He was the longest serving president from 1966 through 1968.

One year later, in 1967, the « FIRST ANNUAL NATIONAL CONFERENCE » was held at the Skyline Hotel, in Toronto.

Mr Steel was followed by other earlier CGSA-leaders who also served as presidents, such as ― • Mr David Gourlay Sr • Mr Tom Johnston • Mr Camil Labelle • Mr Douglas Meyer • Mr Gordon Witteveen.

Mr Douglas Meyer was CGSA’s LAST GREAT INSPIRATIONAL LEADER — see later segment.

Many, but not all, of earlier CGSA-leaders have been selected for the John B Steel Award for performing distinguished service & for advancing the profession of golf superintendent — just like R Marie Thorne in 2021.

By 1975, the « NATIONAL CONFERENCE », which was called Canadian International Turfgrass Conference & Trade Show, was transferred to CGSA from Royal Canadian Golf Association ( RCGA ).

By 2020, the « NATIONAL CONFERENCE » was re-named Canadian Golf Course Management Conference.

In fall 2017, National Golf Course Owners Association ( NGCOA ) was allowed to TAKE-OVER the CGSA.

Incredibly, a very small group of CGSA-leaders were allowed to make a settlement that UNCEREMONIOUSLY UNRAVELLED the great 50-year legacy of the CGSA.

Mr John B Steel & earlier CGSA-leaders would have been horrified.

This INSIDIOUS TAKE-OVER would BETRAY thousands of decent & hard-working people who rely on the golf course maintenance industry.

Not surprisingly, some CGSA-leaders attracted suspicions of alleged CONFLICTS-OF-IINTEREST.

Furthermore, CGSA-leaders had already financially MIS-MANAGED their trade association, rendering it susceptible to TAKE-OVER.

Again, Mr John B Steel & earlier CGSA-leaders would have been horrified.

The TAKE-OVER proves, yet again, that CGSA-leaders are incapable of making any correct decisions — including those involving awards.

The TAKE-OVER also validates the historic rivalry with club managers, whereupon superintendents are not considered competent in the management of financial affairs.

The FINANCIAL MISMANAGEMENT of CGSA, which led to the TAKE-OVER, with losses more than 100,000-dollars, certainly DID NOT benefit the advancement of the profession of golf superintendent.
