Can MUNICIPALITIES afford the HARDSHIP AND COST of this #@!!% PESTICIDE BAN NONSENSE ?!?!
When it comes to PESTICIDE BANS, Municipal Officials can learn a lot from the experience of those jurisdictions that have SUFFERED THE HARDSHIP AND COST OF THIS #@!!% NONSENSE !
And there is little debate about the fact that BANS convert communities into SHABBIER AND DANGEROUS PEST-INFESTED GARBAGE DUMPS.
PESTICIDE-FREE means DEAD TREES and WEED-INFESTED PLAYING SURFACES.
EMERALD ASH BORER, a wood-boring insect that is HIGHLY DESTRUCTIVE to Ash Trees, is an example where Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION led to municipalities being forced to spend STUNNINGLY EXORBITANT AMOUNTS OF MONEY AND RESOURCES.
It is IMPOSSIBLE to control EMERALD ASH BORER without conventional pest control products.
Emerald Ash Borer
Overview
In provinces like Ontario, Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION has led to mature street trees are DYING because of uncontrolled pests, such as the EMERALD ASH BORER.
The EMERALD ASH BORER is an invasive species that is HIGHLY DESTRUCTIVE to Ash Trees.
Because of its 2009 PROVINCIAL PROHIBITION, Ontario is a #@!!% PEST-INFESTED GARBAGE DUMPS WITH DEAD TREES AND DANGEROUS GREEN SPACES.
The DEVASTATION of Ash Trees has been EXTENSIVE because there are NO valid economical alternatives to replace the prohibited products.
Consequently, municipalities are INCAPABLE of providing adequate control of the EMERALD ASH BORER, and are UNABLE to keep their Ash Trees alive.

Emerald Ash Borer
Agrilus planipennis
Emerald Ash Borer, Agrilus planipennis, is a wood-boring pest that is HIGHLY DESTRUCTIVE to Ash Trees.
Emerald Ash Borer will be AS DESTRUCTIVE as Chestnut Blight and Dutch Elm Disease.
Emerald Ash Borer has killed at least 50 to 100 million Ash Trees so far, and threatens to kill most of the 7.5 billion Ash Trees throughout North America.
Emerald Ash Borer threatens the Fraxinus genus ― Black Ash and Green Ash Trees are preferred.
Emerald Ash Borer also attacks White Ash, but usually only after Black Ash and Green Ash Trees have been eliminated.
Emerald Ash Borer
Damage
In a typical municipality, the 4-year period, from year 8 through year 11 after infestation, will see 60 to 100 per cent of its Ash Trees DECLINE AND DIE.
It is common for all the trees in a single neighborhood to DECLINE AND DIE at the same time.
Emerald Ash Borer
Distribution In Canada
Since July 2011 through October 2012, Canadian Food Inspection Agency has confirmed the presence of the Emerald Ash Borer throughout the Province of Ontario and Western Quebec.
Emerald Ash Borer was first discovered in Windsor, Ontario in 2002.
By 2009, Emerald Ash Borer extended its distribution throughout Ontario and Eastern Quebec ―
INFESTED COUNTIES IN ONTARIO ― Essex, Elgin, Huron, Lambton, Middlesex, Norfolk.
INFESTED MUNICIPALITIES IN ONTARIO ― Chatham-Kent, Durham, Halton, Hamilton, Ottawa, Peel, Sault Sainte Marie, Toronto, York.
INFESTED MUNICIPALITIES IN QUEBEC ― Carignan, Chambly, Gatineau, Montreal, Richelieu, Saint-Basile-Le-Grand, Saint-Mathias-Sur-Richelieu.

Emerald Ash Borer
Management Program
Implementation of the management plan should begin with the REMOVAL OF WEAK AND DECLINING ASH TREES even if Emerald Ash Borer has not yet infested the municipality.
Once the Emerald Ash Borer infestation has been confirmed, insecticide treatments should begin IMMEDIATELY to slow down the insect population build up.
Emerald Ash Borer
Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION Leads To DEAD TREES
In jurisdictions where Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION has been IMPOSED, DEVASTATION of Ash Trees will be EXTENSIVE because there are NO valid economical alternatives to replace conventional insecticides.
In provinces like Ontario, Emerald Ash Borer was MORE CONTROLLABLE before the 2009 PROVINCIAL PROHIBITION.
According to Arborist Sean Barker, 4 years ago we had effective products ( i.e. 4 years ago, there was no Ontario Pesticide Ban ).
Consequently, municipalities will be INCAPABLE of providing adequate control of Emerald Ash Borer, and are UNABLE to keep their Ash Trees alive.
In jurisdictions where Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION has been IMPOSED, Municipal Employees should simply be equipped with CHAIN SAWS.
If municipalities truly want to save their Urban Forests, then they should have their LOCAL PESTICIDE BAN RESCINDED.

Monitoring With Purple Traps
The most effective method to monitor for Emerald Ash Borer is to utilize Purple Traps.
Purple Traps are special boxes designed to attract the Emerald Ash Borer with a combination of color and chemical attractants.
Emerald Ash Borer is attracted to the colours blue, red, or purple.
In addition, Purple Traps have a special botanical oil that also attract the insect.
Emerald Ash Borer
Monitoring By Girdling
Girdling is used to make TRAP TREES for detection and survey of the Emerald Ash Borer.
By severely cutting the bark, the Ash Tree becomes stressed, thus attracting the insect.
These girdled trees will die within 2 years, but, in the meantime, during their decline, they will become more and more attractive to Emerald Ash Borer and serve as a way of monitoring the infestation.
Emerald Ash Borer
CFIA Management Program
Canadian Food Inspection Agency ( CFIA ) has taken decisive action to stop the unintentional spread of the invasive Emerald Ash Borer.
CFIA is focusing its efforts on preventing the movement of regulated materials from infested areas to areas where Emerald Ash Borer has not been detected.
New regulations prohibit the movement of Ash Tree materials and firewood of all species from specific areas of Ontario and Quebec, as this is a key way the insect is spread.
To limit the spread of Emerald Ash Borer, new Ministerial Orders have been enacted.
Specifically, Ministerial Orders prohibit the movement of ash nursery stock, ash trees, ash logs, ash wood, rough lumber and other wood packaging materials from ash, bark, wood chips or bark chips from ash, and firewood from all tree species that has not been treated to eliminate Emerald Ash Borer.
Ministerial Orders for Emerald Ash Borer also extend to vehicles that are used to carry these items.
Those who move these materials from regulated areas without prior permission from Canadian Food Inspection Agency ( CFIA ) could face fines and/or prosecution.
Emerald Ash Borer
Effective Preventive Treatments
In the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, there are currently NO EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS for the CONTROL of the Emerald Ash Borer.
Both provinces have SENSELESSLY IMPOSED PROHIBITION against pest control products used in the Urban Landscape.
The DEVASTATION of Ontario’s and Quebec’s Urban Forests is associated with their PROVINCIAL PROHIBITIONS against Health-Canada-Approved products.
This is another demonstration of the FAILURE of PROHIBITION against the use of pest control products in the Urban Landscape.
It is IMPOSSIBLE to control Emerald Ash Borer without conventional pest control products.
There are NO viable, efficacious, economical, or low-risk alternatives to replace conventional pest control products.
Green Alternative Pesticides like Neem Oil DO NOT WORK !
If municipalities truly want to save their Urban Forests, then they should have their LOCAL PESTICIDE BAN RESCINDED.
Otherwise, they should just equip its Municipal Employees with CHAIN SAWS since ONLY conventional pest control products will EFFECTIVELY CONTROL Emerald Ash Borer.

Neem Oil ( azadirachtin, TreeAzin )
Neem Oil is the ONLY COMMERCIAL TREATMENT available in jurisdictions where Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION has been SENSELESSLY IMPOSED.
Neem Oil is a so-called Green Alternative Pesticide that supposedly replaces conventional pest control products.
Neem Oil DOES NOT WORK !
Neem Oil provides MARGINAL CONTROL AT BEST.
If Neem Oil is THE ONLY OPTION, it would be better to DO NOTHING rather than use Neem Oil.
In America, university guidelines DO NOT include Neem Oil.
For example, in 2009, according to University of Illinois, Emerald Ash Borer Guidelines DO NOT INCLUDE NEEM OIL OR TREEAZIN.

Moreover, Neem Oil has NOT been subject to stringent, science-based evaluations, and is NOT supported by scientific research and documentation.
Consequently, by December 2012, Neem Oil will be taken off store shelves and ALL DOMESTIC USES ARE CANCELLED.
Besides, Neem Oil DOES NOT WORK !
Municipalities should STOP FUNDING PESTICIDE BAN FAILURES LIKE NEEM OIL.
If Government Officials truly want to save the Urban Forests, then they must DEMAND that LOCAL PESTICIDE BANS be RESCINDED.
Otherwise, Government Officials should just equip employees with CHAIN SAWS as the watch the Urban Forest DECLINE AND DIE.

Imidacloprid ( Confidor )
Imidacloprid is a conventional pest control product that WILL EFFECTIVELY CONTROL Emerald Ash Borer.
Unfortunately, in jurisdictions like Ontario, it is a PROHIBITED PRODUCT.
Imidacloprid is applied with a SOIL INJECTOR within 1 foot of the tree trunk at a depth of 3 to 4 inches.
Imidacloprid-treated trees have only survived the most severe level of infestation when treated at the 2X rate, and those trees treated with the standard Imidacloprid rate died.
This product is typically applied by a Certified Applicator, but in America, Imidacloprid is not restricted, and home-owners can protect their own trees without a needing a license.
In 2012, City of Ottawa Group created a PILOT PROGRAM using Confidor ( Imidacloprid ) to fight Emerald Ash Borer.

For healthy trees, pesticides provide effective protection against Emerald Ash Borer. For ash trees 45 inches in circumference or less, home-owners can purchase products at their local garden centers and do the application themselves.
Again, according to Purdue University, home-owners should use products in the form of a SOIL DRENCH that contain a formulation of 1.47 per cent Imidacloprid.

Dinotefuran
Dinotefuran is a conventional pest control product that WILL EFFECTIVELY CONTROL Emerald Ash Borer.
Dinotefuran is typically used for RESCUE TREATMENTS OR LATER SEASON TREATMENTS.
Unfortunately, in jurisdictions like Ontario, it is a PROHIBITED PRODUCT.
Dinotefuran is SIMILAR TO IMIDACLOPRID since it can be applied with a SOIL INJECTOR, but it can also be applied as a TRUNK SPRAY.
Its advantage is that it TRANSLOCATES THROUGHOUT THE TREE ABOUT 3 TIMES FASTER THAN IMIDACLOPRID, making it VERY EFFECTIVE FOR RESCUE TREATMENTS OR LATER SEASON TREATMENTS.
In 2009, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture ( USDA ) Forest Service, Dinotefuran is a relatively new pesticide that is being considered as a possible alternative to Imidacloprid for the control Emerald Ash Borer.

Kitchener’s Municipal Officials recommended spending 4.3 MILLION DOLLARS over 10 years to remove Ash Trees killed or weakened by Emerald Ash Borer.
That figure did not include replacing the lost trees with new ones at an estimated expense of 6.75 MILLION DOLLARS.
The cutting down of most of the city’s Ash Trees and planting a new trees could total more than 11 MILLION DOLLARS during the next 10 years.
The TAX RATE would have to be INCREASED by 11 percentage points to raise the funds.

The FAILURE of PROHIBITION led to the DESTRUCTION of Ash Trees in London, Ontario.
Municipalities like City of London PROHIBITED pest control products under the PRETEXT of protecting health and environment.
London became a PESTICIDE-FREE city with DEAD TREES.
In fact, pest control products are HEALTH-CANADA-APPROVED, FEDERALLY-LEGAL, SCIENTIFICALLY-SAFE, and CAUSE NO HARM.
London, or the former « Forest City », NEEDED TO KILL 96 PER CENT OF ITS Ash Trees because of LUNATIC Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION.
As of 2012, the loss of Ash Trees in London led to a 300,000 DOLLARS LOSS OF PROPERTY VALUE, based on a conservative estimate of about 5,500 dollars as the amount a tree adds to the value of a property.

NORAHG is a NATIONAL NON PROFIT NON PARTISAN organization that does not accept money from corporations or governments or trade associations, and represents NO VESTED INTERESTS WHATSOEVER.
NORAHG is dedicated to reporting the work of RESPECTED and HIGHLY RATED EXPERTS who promote ENVIRONMENTAL REALISM and PESTICIDE TRUTHS.
NORAHG pledges to deliver reports that are worthy of peoples’ time and of peoples’ concern, reports that might ordinarily never have breached the parapet.
NORAHG was the brainchild of William H. Gathercole and his colleagues in 1991. Mr. Gathercole is now retired, although his name continues to appear as founder.
