Senator Don Plett, a former Conservative Party President, picked up on a FLIPPANT REMARK FROM ONE ENVIRONMENTALIST who said he would accept money « from Martians » if it helped preserve British Columbia’s pristine coast.
According to Senator Plett, on March 13th, 2012 ―

According to the Toronto Sun Newspaper ―
Should UNIONS OR CHARITIES be able to spend millions of dollars on POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS ?
Right now, there’s a fight over whether those unions and charities should BE FORCED TO BE OPEN AND ACCOUNTABLE to the public about such spending.
Unions spend millions of dollars collected from the dues of their members to engage in POLITICAL LOBBYING.
Quite often those unions tell their members little about this spending.
Many times, unions engage in POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS, and always on one side, THE LEFT, and their members have NO SAY.
Bill C-377, from Conservative Member of Parliament Russ Heibert, would require unions to tell their members and the public HOW THEY SPEND THAT TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DUES MONEY, including detailing what is spent on POLITICAL ISSUES.
Given the special tax status afforded to union dues, this only seems fair, but the union bosses hate this idea — THEY WANT TO BE ABLE TO OPERATE WITHOUT ANY SCRUTINY.
They want to make sure this crazy idea of openness doesn’t lead to more upset members.
Essentially, they are saying « give us special treatment so that the tax-payers can pay for our politics ».
That’s close to the SAME MESSAGE coming from DAVID SUZUKI FOUNDATION.
Suzuki has been an activist for years, and yet, the foundation in his name has CHARITABLE STATUS.
Why should Suzuki get special treatment ?
Right now there is a bit of an inquiry into the foreign funding of Canadian charities like Suzuki’s, and he ain’t happy about it.
Maybe he’s worried Canadians won’t like him TAKING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS over the last few years from FOREIGN SOURCES to fight for Canadian issues.
The same man who was fund-raising during Christmas 2011 by SCARING CHILDREN that the North Pole was melting, and that Santa would be homeless, is now calling for senators to have a « rational discussion of issues ».
Like the union bosses, Suzuki wants TO AVOID SCRUTINY.
But if there is one thing our charitable sector could use more of it is SCRUTINY.
There is a charity in Vancouver called Tides Canada Foundation that is a branch plant operation of Tides Foundation USA.
Both act as clearing houses for funding left-wing political causes. If that’s what they want to do, great, but why should they get special treatment.
In at least one instance, the Vancouver address for Tides USA, as reported to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service by the Hewlett Foundation, was EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE ADDRESS of David Suzuki Foundation.
According to its own web-site and those of its partner’s, Tides Canada collects money and hands out tax receipts for groups that are not even charities.
Openmedia.ca, an online advocacy group, tells donors if they want a tax receipt to fund the political web-site, then donations should go through Tides Canada.
On the web-site of Tides, they list several funds you can donate to including a fund for PeTA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
Does it seem right that they issue tax receipts for activists who throw paint on fur coats or produce posters comparing meat eaters to Nazis as they recently did ?
We need more openness and accountability from our unions and « charities » — not less.
