Leaf-eating insect infests parts of Toronto

680News staff May 9, 2013 02:23:50 PM

The City of Toronto is enlisting the help of a low-flying helicopter in its effort to control a destructive insect.

The city is currently dealing with an infestation of the European gypsy moth and it’s reached a point where other control methods don’t work.

The insect is not considered to be a health risk to humans but instead eats the leaves of trees.

A two-engine helicopter will fly about 15 to 30 metres above the tree tops and spray the pesticide BTK from May 21 to June 11 in infested areas across the city.

Spraying will take place between 5 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.

There will be local road closures during the spraying.

The areas that will be sprayed are:
•Princess Margaret Boulevard and Kipling Avenue
•Thorncrest Road
•The Kingsway and Edenbridge Drive
•Valecrest Road and North Drive
•Herne Hill
•Royal York Road and The Kingsway
•Moore Park
•Tam O’Shanter Golf Course
•Humber Valley Golf Course
•Cherry Beach Park
•Toronto Island Park

Toronto has essentially RESCINDED ITS PESTICIDE BAN, and ALLOWED SAFE, EFFECTIVE, and ECONOMICAL pest control products to be used on public and private Green Spaces.  Without conventional pest control products, green spaces become pest-infested dangerous garbage dumps.  Without conventional pest control products, playing surfaces become thin and yellow, and over-run with weeds and infested with insects, resulting in the dismal destruction of safe turf playing surfaces.  Organic pesticide-free maintenance does not work !  It is impossible for home-owners or professionals to keep their properties beautiful by using so-called green alternative pesticides and practices.  Throughout the nation, anti-pesticide prohibitions have clearly demonstrated that green alternative pesticides and practices are dismal failures.   http://wp.me/P1jq40-44g   http://wp.me/P1jq40-4z3   http://wp.me/P1jq40-445   http://wp.me/P1jq40-3yl  When it comes to pesticide bans, municipal officials are thinking twice about banning pesticides by looking at the experience of those jurisdictions that have suffered the hardship and stunningly exorbitant costs of this #@!!% nonsense !   http://wp.me/p1jq40-5×1   http://wp.me/P1jq40-43V   In fact, there are real trends against pesticide bans.   http://wp.me/P1jq40-1JO   The trends against pesticide bans continue.  No one can afford this #@!!% nonsense !  Besides, Health Canada’s extensive toxicology database clearly proves that pest control products are scientifically safe since they have been scrutinized and approved by the hundreds of expert scientists at Health Canada !  WILLIAM H.
