Revelstoke city council held a special council meeting on Tuesday, April 17th, 2018.
Here are some briefs from Tuesday’s council meeting :
City To Explore Cosmetic Pesticide Exemption For Invasive Species
On October 4th, 2011, city of Revelstoke legislated & imposed its prohibition against conventional pest control products used on both residential properties & city-owned green spaces.
Two years earlier, in June 2009, Revelstoke had self-imposed prohibition on all of its parks and playing fields.
The city is now exploring REVISING THE BAN to allow for pesticide use for invasive species.
Revelstoke city council denied a request to allow individuals with a BC Residential Applicator Certificate ( RAC ) to apply legal domestic-class pesticides to their residential property.
A recommendation from the Environmental Advisory Committee to allow an EXCEPTION to the prohibition by-law to treat invasive species DID get approval.
There was some discussion around making sure revisions to the prohibition by-law didn’t create unintended loopholes.
« Whatever system we put in place needs to be strict. I don’t have difficulty exploring the exception for invasive species, but only if it were changed so the wording is more specific, » said councillor Aaron Orlando.
Environmental sustainability coordinator Penny Page-Britton said there is a need to treat invasive species but specific wording is needed.
City of Revelstoke operations manager Darren Komonoski said the use of legal domestic-class pesticides could be helpful in the removal of invasive plant species such as Japanese Knotweed.
NORAHG Response
Revelstoke’s Politically-Correct Environmental-Rubbish !
There should be NO #@!!% exception statuses whatsoever, even for Japanese Knotweed. The audacity and hypocrisy of Revelstoke’s municipal officials is clearly evident when they circumvent their own prohibition by taking advantage of exceptions that they wrote into their by-law.
Consequently, Revelstoke’s municipal prohibition against conventional pest control products has become a dismal failure. Its failed prohibition has been extremely biased and highly prejudicial.
Revelstoke’s prohibition allows thousands and thousands of exception statuses for agricultural and golf facilities that use the very same products that are being banned on city-owned and residential properties. Prohibition has cost tax-payers exorbitant increases of $20,000 and more for maintaining pesticide-free sports fields. And now, Revelstoke’s municipal officials are exploring revising their prohibition to allow hundreds more exception statuses for invasive weeds like Japanese Knotweed.
If it is not safe to walk on pesticide-treated lawns, then it is certainly not safe to play near pesticide-treated weeds, or on pesticide-treated golf courses.
There should be NO #@!!% exception statuses whatsoever. Revelstoke’s municipal prohibition has become a dismal failure.
