Manitoba residents wanted prohibition to end because they were frustrated over being forced to use green alternative pesticides that were too expensive & not effective.

Manitoba’s garbage dump green spaces were directly caused by prohibition.

Herbicides needed to be reinstated to get rid of weeds such as dandelions in the most prominent parks & boulevards.

~

Weeds also needed to be effectively controlled to protect allergy sufferers from weed pollen.

Manitoba’s harmful-prohibition had forced Manitobans to use ineffective green alternatives like Fiesta herbicide in much higher quantities to have any effect  ―  causing more potential environmental hazards.

Fortunately, it will be legal once again for Manitobans to use so-called cosmetic pesticides on their lawns.

It’s ok to treat lawns for damaging pests in Manitoba again.

Literature Review  ―

~

~

The radical Manitoba NDP government argued that a literature review of 140 medical studies by Ontario College of Family Physicians ( OCFP ) offered plenty of evidence indicating that prohibition was needed  [ ?!?? ] .

~

OCFP’s evidence provided an assessment that was somewhat valueless, inconclusive, tenuous, & discredited. 

~

The literature review by OCFP was a hate-assessment against Health-Canada-approved pesticides. 

~

Manitobans do not want any #@!!% literature review nonsense !

Green Alternatives  ―

~

In order to validate prohibition, Manitoba’s previous NDP government had been spreading fake-news & false-science into the public discussion, with exaggerations that a single application of Fiesta herbicide, an inferior green alternative herbicide, can successfully replace conventional products such as Killex & Par III. 

~

Predictably, Manitoba’s prohibition has forced residents & professionals to rely upon phony, inferior, ineffective, & unaffordable green alternative pesticides like Fiesta herbicide.

~

The vast majority of Fiesta users overwhelmingly condemn it.

~

Unfortunately, it is impossible to keep Manitoba’s urban environment well-maintained, safe, & attractive by using pesticide-free programs consisting of  alternative pesticides & practices only. 

~

In fact, green alternative pesticides, like Fiesta herbicide, have cost 10 to 15 times more than conventional products, in addition to being so ineffective that undesirable repetitious applications have been required.

Before Manitoba’s prohibition, conventional herbicides used to work quite well for controlling dandelions since they affected both top-growth & root-growth.

By contrast, green alternative pesticides only affect top-growth.

With the reversal of prohibition, Fiesta will inevitably become a bad memory, & all pesticides sold & used in Manitoba will simply be aligned with federal regulations & rigorous Health Canada assessments.

Alternative practices, like manual weed picking, are also not effective to combat weed infestations.

In spring 2023, the gardening season had started, and Manitobans have more options to deal with weeds.

In November 2022, the provincial government  LIFTED  the ban on cosmetic pesticides, which had been in place since 2014.

Mr David Hinton, owner of Weed Man Manitoba, now has more tools in his toolbox  ―

For the last seven years, we’ve only been able to use one product, called Fiesta.

Now, it’s still available of course, and we’re still using it, but we have more traditional products available to us.

Mr Hinton says those traditional products  ―  such as Killex and Par III  ―  are  10 TO 15 TIMES CHEAPER  to use  ―

The bio weed controls we’ve had to use for the last seven years are  EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE .

In the early 2000s, the city of Winnipeg began  REDUCING  its cosmetic pesticide use on boulevards and parks.

By 2014, Winnipeg had essentially no cosmetic spray program by the time the province-wide  PROHIBITION  against cosmetic pesticides was  IMPOSED  by Manitoba’s  [ RADICAL ]  NDP government.

By November 2022, the use of pesticides was  ALLOWED  on many more private lawns and green spaces, but not within 15 metres of a playground, picnic area, or within a dog park.

It’s a  SEA OF YELLOW  ―  and then white  ―  popping up across Winnipeg boulevards and parks.

Winnipeg’s dandelions have arguably become  STEADILY WORSE  since the province banned  [ IE PROHIBITED ]  herbicides for cosmetic purposes five years ago.

Several local parks are now  MORE DANDELION THAN GRASS . 

~

Emily Bielik-Cran said she enjoys taking care of her front lawn, but when it comes to mowing the grass beside her house, and the dandelions that come with it, it’s a hassle.

According to Bielik-Cran  ―

We never used to have these dandelions here  …

…  they are getting worse each year.

~

I was telling my husband we have to get our own poison because it’s going to come onto our lawn. 

~

In 2014, the  [ RADICAL ]  Manitoba NDP government  PROHIBITED  against  [ SO-CALLED ]  cosmetic pesticides used to fight weeds like dandelions. 

~

But on the campaign trail in 2016, the Progressive Conservatives promised to launch a  REVIEW  of that legislation  [ IE PROHIBITION ] .

However, the results are not yet in.

~

The provincial government declined an on-camera interview, but provided Global News with this statement  ―

~

The government is committed to legislation that balances safe, useable, and aesthetic green spaces while protecting human health and the environment. 

~

The regulation of cosmetic pesticides is under  REVIEW  to determine whether or not any amendments are necessary to achieve those legislative objectives. 

~

It’s similar to a statement provided to Global News about the issue in May 2018.

~

Most of the eco-friendly products  [ AKA GREEN ALTERNATIVE PESTICIDES ]  around now burn the leaves off the dandelion, but do not get deep enough to the root to kill the entire plant, said one Winnipeg expert.

According to Ken Land at St Mary’s Nursery & Garden Centre  ―

Since the ban went in place, the older products  [ AKA CONVENTIONAL PESTICIDES ]  used to work quite well for controlling dandelions and they would kill the root of the plant.

The newer products  [ AKA GREEN ALTERNATIVE PESTICIDES ]  are top-growth control.

The province said it continues to have discussions with various parties and that any modifications to the ban  [ IE PROHIBITION ]  would be carefully considered.​

Winnipegger Jeannette Delorme  SPENDS HOURS  digging up the weeds on her St Vital property every spring and fall, filling entire buckets with dandelions.

According to Delorme  ―

They’ll come and there’s no way you can eradicate it.

Absolutely no way.

~

Delorme installed a rock garden over her front lawn to help keep the weeds off of her property, but on May 28th, 2018, she was still out with tools making sure all of the dandelions were gone.

The Manitoba Conservative government has passed legislation  AMENDING  the Environment Act  TO GIVE MANITOBANS THE CHOICE TO BE ABLE TO PURCHASE AND USE COSMETIC PESTICIDES ON THEIR LAWNS THAT ARE ALREADY REGISTERED WITH HEALTH CANADA  and, out of an abundance of caution, the list of  SENSITIVE AREAS  that would be  PROTECTED  from the application of these products has been  EXPANDED , Environment, Climate, and Parks Minister Jeff Wharton announced today.

According to Minister Wharton  ― 

~

Our government is committed to  PROTECTING  the environment and we  RELY ON SCIENCE  to inform the proper use of cosmetic pesticides. 

~

We recognize Health Canada as the  FOREMOST EXPERT  in this field to evaluate pesticides used in Manitoba. 

~

Pesticides  REGISTERED  with Health Canada go through a  RIGOROUS REVIEW PROCESS  that assesses the risk of pesticides to human health, animal health, and the environment, and must meet  STRICT HEALTH AND SAFETY MEASURES . 

~

Manitoba will continue to   RELY ON HEALTH CANADA  to evaluate pesticide products, and all pesticides sold and used in Manitoba must be  FEDERALLY-REGISTERED  under the Pest Control Products Act. 

~

Manitoba still has the  STRICTEST PESTICIDE REGULATIONS  among the Prairie provinces by  PROHIBITING  cosmetic pesticide use in  SENSITIVE AREAS , the minister noted.

According to Minister Wharton  ― 

~

By expanding the list of  SENSITIVE AREAS , our government continues to  PROTECT CHILDREN AND PETS , while keeping communities safe and minimizing environmental impact. 

~

These  PROTECTED AREAS  include schools, hospitals, child-care centres, provincial parks, designated municipal picnic areas, playgrounds, and dog parks. 

~

To understand better the experience of Manitobans with previous cosmetic pesticide restrictions, which were put in place in 2015, the Manitoba government launched a  PUBLIC CONSULTATION . 

~

More than 60 per cent of respondents indicated restrictions on the sale and usage of pesticides for cosmetic use were  TOO STRICT , and over 70 per cent of respondents  WANTED RESTRICTIONS REDUCED OR RESCINDED .

~

Municipalities have reported the previous approach  ADDED UNNECESSARY COSTS  because of  REPEATED APPLICATIONS . 

~

Municipalities and other stake-holders asked for  GREATER FLEXIBILITY  to have  USEABLE AESTHETIC GREEN SPACES  in communities, noted Wharton. 

~

The legislation  ALLOWS  the use of all Health-Canada-REGISTERED  cosmetic pesticides in  LOW-RISK AREAS  like boulevards, sidewalks, right-of-ways, and fairgrounds. 

~

Manitobans will also have the ability to apply all pesticides  REGISTERED  with Health Canada on their lawns.

The Association of Manitoba Municipalities welcomes the Manitoba government’s decision to  ALIGN  with federal regulations and  RIGOROUS REVIEW PROCESSES  at Health Canada.

These legislative changes will  ALLOW  municipalities to  EFFECTIVELY MANAGE  weed control programs while  MITIGATING FINANCIAL PRESSURES  on municipal budgets.

Manitoba needs to follow good science and not give into ideological environmentalists who value knee-jerk emotionalism over positive outcomes.

Case in point is the province’s  SENSIBLE DECISION  to  LIFT THE BAN  [ IE RESCIND PROHIBITION ] , at least partially, on cosmetic pesticides passed by the previous  [ RADICAL ]  NDP government back in 2014.     

~

Cosmetic pesticides are pesticides used to control weeds and make private lawns and grassy areas visually appealing. 

~

The current Conservative government  INTENDED TO LIFT THE BAN  on cosmetic pesticides on private lawns and some other designated municipal parks and fields. 

~

Its bill would have continued to ban pesticides around schools, child-care centres, hospitals, municipal playgrounds, and provincial parks. 

~

The  [ RADICAL ]  opposition NDP used its legislative privileges to delay the bill until the fall session as they are permitted to do so for a handful of bills. 

~

However, one wonders why the  [ RADICAL ]  opposition NDP would not meet the government half-way given that the government’s bill was a compromise. 

~

So, from a  [ RADICAL ]  opposition NDP perspective, they would still be receiving significant concessions from the government for their side. 

~

On the areas where the ban would be lifted, there is still a requirement that pesticides would have to be chemical products  APPROVED  by Health Canada. 

~

Thus, there is a safeguard to ensure any chemicals would be  APPROVED  by Canada’s main health regulator to  PROTECT  health and environment. 

~

Why is the  [ RADICAL ]  opposition NDP  NOT TRUSTING  the scientists and regulators at Health Canada ?  

~

Doubtless, they trust them in many other areas when it comes to health of Canadians.

So, why is the  [ RADICAL ]  opposition NDP willing to die on this hill ?
