DeLand Golf Club ( Florida )
DeLand is the county seat of Volusia County, Florida, with a population of almost 25,000.
A group of forty-two Enviro-Lunatic home-owners filed a class action lawsuit against the DeLand Golf Course over alleged ground water pollution.
The well water at the homes is contaminated with a so-called cancer-causing pest control product called dieldrin.
Home-owners in the Country Club Estates neighbourhood sued the golf course and the manufacturer for ten million dollars in damages.
Infamous advocate Erin Brockovich and her legal entourage were hired by the home-owners, but she later withdrew from the case.
The lawsuit claims the golf course used the now-unavailable pest control product in the 1970s.
In fact, it is far more likely that the home-owners themselves were responsible for the MOST RECENT USE of dieldrin as a preventive application against termites on the foundations of their homes, most of which were built in the 1980s.
In 1987, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency removed dieldrin from all uses, including as a termite treatment.
Several homes in the neighbourhood tested positive for the chemical at levels in PARTS PER TRILLION.
The home-owners are concerned the positive tests will significantly lower their property values and make it harder to sell their homes.
Dieldrin was developed in the 1940s as an alternative to DDT, and proved to be a highly effective insecticide that was very widely used from the 1950s to the early 1970s.
The presence of dieldrin in those regions where it has never been used raised concerns about the inability to control the movement of this persistent chemical in the environment.
Registered uses of dieldrin were very limited after the mid-1970s, and it was entirely discontinued by the early 1990s.
The last known manufacturer of dieldrin, Shell International Chemical Co. ( United Kingdom ), ceased its production in 1989.
Observers point out that the mere ability to measure or detect the presence of a pest control ingredient in the environment is NOT an indication that the substance poses any health risk, especially at the trace levels at which we can now detect them, which is in parts per trillion.
