Summerside is the second largest city in the province of Prince Edward Island with a population of almost 15,000.

 

A motion before Summerside council to prohibit the use of some lawn care chemicals was defeated Monday night, and the process for a new [ anti-pesticide ] by-law in the P.E.I. city was started.

 

 

 

 

Summerside Mayor Bill Martin campaigned on a [ so-called ] cosmetic pesticide prohibition.  (CBC)

 

The debate went on for more than an hour before the motion was voted down.

 

But another motion was put on the floor and passed.  It will see the development of a public education campaign around alternative products, and following that campaign a new bylaw.

 

Mayor Bill Martin was disappointed.  A big part of his election campaign was imposing some kind of prohibition.

 

“Decisions are made by council, you need to respect that.  True democracy recognizes that you’re not always going to get your way,” said Martin.

 

“I supported and continue to support a ban on cosmetic pesticides.  I think the way the process has unfolded and is unfolding will likely see that happen, but probably a year later than I would have liked to have seen it.”

 

In the original motion the prohibition would have come into effect in March 2016.

 

In the new plan the educational component will take most of next year and a will have a bylaw drafted by September that could go into effect by March 2017.

How discouraging.  It’s very apparent that some people really don’t care about the environment or the health of their families, especially their children.  This shows lack of foresight and lack of intelligence.  This mindset about having the perfect lawn is ridiculous.  We don’t use pesticides of any kind on our property and we don’t water our lawn.  We have Hosta in flower beds which doesn’t need watering.  Mayor Martin, don’t give up on this as you are doing the right thing, trying to get pesticide ban enforced.   [ ?!?! ]

Educational component ?  Give me a break.  This issue has been around long enough.  The Precautionary Principle adopted by the Supreme Court in 2001 states that when there is an element of doubt about the safety of pesticides, legislative bodies should err on the side of safety to protect its citizens.  That said, at least there’s some hope on the horizon, but it’s too bad that people in Summerside will be exposed to these toxic chemicals for yet another year.   [ ?!?! ]

[ Pesticide-Hating Councillor ] Gordie Whitlock’s resolution calling for a city-wide prohibition on the use cosmetic pesticides as of March 1, 2016, was defeated Monday night. [ November 16th, 2015 ]

 

At least a year before potential prohibition of [ so-called ] cosmetic pesticides would be passed by Summerside council

 

It will be at least a year before a potential by-law banning the use of cosmetic pesticides is passed by Summerside city council.

 

Council voted down a resolution by [ Pesticide-Hating Councillor ]  Gordie Whitlock, which, if adopted, would have imposed as of March 1, 2016, a city-wide cosmetic pesticide prohibition.

 

Instead, council passed a resolution, introduced mere minutes after the vote, by Councillor Brian McFeely, which would see the development of a public education campaign and, later, a draft by-law that prohibits the use of [ so-called ] cosmetic pesticides.

 

That by-law, if passed, would not be enacted until March 2017.

 

“It is a democracy and the majority of the folks didn’t want to have an immediate [ anti-pesticide ] ban. I think it is a mistake, but that’s only my opinion,” [ Pesticide-Hating Councillor ] Whitlock said after the meeting.  “What essentially we have decided is that we are going to allow pesticide companies to continue to put poison on lawns in Summerside for another full year.”  [ ?!?! ]

 

“I just pray that we don’t regret that decision.”  [ ?!?! ]

 

 

[  BACKGROUND INFORMATION  ―  Pest control products are scientifically safe and cause no harm.  Anti-pesticide prohibition is unnecessary because Health Canada already registers these substances for use in Canada.  Indisputable and conclusive scientific research shows that, as reported through Health Canada’s vast toxicology database, no harm will occur when pest control products are used according to label directions.  Pest control products are one of the most stringently regulated products.  The risk assessment of pest control products used in the urban landscape indicates that they are practically-non-toxic.  The toxicity of these products is not very high when compared to table salt.  There is not a single legitimate health expert who demands anti-pesticide prohibition.  ]

 

 

[ Pesticide-Hating Councillors ] Whitlock and Brent Gallant cast the only votes against McFeely’s motion and they were the only supporters of the resolution for city-wide [ anti-pesticide ] prohibition by March 2016.

 

Under McFeely’s resolution, the education component would take about a year with the hope that an [ anti-pesticide ] by-law is presented to council, passed and in effect by March 2017.

 

The consensus during the hour-long, sometimes heated debate on the original resolution was that a cosmetic pesticide prohibition was needed  —  and supported around the table  —  but many councillors felt a properly researched by-law should be drafted by city staff and presented to council for approval.

 

There were also concerns raised about enforcement and the province’s role in a prohibition.

 

“We need to transition into these things and spend some time educating the public on what the alternatives [ ?!?! ] are and having them understand that there is a policy coming forth that perhaps all of us, me included, need to change some of our approaches to dealing with managing our lawns,” said McFeely.

“We need some time to understand what’s included in the policy and what’s excluded from the policy.  I don’t think it is simple as adopting someone else’s policy and thinking that it is going to work for us.”

 

Gallant proposed an amendment to Whitlock’s resolution that recommended council adopt a bylaw similar to that adopted by Stratford earlier this year.  He also suggested the public be given a reprieve on tickets during the by-law’s first year.

 

“We have to start this along somewhere,” said Gallant.

 

The suggestion didn’t sit well with several councillors, including McFeely, and the proposed amendment was voted down 6-2.

 

“We are our own community and we should take the time to develop our own policy in that regards,” he said after the meeting.  “There is no bylaw in front of us to even consider and here we are in the second half of November.  Developing policy takes time.  We have January, February, March.”

 

“I had absolutely no issue with the intent of the original motion at all. My issue was with the timing of it.”

 

Whitlock said cosmetic pesticides are “poison” and delaying a ban could be deadly.  [ ?!?! ]

 

“Kids don’t read signs.  Dogs and cats don’t read signs.  They run across lawns that have been sprayed and it is dangerous.  It is simple as that.”  [ ?!?! ]

On March 15th, 2010, Uncle Adolph independently launched The Pesticide Truths, an easy-to-use Web-Site that collects relevant reports of information right-off-the-press.

 

Primus inter pares, first among equals, describes Pesticide Truths, Uncle Adolph, and Force Of Nature  ―  they are formally equal to each other and are all accorded equal respect.

 

The reports and blogs from Pesticide Truths, Uncle Adolph, and Force Of Nature, in some ways, are like Google for everything concerning the SUBVERSIVE ACTIVITIES of Anti-Pesticide and Enviro-Lunatic Terrorists.

 

Many of these reports and blogs provide a sequence of historical events WITH COMMENTARY, the neutrality of which might be disputed.
