Water quality is the big issue here.

There’s a single-source aquifer for the whole island.

They felt that any pesticides would poison the water.  [ ?!?! ]

You know, it’s very hard with pesticides to say it isn’t.

It’s a difficult thing to say.

Pesticides have chemicals in them, and if the chemicals get into the water in certain concentrations, they can cause problems.

They haven’t been shown to do that.

Golf course superintendents use very small amounts of pesticides.

So generally, properly used, it’s virtually impossible to affect the ground-water, but « VIRTUALLY » is not a 100-per cent guarantee.

We had trouble with that argument because we could never say categorically that a pesticide would never get in the ground-water in quantities that would cause a problem.

We couldn’t absolutely guarantee that, so they didn’t want it.

He wants to ban pesticides, & hence, destroy the people who depend on them.

For pre-emergent weed control. I mean, that’s why pre-emergent weed control is in here, so that we can like kill everything in the world, reimagine weed control is, is something that SAVES our industry and the ag industry MILLIONS OF DOLLARS , so that’s why it’s there.

But you know, we have to do something about it.

It’s just, it was frustrating.

It’s hard to get, you know, people to really stay focused on that.

But we have turned it into a, WE’VE CONCENTRATED OUR HAND WEEDING ON PLAYING SURFACES AND LANDING AREAS .

And what we do, we’ve got it down to about, I mean, we don’t have a large pesticide number, but A LARGE PART OF OUR NUMBER is taken up in this  [ I.E. MANUAL WEED-PICKING ] , in this in this labor number, what I do is I flag out areas.

And just like you would expect they do if there’s a weed that are outside that line of the flags, it doesn’t get pulled out until the next time we move the flags.

I had a conversation with Jeff Carlson’s successor, Kevin Banks, who shed a bit more light on what actually happens at the club. 

–

Banks studied turfgrass management at University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and, prior to working at the Vineyard, was senior assistant at Nantucket Golf Club. 

–

In other words, he is a turfgrass expert who also wears many other hats ( i.e. budgeter, organizer, teacher, etc … ) as superintendent. 

–

Banks explained that « ORGANIC » management requires developing a comprehensive understanding of problems as they arise. 

–

As opposed to a traditional approach that relies on chemical products as quick and easy solutions, Banks and his team « ARE CONSTANTLY FEEDING THE PLANT » nitrogen and water in an attempt to grow it out of disease situations [ ?!?! ] , he told Golf Course Management in 2018. 

–

The underlying principle here is that THE HEALTHIER THE TURFGRASS, THE MORE HARDY IT BECOMES, and the less susceptible it is to disease and weed invasion.

Proper moisture and healthy soils are key, and Banks says that he’s seen MORE AND MORE SUCCESS EVERY YEAR.  [ I.E. FAILURE AFTER FAILURE YEAR AFTER YEAR ]

He’s noticed that the sod that’s been growing for five to eight years is in much better shape than any of the new stuff  —  proof that THE COURSE IS ADAPTING.  [ ?!?!?!?! ]

They’d do a great job.  [ ?!??! ]

The golf courses would be terrific, but they’d have some VISUAL BLEMISHES  [ I.E. AREAS THAT ARE UGLY & UNPLAYABLE GARBAGE DUMPS ] .

Well, right now they’d all be UNEMPLOYED  [ BECAUSE THEIR ORGANIC MAINTENANCE HAS FAILED ] .

Unless the golfer begins to have a CHANGE OF PERCEPTION and begins to ACCEPT THOSE BLEMISHES  [ I.E. UGLY & UNPLAYABLE GARBAGE DUMP CONDITIONS ] , and has that same mentality as when he goes to Saint Andrews or Hoylake, and ACCEPTS THOSE CONDITIONS [ I.E. UGLY & UNPLAYABLE GARBAGE DUMP CONDITIONS ] and finds them CHARMING [ ?!?! ] and has a great round of golf.

Then you can do it  [ … IF ULTRA-WEALTHY ELITE GOLFERS ARE WILLING TO SPEND MILLIONS & MILLIONS OF DOLLARS PER YEAR ] .

The professionals and the tours and golf’s hierarchy have to embrace that, too.

The guys who are driving the bus.

Actually, it is NOT the role of any superintendent to dictate EXPECTATIONS to golf-customers just because they are unable or unwilling to provide what paying-golfers demand  …  HIGH-QUALITY PLAYING CONDITIONS & AESTHETICS.

I HAVEN’T SEEN ANYTHING ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.

But I have some restrictions about how they  [ THE OWNERS ]  want me to use it.

And as I understand it, the COMPOST TEA people feel that this is a SILVER BULLET [ ?!?! ] that is just compost tea WILL DO EVERYTHING you need to have done [ ?!?! ] , as they’ve explained it to me.

I think they’re a product that could be part of a program.

But I think it has to be part of using some other things cultural practices, nitrogen, the COMPOST TEA plots that I did last year, next to the products that I put eco garden, stuff like that were way down in their fertility, clipping yield was down.

And it just seemed to me like they needed to be fed. 

–

They had MORE DOLLAR SPOT.  [ !!!! ]

The dollar spot was a little more pitted. 

–

I’m going to do it again this year.

That’s what I saw from last year so that that’s my own life.

I just wish they would kind of get off of that and just have it be part of a program.

Research has shown that increasing the frequency of light-weight rolling significantly decreases the incidence of Dollar Spot disease on creeping bentgrass.

Performing greens rolling five days per week, regardless of the time of day, will consistently resulted in lower disease incidence, as well as superior turfgrass quality ratings.

Research has also shown that light-weight rolling every other day will slightly reduced Anthracnose disease severity ( 5 to 6 per cent ) under moderate disease pressure on annual bluegrass.

Admittedly, the slight reduction in Anthracnose severity caused by rolling was

subtle & probably would be difficult to perceive on the golf course.
