Treatment Once The Emerald Ash Borer Beetle Has
Been Detected Within 15 Miles Of An Ash Tree
On September 14th, 2017, the International Union for Conservation of Nature ( IUCN ) listed five prominent species of ash trees in North America as critically endangered.
The global authority on the status of the natural world is used by scientists to determine what animals and plants are in danger of disappearing, and those labeled critically endangered are facing an extremely high risk of extinction.
The five species of ash that are now considered ON THE BRINK OF EXTINCTION are …
• Black Ash
• Blue Ash
• Green Ash
• Pumpkin Ash
• White Ash
A sixth species has been deemed MERELY ENDANGERED and not as threatened as some of the other species of ash tree …
• Carolina Ash
The reason why these species are one step away from extinction is none other than the dreaded Emerald Ash Borer ( EAB ).
Said to have arrived in Michigan from Asia in the late 1990s through infested shipping pallets and detected near Detroit in 2002, Emerald Ash Borer has devastated the ash population killing hundreds of millions of trees.
Emerald Ash Borer larvae CAUSE THE DETERIORATION THAT LEADS TO THE TREE’S INEVITABLE DEATH.
Feeding on the ash tree, they chew through the bark and feast on the tissues of the tree creating S-shaped galleries that are a tell-tale sign of their presence.
This disrupts the flow of water and nutrients, causing the tree to slowly starve.
By the time SYMPTOMS ARE NOTICEABLE, it is already TOO LATE to do anything to save the tree.
There is currently NO CURE for an Emerald Ash Borer infestation, but if PRO-ACTIVE STEPS are taken, insecticide applications have proven effective in protecting ash trees.
According to the Emerald Ash Borer Information Network, Emerald Ash Borer has now been found in 31 states and two Canadian provinces.
Just last month Emerald Ash Borers were found in special traps in northern New York, a few miles from the Canadian border, and may represent an expansion of Canadian infestations into New York, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
Ash trees comprise nearly nine billion trees in the forest lands of the contiguous U.S., yet once Emerald Ash Borer has arrived in an area, IT CAN KILL ALL THE MATURE ASH TREES IN A MATTER OF THREE TO FOUR YEARS.
Mr Murphy Westwood led the assessment.
He is a member of the IUCN Global Tree Specialist Group and Director of Global Tree Conservation at The Morton Arboretum.
According to Mr Westwood ―
Ash trees are essential to plant communities of the United States and have been a popular horticultural species, planted by the millions along our streets and in gardens.
Their decline, which is likely to affect over 80 per cent of the trees, will dramatically change the composition of both wild and urban forests.
Due to the great ecological and economic value of ash trees, and because removing dead ash trees is extremely costly, much research is currently underway across sectors to halt their devastating decline.
This brings hope for the survival of the species.
Currently there are only two options when it comes to dealing with Emerald Ash Borer.
Either remove and replace the threatened ash trees, or begin a program of insecticide treatment once the beetle has been detected within 15 miles of that ash tree.
The Urban Tree Alliance offers a cost calculator to determine which option is the most cost-effective choice.

Species Face Extinction

Five Of The Six Most Prominent Ash Tree Species
In North America Are CRITICALLY ENDANGERED
― Only One Step From Going EXTINCT ―
With The Sixth Species Merely ENDANGERED
North America’s most wide-spread and valuable ash tree species are on the brink of extinction due to an invasive beetle decimating their populations, according to the latest update of The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
The IUCN Red List now includes 87,967 species of which 25,062 are threatened with extinction.
Five of the six most prominent ash tree species in North America enter The IUCN Red List as CRITICALLY ENDANGERED ― only one step from going EXTINCT ― with the sixth species assessed as merely ENDANGERED.
These species are being decimated by the invasive Emerald Ash Borer beetle ( Agrilus planipennis ).
Three of them ― Green Ash ( Fraxinus pennsylvanica ), White Ash ( Fraxinus americana ) and Black Ash ( Fraxinus nigra ) ― are the country’s most dominant ash trees, comprising nearly nine billion trees in the forested lands of the contiguous U.S.
The once-plentiful White Ash ( Fraxinus americana ) is one of the most valuable timber trees of North America used for making furniture, baseball bats and hockey sticks.
Ash trees are a key component of North American forests.
They provide habitat and food for birds, squirrels, and insects, and support important pollinator species such as butterflies and moths.
« Ash trees are essential to plant communities of the United States and have been a popular horticultural species, planted by the millions along our streets and in gardens, » says Mr Murphy Westwood, member of the IUCN Global Tree Specialist Group and Director of Global Tree Conservation at The Morton Arboretum, who led the assessment.
« Their decline, which is likely to affect over 80 per cent of the trees, will dramatically change the composition of both wild and urban forests. Due to the great ecological and economic value of ash trees, and because removing dead ash trees is extremely costly, much research is currently underway across sectors to halt their devastating decline. This brings hope for the survival of the species. »
The fast-moving Emerald Ash Borer beetle arrived in Michigan from Asia in the late 1990s via infested shipping pallets, and has already destroyed tens of millions of trees throughout the U.S. and Canada.
It has the potential to destroy over eight billion ash trees as it spreads rapidly and can kill nearly an entire forest stand of ash within six years of infestation.

If Emerald Ash Borer Infestations
Have Been Detected Within 10 To 15
Miles Away, It Is Suggested To Start
Conventional Insecticide Applications
Ever since its discovery in Michigan in 2002, the Emerald Ash Borer ( EAB ) has become an EVER-SPREADING PLAGUE, DEVASTATING communities’ ash tree populations wherever it is sighted.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture ( USDA ), as of June 1st, 2017, the Emerald Ash Borer has spread to 30 American states and two Canadian provinces.
Just within the month of June 21017 alone, there have been reports of Emerald Ash Borer spreading to new counties in Missouri, Iowa, and Illinois.
The National Park Service has even closed Roosevelt Island in New York due to the extensive damage to its ash trees.
While the adults do feed on the ash leaves in the canopy, it is actually the larvae that cause the deterioration that leads to the ash tree’s inevitable death.
As the larvae feed, they chew through the bark and feed on the tissues of the tree creating S-shaped galleries that are a tell-tale sign of their presence.
As the tree slowly starves, the canopy will begin to thin and die-back will occur at the top of the tree.
D-shaped exit holes and water sprouts along the trunk are other signs of an Emerald Ash Borer infestation in an ash tree.
Unfortunately, by the time symptoms are usually noticeable it tends to be far too late for any life-saving treatment for the ash tree.
Because of the fatal nature of an Emerald Ash Borer infestation, there aren’t a lot of options for home-owners or municipalities who have ash trees on their properties.
« The biggest thing is for people to be aware ― to learn if they have an ash tree, either on their property or near their property ― and start thinking about what sort of management they want to do to preserve their tree or remove their trees proactively, » Laurie Reid, Assistant City Arborist in Charlotte, North Carolina.
While some have written off insecticide treatments as simply too expensive, recent economic analyses have concluded that treating ash trees with effective SYSTEMIC insecticides is much less costly than removing them.
The tree size, health, location, and value should all be considered.
Trees that have already lost more than 50 per cent of their leaves and branches should be removed and replaced.
If Emerald Ash Borer infestations have been detected within 10 to 15 miles away, it is suggested to start conventional insecticide applications.
If they do end up deciding to treat their trees, there are four main ways to control Emerald Ash Borer.
The four categories are SOIL-INJECTED SYSTEMIC insecticides, TRUNK-INJECTED SYSTEMIC insecticides, SYSTEMIC BASAL TRUNK SPRAYS and PROTECTIVE AERIAL SPRAYS.
Imidacloprid, dinotefuran, azadirachtin and emamectin benzoate are all common active ingredients in the various insecticides used to control Emerald Ash Borer.
Emamectin benzoate can consistently provide two years’ worth of protection with a single application, while TRUNK INJECTIONS of azadirachtin can provide one to two years of coverage, depending on the Emerald Ash Borer pressure. [ ?!?! ]
NEEM OIL ( AZADIRACHTIN, TREE-AZIN ) ― Neem oil is the only commercial treatment available in communities where prohibition has been senselessly imposed against conventional insecticides. Neem oil is a so-called green alternative pesticide that supposedly replaces conventional insect control products. This is wrong ! Unfortunately, neem oil DOES NOT work ! Neem oil provides marginal control at best. If neem oil is the only option, it would be better to do nothing rather than use neem oil. In America, university guidelines DO NOT include neem oil. For example, in 2009, according to the university of Illinois, Emerald Ash Borer guidelines DO NOT include neem oil or Tree-Azin.
EMAMECTIN BENZOATE ( TREE-AGE ) ― Emamectin Benzoate is a conventional pest control product that will very effectively control Emerald Ash Borer. Emamectin Benzoate is applied through holes that are drilled into the trunk of the ash tree. This product is the most effective to control Emerald Ash Borer.
SOIL INJECTION APPLICATIONS of imidacloprid and dinotefuran have been found to be more effective when they are applied at the base of the trunk and in the spring rather than the fall.
IMIDACLOPRID ( CONFIDOR ) ― Imidacloprid is a conventional insect control product that will effectively control Emerald Ash Borer. Imidacloprid is applied with a SOIL INJECTOR within 1 foot of the tree trunk at a depth of 3 to 4 inches. Imidacloprid-treated trees have only survived the most severe level of infestation when treated at the 2X rate, and those trees treated with the standard Imidacloprid rate died. This product is typically applied by a Certified Applicator, but in America, Imidacloprid is NOT restricted, and home-owners can protect their own trees without a needing a license.
DINOTEFURAN ― Dinotefuran is a conventional pest control product that will effectively control Emerald Ash Borer. Dinotefuran is typically used for rescue treatments or later season treatments. Dinotefuran is similar to imidacloprid since it can be applied with a SOIL INJECTOR, but it can also be applied as a BASAL TRUNK SPRAY. Its advantage is that it translocates systemically throughout the tree about 3 times faster than imidacloprid, making it very effective for rescue treatments or later season treatments.
The timing for applying these insecticides is very important as peak egg hatch and larval establishment occur between early June and mid-August.
Because the insecticides are SYSTEMIC and are transported within the tree, they must be applied before the larvae have been able to successfully disrupt the tree’s phloem and xylem tissues.
TRUNK INJECTIONS are absorbed and distributed through the tree more quickly, taking about one to four weeks, while SOIL APPLICATIONS can take four to eight weeks and are also advantageous when the soil is excessively wet or compacted.
BASAL TRUNK SPRAYS are quick to apply and do not wound the tree either.
PROTECTIVE AERIAL SPRAYS are less common and have limited effectiveness.
While intended to target the adult Emerald Ash Borer feeding on the leaves, spray drift is common and may harm non-target organisms.
If it is decided that the tree is already too far gone, it is best to remove the tree before it can become a safety hazard.
Those who wait run the risk of limbs breaking and harming people or damaging property.
Because Emerald Ash Borer can overwinter in the dead wood, individuals are encouraged to use locally sourced firewood, as transporting firewood to other locations can help introduce the beetle to a new area.
There are often QUARANTINES set up forbidding the transportation of the infested ash wood.
The wood can be burned, mulched, or re-purposed into a creative craft, as one Chicago-based artist sculpted dead ash trees into chess pieces.

WE SPEAK THE WHOLE TRUTH ABOUT EMERALD ASH BORER FROM AN INDEPENDENT PERSPECTIVE !
We are the National Organization Responding Against HUJE that conspire to destroy the Green space and other industries ( NORAHG ). As a non-profit and independent organization, we are environmentalists who are dedicated to reporting about truth-challenged pesticide-hating fanatжcs ( HUJE ) who conspire to destroy businesses that are dependent on the use of safe and effective conventional pest control products. We also report on the work of several highly-rated leading experts who have recognized expertise, training, and background in matters concerning pest control products, and who promote environmental realism and pesticide truths.
Not surprisingly, enviro-fanatжcs have demonstrated that they are incapable of processing overwhelming scientific evidence. Should we trust these fanatжcs, who conveniently ignore scientific evidence, and attempt to impose their politicized-doctrines and twisted life-style choices against our society ?!?!
NORAHG was the brainchild of Mr William H Gathercole and his colleagues in 1991. Mr Gathercole is now retired, although his name continues to appear as founder. We dare to defy the pesticide-hating fanatжcs by exploring the whole truth from an independent perspective on The Pesticide Truths Web-Site … https://pesticidetruths.com/ If you wish to receive free reports on issues that concern you, please contact us at … force.of.de.nature@gmail.com WILLIAM H GATHERCOLE AND NORAH G
