The Imposition Of Portland’s Prohibition
Portland is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Maine, with a population of almost 67,000.
The city of Portland, Oregon was named after Portland, Maine.
On January 3rd, 2018, Portland’s city council approved a reckless & arbitrary PROHIBITION against the use of conventional pest control products for outdoor pest management on both city-owned and private properties.
The lunatжc pesticide-hating councillors voted 9-0 to approve the PROHIBITION after a one-hour workshop that was followed by a lengthy debate on 10 proposed amendments to the proposed law.
Two amendments passed, one of which set the PROHIBITION’s start date for July 1st, 2018.
It means that Portland will start using bogus organic pesticides on all city-owned properties beginning summer 2018.

The Cost Of Prohibition Will Be $700,000
Municipal staff looked into WHAT IT WILL COST TO IMPOSE PROHIBITION on city-owned properties.
A memo presented to city council made an initial implementation estimate of nearly $450,000, and other potential expenses could add almost another $250,000.
In addition to the costs related to implementing Organic Pesticide-Free Management detailed in the regulations, the memo to councillors estimated the cost of possible turf replacement at the five fields between $100,000 and $250,000, because conventional ( i.e. synthetic ) pest control products will be PROHIBITIED.
The memo detailed implementation costs of $25,000 for the education, training and outreach associated with the new regulations; $40,000 to fund a sustainability associate part-time position, and $60,000 to fund a full-time position for someone to focus on soil care and aeration, seeding and applying liquid organics.
The memo also outlines about $300,000 for new equipment, irrigation systems, and tanks and mixing systems for liquid organics.

Predictably, Riverside Municipal Golf Course and Hadlock Field would be provided with an UNFAIR EXCEPTION STATUS from the PROHIBITION, at least until 2021.
Also, until January 1st, 2021, UNFAIR EXCEPTION STATUSES are being provided to five city-owned athletic fields on Fox Street, at Deering High School, Payson Park, Deering Oaks Park and Payson Park.

In June 2017, golf course supervisor Gene Pierotti said the reductions were achieved by limiting treatments on the course’s 27 holes to once every three years, with treatments made on a rotating basis.

Really ?!?! Observers find it difficult to believe Pierotti since, as an employee of a lunatic pesticide-hating municipal government, he is expected ONLY to VALIDATE PROHIBITION. In essence, Pierotti is WRONG ! Limiting treatments will INEVITABLY lead to POOR PLAYING CONDITIONS. And besides, Pierotti does not mention that disease-control treatments will still continue to be performed on a frequent basis. Moreover, it is IMPOSSIBLE for golf courses to keep their facilities playable and attractive by using so-called green alternative pesticides and practices. Alternative methods of pest control are INEFFECTIVE, and CANNOT BE RELIED UPON to properly maintain golf facilities.
There should be NO exception status for golf facilities. The golf facilities in Portland employ the VERY SAME INGREDIENTS that are used to control damaging pests on city-owned and residential properties. In order to be CONSISTENT and FAIR, Portland must provide NO EXCEPTION STATUS for golf facilities UNLESS there is a PROPOSAL that there will be a TRANSITION TO MORE PEST RESISTANT VARIETIES OF GRASS.
The city has already curtailed spraying Roundup on sidewalks to kill weeds, and reduced use of synthetic pesticides at Riverside Municipal Golf Course by up to 60 per cent.

Beginning in 2010, city of Boulder made its first attempt at a so-called pesticide-free community. Boulder went from a $15,000 per year on a conventional pest control program to a staggering $300,000 + per year program with the advice of an incompetent consultant & anti-pesticide fanatжc, Chip-Charles Osborne. The pesticide-free program ended in failure. How can a municipality tolerate Osborne’s #@!!% organic incompetency ?!?! In the next year, Boulder re-introduced Roundup into its weed control program, and attempted to use the green alternative herbicide Fiesta on city grounds, to no avail.
In 2011, Boulder spent $100,000 per year in mechanical weed control on street medians ― using goats. These goats were originally used for land reclamation. These goats drop urine and poo which are incorporated into the fields with their hooves. There is no credibility here, not even any proof, that goats are effective. If goats somehow could be effective, everyone else would be using them for weed control. Who can afford this #@!!% ban nonsense ?!?!

When residents of Wallingford see an baseball in-field over-grown with weeds, they get really upset about the pesticide ban failure. Prohibition has inflicted a host of problems that were not really thought out properly. Because of Wallingford’s 2012 reckless and arbitrary prohibition against pest control products used in the urban landscape, municipal employees cannot use safe and effective herbicides, instead, they pull the weeds by hand and use weed trimmers. Within 18 months, Wallingford had a substantial change in the turf thickness on the athletic fields, and weeds were out of control around the buildings and landscape beds, converting green spaces into weed-infested garbage dumps. After prohibition was imposed, Wallingford’s Madison schools were forced to NEEDLESSLY SPEND EXORBITANT AMOUNTS OF MONEY. The schools were forced to buy over 40,000 DOLLARS’ worth of equipment, & were forced to hire more personnel to pull weeds. The exorbitant cost of a so-called organic pesticide-free program — with no conventional pest control products — was significantly more expensive than an integrated pest management ( IPM ) program that allows pesticide use as a last resort. According to David Paul, director of facilities for the city school system organic green alternative pesticides « just don’t work, and whatever does remotely work is so expensive it’s not conducive to our budgets ». In Wallingford, green alternative pesticides are a dismal failure. Moreover, Wallingford municipal employees are forced to resort to manual labour, and are required to hand-pull weeds, just like cotton-picking niggжrs. Those who support overturning the prohibition believe not using pest control products can still create a harmful environment for students. Children are at risk with anti-pesticide prohibition. Sports fields are over-grown with clovers and dandelions. Clover also attracts sting and potentially deadly bees.
