors DID NOT SHARE O’LEARY’S CONCERN.
After a tie vote, Mayor Dennis O’Keefe VOTED AGAINST THE PROPOSED PROHIBITION, bringing the vote to 5-4.
Councillor Wally Collins believes the dangers of Tordon 101 are being EXAGGERATED.
« Out our way, we’re using pesticides worse than [ that ] », said Collins, who represents a largely agricultural part of the city.
« You just heard Councillor O’Leary say they cause smaller babies [ but ] look at the farmers in our way, and none of them are too small … I don’t think they're very weak or dying of cancer, anymore than anybody else. »

O’Leary believes, and wants the public to believe, that Health Canada’s assessment of pest control products is somehow erroneous and unreliable, because its endorsement is based on research it receives from the businesses that produce them.
Non-Expert O’Leary is apparently unfamiliar with the concept of independent third-party verification.
According to Health Canada, the manufacturers of pest control products submit their research data to its Pest Management Regulatory Agency, which then checks it against other research that has been conducted on the substance, to see if the company’s safety claims are valid.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the World Health Organization use the same method.
O’Leary prefers to deal in politics rather than scientific facts.
Moreover, O’Leary has NO competent expertise, recognized training, or background, in matters concerning pest control products.
O’Leary is blatantly and consistently WRONG with her opinions and recommendations.
O’Leary’s expertise cannot be valid since her educational background is in FINE ARTS, and her work background is in NUDE PHOTOGRAPHY.
Overall, the opinions of O’Leary are TOTALLY VALUELESS and UTTERLY WORTHLESS in matters in matters concerning pest control products.
Health Canada, and NOT Sheilagh O’Leary, has THE ESSENTIAL EXPERTISE on the subject of pest control products.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Minister of Transportation and Works says that A ROAD-SIDE WEED CONTROL PROGRAM IS NECESSARY TO KEEP HIGHWAYS SAFE, with Tordon 101, which is NO MORE DANGEROUS THAN SALT.
Tordon 101 is a herbicide used along road-sides that contains the active ingredients 2,4-D and picloram.
