The Imminent Demise of Langara Golf Course
The City of Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation is proposing that half or all of one of its Golf Facilities be SHUT DOWN to make room for park space.
LANGARA GOLF COURSE is a Municipal 18-Hole 86-Year-Old Golf Facility owned and operated by City of Vancouver in British Columbia.
Vancouver is looking to TRANSFORM PUTTING GREENS INTO GREEN SPACE ( a.k.a. demise and destruction of the Golf Facility ), as the park board debates transforming the oldest city-owned Golf Facility into a public park.
In what he calls « a very cautious first step », Aaron Jasper, Vancouver Park Commissioner with the Vision Party, will INTRODUCE A MOTION asking staff to « compile and report back usage and revenue metrics » for Langara Golf Course.
If the evaluation determines A GOLF FACILITY IS NOT THE BEST USE FOR THE LAND, the City of Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation could move TO REPLACE EITHER SOME OR ALL of the 48.6-hectare Golf Facility with public park space, Mr. Jasper said.
According to Commissioner Jasper ―
We know that’s a part of the city that’s going to see a lot of growth, a lot of density.
Instead of just looking at the next two, three, five, ten years, let’s look beyond that, in terms of what opportunities we are going to have TO PROVIDE QUALITY GREEN SPACE, park space, for that part of the city.
Jasper stressed the board has no interest in selling the Golf Facility for condominium development.
The city depends primarily on TWO methods to acquire park space ―
● buying up lots adjacent to existing park space under a land-acquisition program, or
● negotiating public amenities packages with developments, such as Olympic Village.
Langara Golf Course is one of three 18-hole golf courses owned and operated by the City of Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, along with Fraserview and McCleery.
The net revenue for all three Golf Facilities is only about ONE-MILLION-DOLLARS PER YEAR, Mr. Jasper said.
Should the plan go through, the Golf Facility could be partially or entirely replaced with a « passive park » comparable to Queen Elizabeth Park, or an « active park » composed of playing fields.
A golfing area could potentially be reduced as an executive nine-hole course, or COMPLETELY ANNIHILATED.
City Officials are expected to present the report in Fall 2012.
If approved, the transformation ( a.k.a. demise and destruction of the Golf Facility ) would take between five and ten years.
Langara Golf Course, located on the south slope of Vancouver, is popular with families in large part due to its affordability.
A round of golf costs between 50 to 56 dollars for adults, depending on the day; children and seniors get a discounted rate of 35.25 dollars from Monday to Thursday.
Park Commissioner Melissa De Genova said the pricing makes accessible to seniors and children « a sport that’s always been considered elitist ».
She is supportive of improving the Golf Facility ― looking at bettering amenities such as the club house, for instance ― but concerned about its full or partial closing.
« Become smaller ? Nobody would come … if they play golf », said Yoobok Kwon, who has golfed at Langara Golf Course for 15 years.
« You cannot make it smaller than this. »
Langara Golf Course Is DOOMED !
Golf Facilities like Langara Golf Course are not even considered as LEGITIMATE Green Spaces, and are considered ACCESSIBLE MOSTLY TO THE RICH ELITE.
In 2004, Langara Golf Course EXPENDED LARGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY AND RESOURCES to have itself designated as a CERTIFIED AUDUBON COOPERATIVE SANCTUARY.
