A MAJOR VICTORY For The United Kingdom’s Agricultural Industry
In some parts of the United Kingdom ( UK ), growers will now be able to resume the nation-wide use of Neonicotinoid Insecticides after the government SUSPENDED the ARBITRARY PROHIBITION imposed by the European Union ( EU ) Commission.
In December, 2013, a PANICKED Commission RECKLESSLESSLY IMPOSED a two-year PROHIBITION against Neonicotinoid Insecticides, based upon a FALSE JUDGEMENT by its European Food Safety Authority concerning SKETCHY REPORTS of higher-than-normal winter bee losses.
The EU PROHIBITION was FORCED THROUGH by the European Union Commission AFTER MEMBER NATIONS FAILED TO REACH A DEFINITIVE DECISION [ and MOST DID NOT WANT PROHIBITION ].
The EU PROHIBITION was based upon research showing various so-called « SUB-LETHAL EFFECTS » on bees exposed to the chemicals in LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS, including reduced colony growth and impaired foraging and homing behaviour.
The majority of EU nations, like the United Kingdom, DID NOT ( and DO NOT ) WANT PROHIBITION, which is a clear recognition that there is NO convincing argument against Neonicotinoid Insecticides.
The EU’s PROHIBITION was IMPOSED despite contradictory field evidence clearly demonstrating that bee health had been improving globally even with the use of Neonicotinoid Insecticides.
Moreover, PROHIBITION was CATASTROPHIC to growers, and was NOT at all helpful to bees.
It is perhaps worth pointing out that France PROHIBITED against Neonicotinoid Insecticides in the 1990s, and it has seen NO marked reduction in so-called Bee Colony Collapse Disorder.
In the United Kingdom ( UK ), two Neonicotinoid Insecticides can now be used for 120 days on about 5 per cent of England’s canola ( a.k.a. rapeseed ) crop to control the Cabbage Stem Flea Beetle.
According to Guy Smith, Vice-President of National Farmers Union ( NFU ) ―
The NFU has worked relentlessly to submit a robust application, and we’re glad to finally see a positive result.
However, we know that this [ suspension of prohibition ] isn’t enough ― flea beetle threat is a wide-spread problem on a national scale, and the extremely limited nature of this authorisation is unfortunately not going to help the vast majority of farmers in need of the protection [ provided by Neonicotinoid Insecticides ].
The National Farmers Union ( NFU ) said the late timing of the decision would make it near impossible for many growers to take advantage of the SUSPENSION OF PROHIBITION.
An earlier emergency application by the National Farmers’ Union ( NFU ) for a nation-wide SUSPENSION OF PROHIBITION had been rejected.

The majority of the research that has fueled this debate has been BASED ON ARTIFICIAL DOSING STUDIES.
The big question in this area is, does this accurately reflect what happens to bees foraging in and around neonicotinoid crops ?
We don’t know, but the field studies have NOT shown that they [ Neonicotinoid Insecticides ] are causing population declines in pollinators.

The EU put in place the ban on neonics, but if scientists start telling us that these things are safer than they thought, then perhaps we can licence them.

The Government of Great Britain has announced that, in some areas of the country, it will be BRIEFLY LEGAL for Neonicotinoid Insecticides to be used.
Hopefully, Neonicotinoid Insecticides will be FULLY LEGAL soon since PROHIBITION WAS AN OVER-REACTION.
According to the British Broadcasting Corporation ( BBC ), the decision comes after British growers made a second plea for relief since the PROHIBITION was NEGATIVELY-AFFECTING their canola crop yields.
Where the growers can use the Neonicotinoid Insecticides has not yet been determined, but the restriction was lifted for four months’ use on 5 per cent of Britain’s canola ( a.k.a. rapeseed ) crops or 116 miles of land.
While it welcomes the Government of Great Britain’s decision, the National Farmers Union ( NFU ), that lobbied for relief from the PROHIBITION, states it maybe too little too late.
According to Dr Chris Hatfield, representative of National Farmers Union ( NFU ) ―
It is very nip and tuck.
There is a lead time involved for the farmer.
They will have to get hold of the seed, have to treat it, and have to apply it.
For some, it will come too late.
For others, they fall outside the area, which is mainly in the east of England.
The United Kingdom’s Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs ( DEFRA ) gave the THUMBS UP FOR RELIEF AGAINST NEONICOTINOID PROHIBITION for British growers after a committee for the agency and its chief scientist stated they APPROVED OF LIMITED USE.

At the end of March 2015, Reading University suggested that BEES PREFER HABITATS IN THE CITY, and not rural areas, as originally thought.

Key Findings
One part of the FIELD STUDIES looked at residue levels in pollen and nectar collected from bees exclusively foraging in flowering thiamethoxam SEED-TREATED maize and canola ( a.k.a. rapeseed ) [ thiamethoxam a.k.a. Cruiser, a Neonicotinoid Insecticide ].
The FIELD STUDIES found thiamethoxam residue levels were « TYPICALLY LOW » with median values between less than 1 and 7 µg/kg for pollen and less than 0.5 and 4 µg/kg for nectar.
These were MUCH LOWER than the doses that showed sub-lethal effects in the laboratory studies.
Residues in hive samples were CONSISTENTLY LOWER than residues in pollen and nectar samples collected from bees, indicating dilution and/or degradation of residue in the hive following collection.
In the other part of the FIELD STUDIES considered the long-term risk to honey bee colonies from four years consecutive single treatment crop exposures to flowering maize and canola ( a.k.a. rapeseed ) grown from thiamethoxam-TREATED seeds [ Cruiser, a Neonicotinoid Insecticide ].
Bee colony health was compared with bee colonies located near UN-TREATED fields.
During the exposure period, when bee colonies were placed adjacent to TREATED and UN-TREATED fields, the number of dead bees, foraging behavior, colony strength, brood development and food storage levels were, on average, SIMILAR between TREATED and UN-TREATED bee colonies.
By monitoring the weight of colonies throughout the four-year period, it was evident that there were also NO SUBSTANTIAL LOSSES of foraging bees exposed to TREATED crops in the field.
Detailed examination of brood development throughout the year demonstrated that colonies exposed to the TREATED crop were also ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY OVER-WINTER, and had a SIMILAR HEALTH STATUS to the UN-TREATED bee colonies in the following spring.
