Overview
Portage la Prairie is a small city in the Central Plains Region of Manitoba, Canada with a population of 13,000.
The city has an aggressive tree planting program and is known for its mature urban forest.
A collection of some of the largest Cottonwood trees in Canada line the west end of the main street known as Saskatchewan Avenue, and, along with many other varieties, are present throughout the city.
Opposing Pesticide Ban
The Rural Municipality of Portage La Prairie is OPPOSING the Province of Manitoba’s proposed PROHIBITION against pest control products used in the Urban Landscape throughout.
Councillor Kevin Blight is concerned about the Province of Manitoba’s PROPOSED PESTICIDE BAN, saying these products are needed to control weeds and insects on farms and properties in the municipality.
Councillor Blight said while there are other ORGANIC METHODS to control weeds, they have NOT BEEN PROVEN AS EFFECTIVE AS conventional pest control products.

According to Councillor Blight ―
As a council, we are OPPOSED TO THE PROPOSED BAN by the provincial government to ban the use of COSMETIC PESTICIDES.
The main reason why we are opposed is the bottom line is IT IS GOING TO COST ( MORE ) money, and it could CAUSE PROBLEMS down the road for the municipality, for agricultural land owners, with the increase of weeds and pests that will spread to the urban areas.
CARNAGE LEADING TO STUNNINGLY EXORBITANT COSTS ( Web-Page )
The so-called cosmetic use of pesticides includes herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides.
Councillor Blight said the only option based on the province’s BAN would be TO USE AN UNTESTED REMEDY OF CONTROL or TO DO NOTHING AT ALL.
According to Councillor Blight ―
If we do nothing at all, THE WEEDS COULD SPREAD INTO LAND NEARBY, and COST THE LANDOWNERS MORE TO CONTROL THOSE PROBLEMS.

Province of Alberta
On August 9th, 2011, the Government of Alberta STOPPED THE TREND towards NEEDLESS, SENSELESS, and MALICIOUS PROHIBITION.
The Government of Alberta stated that it WOULD NOT CREATE RESTRICTIONS OR LAWS THAT CONFLICT WITH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, that is relied upon for health and safety assessments.
Consequently, the Government of Alberta indicated that had NO INTENT TO PROHIBIT THE SALE OF ANY PEST CONTROL PRODUCT.
Alberta monitored PESTICIDE BANS over the past few years and the approaches taken by other jurisdictions, and found THE BASIS FOR ACTION CONFUSING AND INCONSISTENT.

Province of British Columbia
On May 17th, 2012, British Columbia’s Special Committee on Cosmetic Pesticides STOPPED THE TREND towards NEEDLESS, SENSELESS, and MALICIOUS PROHIBITION.
The Special Committee announced that it WILL NOT RECOMMEND PROHIBITION against pest control products used in the Urban Landscape.
In jurisdictions outside of British Columbia, Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION led to CATASTROPHIC CARNAGE in the form of BUSINESS FAILURES, GARBAGE DUMP GREEN SPACES, STUNNINGLY EXORBITANT COSTS, HORRIFIC FINES, and even ILLNESS and DEATH.
Because of Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION, the owners, employees, and families dependent on Professional Lawn Care businesses have faced TERROR, DESPAIR, and DESTITUTION.
Pest control products are SCIENTIFICALLY SAFE, and NO HARM WILL OCCUR when they are used according to label directions.
Not surprisingly, the BC Special Committee on Cosmetic Pesticides AGREED ― and deserves CONGRATULATION.
