In 2009, with the SUPPORT OF TORONTO MASTER GARDENERS, Ontario's Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION was RECKLESSLY IMPOSED under the FALSE PRETEXT that so-called safe and effective Green Alternative Pesticides were/are already available to replace conventional pest control products. [ Wrong ! ]
Government Officials, the Green Space Industry, and the public were DUPED by Anti-Pesticide Lunatics like TORONTO MASTER GARDENERS.

The heavy hand of Big Brother is now reaching right into our gardens.
The following e-mail recently went out to the 80 or so women and men who belong to the ONTARIO MASTER GARDENERS 3 ―
It is ILLEGAL TO RECOMMEND HOME-MADE REMEDIES FOR PEST CONTROL.
A MASTER GARDENER 4 in Ontario may NOT write, advise, or recommend to anybody that they use Neem Oil, Soap, Alcohol, Baking Soda, Ketchup or any other concoction that worked for Grandma. [ The VAST MAJORITY NEVER WORKED to begin with. ]
Anything we recommend has to be APPROVED by the government as a pesticide.
The caps are theirs, not mine.
Presumably, a similar edict has been sent to other MASTER GARDENERS 5 across the province.
But c'mon.
Are the PESTICIDE POLICE [ a.k.a. Health Canada ] really going to PROSECUTE me for giving people advice about such things ?
[ Yes. They WILL be PROSECUTED and FINED for VIOLATING FEDERAL LAW. ]
If the answer is yes, then I say : « bollocks ».
[ « Bollocks » is a word of Anglo-Saxon origin, meaning « testicles ». ]
This GOVERNMENT RULING ( which appears to have its origins in the Ontario Pesticide Act [ Wrong ! ] ) is just another example of bureaucracy gone mad.
[ Wrong ! This is NOT a GOVERNMENT RULING, it is based on FEDERAL LAW. ]
Many of these so-called « home remedies » ( the sniffy term the Ministry of the Environment uses to describe simple gardening tips
[ ?!?! ] ) have been around for years.
They were used by our grand-parents.
And they work.
[ Wrong ! Overall, HOME-MADE PEST CONTROL CONCOCTION DO NOT WORK AND MAY BE DANGEROUS. ]
If — as the edict [ federal law ] implies ― there is something terribly dangerous about resorting to these measures in our gardens now, let's hear what they are.
Before taking this Draconian directive seriously, I want proof that they have actually caused harm to someone or something.
[ It must be pointed out that Sonia « Bollocks » Day herself has NO recognized training, background, or education in matters concerning pest control products. It is ABHORRENT that « Bollocks» would even recommend products like NEEM OIL. NEEM OIL is reportedly responsible for the DEATH of a one-and-a-half-year-old CHILD. DOESN'T ANYONE AT MASTER GARDENERS CARE ABOUT CHILDREN ! ]
The powers-that-be who dreamed up this absurd law should be aware, too, that MASTER GARDENERS 6 are thoughtful, intelligent, well-informed folks, who undergo extensive training before assuming their role of educating the public about gardening.
[ NOT A SINGLE PERSON within TORONTO MASTER GARDENERS has ANY recognized expertise, training or background in matters concerning pest control products. This organization is a MERE GARDEN CLUB, and it is NOT a science and NOT an education organization. ]
To become a MASTER GARDENER 7, you must first slog through two years of intensive horticulture correspondence courses from the University of Guelph ( I know. I did it 20 years ago ), then agree to keep learning more at monthly meetings.
[ What « Bollocks » is saying is that she possesses a limited amount of knowledge that has been OUT-OF-DATE for TWENTY YEARS. ]
We acquire a wealth of useful knowledge — which we're happy to pass on to others for free.
( MASTER GARDENERS 8 are all volunteers ).
[ Sonia « Bollocks » Day RIDICULOUSLY IMPLIES that MASTER GARDENERS are somehow more knowledgeable the that hundreds of scientists and experts at Health Canada who SCIENTIFICALLY ASSESS pest control products. Only Health Canada has the ESSENTIAL EXPERTISE on matters concerning pest control products, and CERTAINLY NOT MASTER GARDENERS. ]
We are not a bunch of brainless ninnies who advocate taking damaging or dangerous steps to get rid of pests and diseases in the garden.

Denying people access to what we know is ludicrous.

Especially nowadays, when there's a real thirst for information about practical alternatives to conventional pesticides.
[ Green Alternative Pesticides are INEFFECTIVE, INADEQUATE, HIGH-RISK, MORE TOXIC, STUNNINGLY EXPENSIVE, and OVERWHELMINGLY CONDEMNED. Green Alternatives DO NOT WORK ! It is WRONGLY ASSUMED THAT ALTERNATIVES are somehow safer and work as well as conventional products. By definition, ALTERNATIVES ARE INFERIOR, which is why they did not win the market-place originally. WE ARE VERY DISTRESSED that you are under the impression that TORONTO MASTER GARDENERS are proponents of illegal pesticides.

The good health of our gardens and our communities is very important to us.
It is for two reasons that we have supported the April 2009 Ontario Pesticide Ban since its inception, including the statement in Regulation 63/09 that « using homemade pesticides is illegal ».
First, it is the policy of the Master Gardeners of Ontario Inc. that « all advice given by Master Gardener Volunteers when working under the authorization of the local group must be accordance with the laws of Ontario and the principles of an Integrated Pest Management strategy » ( Coordinator's Handbook, Section 3, page 3, 2010, rev. 2013 ).
Since home-made pesticides are ILLEGAL, we do not in good conscience recommend their production or use to the public.
[ It really does not matter what is written in any handbook. Celebrity Spokesman, Sonia « Bollocks » Day, on behalf of TORONTO MASTER GARDENERS, has been VIOLATING FEDERAL LAW BY PROVIDING ILLEGAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR HOME-MADE PEST CONTROL CONCOCTIONS. Second, based on scientific research, the effects of home-made pesticides are truly not known.
Because there is no conclusive evidence, MASTER GARDENERS would not want to take the risk of recommending something that is potentially harmful to our cherished gardens and to the communities we are trying to help.
