Overview
Golf Courses Will Re-Open In
The Era Of The Chinese ⁄ Wuhan
Coronavirus Pandemic
Opening Golf Courses Will Be A
Great Morale Booster For Society
The Chinese ⁄ Wuhan Coronavirus pandemic will change the way we look at the game of golf. There are choppy times ahead, but the game of golf is expected to emerge stronger and more appreciated than ever. Playing golf with friends, with its relatively small number of interactions, will be a perfect stepping stone for getting back to regular life. Golf will rise again and will hopefully become an incredible part of our lives. Golf course facilities will be creating POSITIVE WAVES for our society by introducing preventive measures to reduce the chances of infection. And, as usual, golf courses will continue to provide high-quality playing conditions and aesthetics. Opening golf courses will be a great morale booster for society.
Golf course maintenance staff is considered essential, and must observe strict physical distancing rules while they prepare the golf course for a new season. Golf should be among the first wave of activities allowed to resume during the pandemic. Golfers should expect new rules for physical distancing when they return to the courses.
Sunlight is a sanitizer found in abundance on golf courses. The Chinese ⁄ Wuhan Coronavirus will weaken more quickly when exposed to sunlight, heat, and humidity. This means that the pandemic will become less contagious during the summer months. It also means that golf courses will be the safest places to be in The Era Of The Chinese ⁄ Wuhan Coronavirus pandemic. And, because sunlight is such a great sanitizer, golfers should NOT be afraid to touch flagpoles and sand-trap rakes. Golfers are safe on the golf course, although physical distancing may continue to be necessary. See later segments for more details.
Finally, let us curse many of the golf industry’s trade associations for supporting the closing of golf courses because of the Chinese ⁄ Wuhan Coronavirus pandemic. During the pandemic, Golf Canada, Canadian Golf Superintendents Association ( CGSA ), National Golf Course Owners Association ( NGCOA of Canada ), Professional Golf Association of BC ( PGA of BC ), and others, have lobbied to rob golfers the freedom to safely practice the game of golf. These trade associations have used the perverted logic that older golfers are considered more vulnerable to the pandemic, and therefore, golf courses must be closed to the vast majority of younger players. They have betrayed the golf industry !

British Columbia Supports Golf Industry
During The Chinese ⁄ Wuhan Coronavirus
Pandemic, Of All The Golf Courses In Canada,
Only Around 100 Of Them Are Still Open, &
All Of Them Are Located In British Columbia
In a world where strict lock-downs and physical distancing have become par for the course, many BC golfers are STILL ENJOYING some tee time.
Of the roughly 2300 golf courses in Canada, only around 100 of them are still OPEN.
All of them are believed to be in BC.
The reaction to these golf courses remaining OPEN has been MIXED.
While some health officials ADVISE AGAINST IT, golfers in BC are THRILLED to have an outlet during the pandemic.
Mr Tom Monaghan, president of the Monaghan Golf Group, told CTV News that he’s seen an « overwhelming positive reaction » ―
I mean, you can imagine you’ve been cooped up in your house for a month.
People just want things to do.

Western Canada Turfgrass Association ( WCTA )
British Columbia & Prairies Provinces
An Overwhelming Number Of Superintendents
Support The Opening Of Golf Courses During
The Chinese ⁄ Wuhan Coronavirus Pandemic
There have also been questions about the WCTA’s position on the opening of golf courses and sports fields during the COVID-19 [ i.e. the Chinese ⁄ Wuhan Coronavirus ] outbreak.
In response, WCTA has issued a statement that states its primary concern is the health and safety of our members.
WCTA has recognized and has supported government authority in this matter, understanding that as the situation changes, the one constant is that we all must adhere to orders / mandates from Provincial Health Offices and regional health authorities, along with other authorities such as Health Canada.
Whether or not a golf facility has been mandated to close, or has the option to remain open, WCTA wants to stress that everyone must follow safe practices to ensure the health and safety of all those in the work-force and in the community.
Nonetheless, according to a survey performed by WCTA, a VAST OVERWHELMING NUMBER of golf superintendents SUPPORT the opening of golf courses during the COVID-19 [ i.e. the Chinese ⁄ Wuhan Coronavirus ] outbreak.

Have Been Removed From Sand Traps
Club owners are adamant that they’re FOLLOWING THE RULES to prevent contamination and a COVID-19 [ i.e. the Chinese ⁄ Wuhan Coronavirus ] outbreak.
At Shadow Ridge Golf Club in Kelowna, BC, which REOPENED this week, efforts to LIMIT CONTACT are in full force.
The PRO SHOP IS CLOSED, players have been told NOT TO TOUCH THE FLAGPOLES, and staff have REMOVED THE RAKES from sand traps. [ See Background Information below. ]
They have also reminded players to observe physical distancing.
One golfer, Clay Atkinson, told CTV News that there have been some close calls ―
There was a few times someone would kind of start walking to you.
And you’d have to put your club up and point it at them and say « stop » or « stay away ».
Many provinces are simply NOT ALLOWING COURSES TO OPEN, in keeping with the cancellation of non-essential businesses.

Golfers Must Arrive No Earlier Than Twenty
Minutes Before Tee Time, & Must Leave
Immediately After Their Game Finishes
While much of the actual playing of golf will remain the same, many of the social norms and pre-and-post-game rituals are vastly different for golfers, according to Mr Ian Robertson a manager at Kelowna Springs Golf Club.
According to Mr Robertson ―
It’s really quite exhaustive the steps we have taken to keep golfers and staff safe.
We have reduced capacity by about 25 per cent by just spreading out the tee times that much more and there is an abundance of signage everywhere.
Other measures include closing clubhouse restaurants, putting greens and hitting nets, asking golfers to arrive NO EARLIER THAN 20 MINUTES before their tee time, limiting the number of people who can be in the pro shop at the same time, and asking golfers to LEAVE IMMEDIATELY after their game finishes.

Opening Golf Courses Will Be A
Big Morale Booster For Society
Mr Ty McCullough, a college student from Hamilton, Ontario, started a petition aimed at convincing Ontario to GET THE GOLF BALL ROLLING AGAIN ―
Right now, with all of our work being closed, if golf was open I know there’d be a ton of people … up there every day if they ( could ).
I really think it’d be a REALLY BIG MORALE BOOSTER.
So far, the petition has more than 4,000 signatures.
But as of yet, there is no sign that Ontario golfers will be stepping back onto the green to practice their swing any time soon.

CURSING THE TRADE ASSOCIATIONS
Trade Associations Have Robbed Golfers The
Freedom To Safely Practice The Game Of Golf
April 22nd, 2020
Re : The Chinese ⁄ Wuhan Coronavirus ( COVID-19 )
Let us #@!!% CURSE many of the golf industry’s trade associations for supporting the CLOSING of golf courses because of the Chinese ⁄ Wuhan Coronavirus pandemic.
BC golf courses have REMAINED OPEN against the wishes of the trade associations.
These failed trade associations are run by fanatжcal and uneducated leaders who fail to make any correct decisions.
They must be STOPPED.
Observers have repeatedly warned these leaders to STOP supporting anti-pesticide prohibition, to STOP validating those lunatжcs who seek to harm the turf maintenance profession, and to STOP peddling bogus green alternative pesticides.
And, they being asked to STOP supporting CLOSURES because of the Chinese ⁄ Wuhan Coronavirus pandemic.
Thankfully, associations like Western Canada Turfgrass Association ( WCTA ) have NOT been supporting CLOSURES.
According to WCTA, whether or not a golf facility has been mandated to close or has the option to remain open, WCTA stresses that everyone MUST FOLLOW SAFE PRACTICES to ensure the health and safety of all those in our workforce and in our communities.
Perhaps we should NOT ascribe malice to association leaders for their failures, which can adequately be explained by incompetence.
Nonetheless, the end may be near for golf superintendents and their facilities !

New York Golf Courses Can Reopen With Coronavirus Restrictions
UPDATE – New York State Supports The Golf Industry
Physical Distancing
Golf courses have been in a GRAY AREA since New York State SHUT DOWN non-essential businesses last month.
At first, some were open and bustling on nice days, finding ways to ENCOURAGE SOCIAL DISTANCING [ i.e. PHYSICAL DISTANCING ], while others were FULLY SHUTTERED [ i.e. CLOSED ], with no way of making that possible.
Background Information
GOLF COURSES ARE SAFE !
Golfers are SAFE on the golf course, although PHYSICAL DISTANCING may continue to be necessary. However, because sunlight is such a GREAT SANITIZER, golfers should NOT be afraid to touch flagpoles and sand-trap rakes. See later segments for more details.
UPDATE – New York State Supports The Golf Industry
Proposed Shut-Down
Then, [ golf-hating ] Governor Andrew Cuomo, on April 9th, 2020, added GOLF COURSES to the list of non-essential businesses, SHUTTING THEM DOWN.
The governor’s top aide, Melissa DeRosa, said playing golf was « counter to the message » the state was trying to send regarding everyone staying home and obeying SOCIAL DISTANCING.
UPDATE – New York State Supports The Golf Industry
Allowed To Remain Open
After what surely was a lot of pleading from one of the many seasonal industries being CRUSHED by the [ Chinese ⁄ Wuhan ] Coronavirus pandemic, the state altered its guidance on April 17th, 2020, by saying that GOLF COURSES COULD REMAIN OPEN ― with some restrictions.
UPDATE – New York State Supports The Golf Industry
Non-Essential
According to the guidelines set forth by the Empire State Development, the state authority in charge of determining essential and non-essential businesses, golf courses are still considered NON-ESSENTIAL, so they are not allowed to have any employees working.
But they can use « essential services, such as GROUNDS-KEEPING to avoid hazardous conditions; and SECURITY, provided by employees, contractors, or vendors ».
UPDATE – New York State Supports The Golf Industry
Operations
For a golf course with daily greens fees, this likely means the fee would have to be paid on-line.
It’s hard to think that a « security » guard or greens-keeper could ostensibly be considered a sales clerk.
For private courses, the rule says they « may permit individuals access to the property so long as there are no gatherings of any kind and appropriate SOCIAL DISTANCING of six feet between individuals is strictly abided ».
The presumption there would be that the « security » enforces those rules.
A lot of public golf courses are either owned by the state ― like the five courses at Bethpage Park on Long Island, including the famed Black Course ― or by individual townships.
The state rules also said that « parks and other open public spaces » are open, « except playgrounds and other areas of congregation where SOCIAL DISTANCING cannot be abided ».
These sneaky golfers have got some balls during [ the Chinese ⁄ Wuhan ] Coronavirus lock-down.
Golf courses tried to stay open early on by doing things like raising cups an inch or two out of the ground, or placing styrofoam inside the cup, so the ball doesn’t go all the way down.
This way, the FLAGSTICK can stay in and doesn’t have to be touched. [ See Background Information below. ]
The use of motorized golf cars were also stopped, as were caddies.
So golfers either carrying their own bags or using wheeled push-carts were allowed, and it was possible to maintain SOCIAL DISTANCING rules and still play.
That is NOW POSSIBLE yet again, and the rules must be strictly followed in order to keep golf courses open.

UPDATE – Sunlight Is A Sanitizer
Dying Quickest
The [ Chinese ⁄ Wuhan ] Coronavirus appears to WEAKEN more quickly when EXPOSED TO SUNLIGHT, HEAT, AND HUMIDITY, a US official said in a potential sign that THE PANDEMIC COULD BECOME LESS CONTAGIOUS IN SUMMER MONTHS.
US government researchers have determined that the virus survives best indoors and in dry conditions, and loses potency when temperatures and humidity rise ― and especially when it is exposed to sunlight, said Mr William Bryan, acting head of the US Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate.
According to Mr Bryan ―
The virus DIES QUICKEST in the presence of DIRECT SUNLIGHT.
UPDATE – Sunlight Is A Sanitizer
Half-Life
In a high-humidity environment, that half-life dropped to six hours, and when the virus was exposed to HIGH HUMIDITY AND SUNLIGHT, the HALF-LIFE dropped to 2 MINUTES, Mr Bryan said.
Researchers found a similar effect with the [ Chinese ⁄ Wuhan ] Coronavirus that was suspended in the air ― simulating the coughing or sneezing that often spreads the disease.
In a dark room, the virus maintained HALF its strength for 1 hour.
But when EXPOSED TO SUNLIGHT, it lost HALF its strength in 90 SECONDS, Mr Bryan said.
UPDATE – Sunlight Is A Sanitizer
Less Contagious
The findings could bolster hopes that the [ Chinese ⁄ Wuhan ] Coronavirus will mimic the behavior of other respiratory diseases like influenza, which typically are LESS CONTAGIOUS IN WARM WEATHER.
But the [ Chinese ⁄ Wuhan ] Coronavirus has also proven lethal in warm-weather places like Singapore, raising broader questions about the impact of environmental factors.
President Donald Trump said the findings should be interpreted cautiously.
According to President Trump ―
I hope people enjoy the sun and if it has an impact, that’s great.
UPDATE – Sunlight Is A Sanitizer
Surfaces
On non-porous SURFACES like stainless steel, the virus takes 18 hours to lose half its strength in a dark, low-humidity environment, Mr Bryan said.

Return To The Links
Golfers can start RETURNING TO THE LINKS under the revised stay at home order issued by Governor Gretchen Whitmer on April 24th, 2020.
According to the Governor, golfing is allowed as long as it is « consistent with sound social distancing ».
Golf cars are not permitted yet.
On April 24th, 2020, Governor Whitmer said that if people want to golf at this time, they need to be mindful to not spread the [ Chinese ⁄ Wuhan ] Coronavirus.
Governor Whitmer said golf cars are not allowed and people still need to keep six feet away from others while engaging in outdoor activities, per the CDC guidelines.
According to Governor Whitmer ―
Please stay safe and do everything you can to protect yourself and others.
I know there’s been a lot of discussion about these restrictions.
I know they haven’t been easy and they seemed inconsistent or confusing, but the data shows that what we have done is working.
As of April 23rd, 2020, the state of Michigan reported 35,291 cases of COVID-19 [ i.e. the Chinese ⁄ Wuhan Coronavirus ], and 2,977 people have died from the virus.
On April 24th, 2020, the stay-at-home order was extended until May 15th, but some of the previous restrictions were EASED including lawn care and motor boating.
People are also required to wear a mask when they are in an enclosed public space, such as a grocery store, Governor Whimter said.
