Positive Waves From The Golf Courses ( Card )
Introduction
Golf Industry Creates Positive Waves For Society
Paying Golfers Deserve Thicker, Greener, Attractive,
Pest-Free, & Safe Golf Courses As Urban Green Spaces
Golf course superintendents can be described as the planet’s great conservationists who have been maintaining and conserving the world’s largest ground cover vegetation ― turfgrass ― for hundreds of years.
Universally, « correct and disciplined » main-stream golf course superintendents are professionals who are paid to take care of golf courses ― they manage the budgets, man-power, materials, and schedules needed to correctly maintain high-quality playing conditions and aesthetics for paying golf-customers.
Superintendents constantly monitor the health of turfgrasses through careful observation, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, insects, weeds, and abiotic disorders.
Their skilled management of turfgrass pests is accomplished by the correct and necessary use of conventional pest control products.
Their use of pest control products to enhance golf courses, which is also good for the environment.
And, these products are government-approved, federally-legal, scientifically-safe, practically-non-toxic, and will cause no harm.
Their use has contributed extensively to the high-quality playing conditions and aesthetics of golf courses, and the preservation of the environment.

Summary
Audubon Co-Operative Sanctuary Program For Golf
Not so long ago, the golf industry was viewed as using too much water, and too many chemicals.
Golf courses were not seen as environmentally-friendly.
The golf industry has evolved into being a much more environmentally-aware and environmentally-conscious.
Audubon International is willing to stand shoulder to shoulder with the golf industry.
Of the thousands of golf courses across Canada, a mere 74 have joined The Audubon Co-Operative Sanctuary Program For Golf, as of 2018.
The Audubon Co-Operative Sanctuary Program For Golf is designed to continue the environmental improvement that golf is going through, and to provide a way for the golf industry, the non-playing public, and golfers, to see how they are doing.
As a business benefit, there are certainly marketing and positioning benefits to be realized with Audubon.

Positive Waves – The Audubon Co-Operative Sanctuary Program For Golf
Audubon International
In many ways, they seem like strange bed-fellows, but, in fact, golf courses and Audubon International are ON THE SAME SIDE.
They are either trying to prove that golf courses ARE NOT, or at least DO NOT NEED TO BE, the evil villains that many environmentalists make them out to be.
According to Ms Christine Kane, CEO of Audubon International ―
Golf has evolved over time to be a much more ENVIRONMENTALLY-AWARE and ENVIRONMENTALLY-CONSCIOUS sport and business.
Twenty years ago, golf was looked at as using TOO MUCH WATER, and TOO MANY CHEMICALS, so it was not seen as an environmental ally.
Over the years that has changed for the better.
So, while Audubon International is willing to stand shoulder to shoulder with golf courses in the battle for the hearts and souls of the general public, it is surprising how few Canadian facilities have taken advantage of it.
Of the thousands of golf courses across Canada, a mere 74 have joined The Audubon Co-Operative Sanctuary Program For Golf.

Joining The Program
Okay, it is not as simple as just signing up.
There is a program you have to go through to become a Certified Member Club, and yes, there is a cost.
It is $350 ( US ) a year to be a member of Audubon International.
Once you become certified, and you go through a re-certification program every three years, you have the right to advertise your golf facility as a Certified Member Club.

Categories Of The Program
The program is designed to continue the environmental improvement that golf is going through, and to provide a way for the golf industry, the non-playing public, and golfers, to see how they are doing.
According to Ms Christine Kane, CEO of Audubon International ―
The ACSP Program for Golf has six areas [ i.e. categories ] that golf courses must achieve before they can be certified.
First, everyone has to start with a Site Assessment and Environmental Plan.
You have to see where you are to know where you’re going.
You have to provide us with that information so we can help you with suggestions and information.
You have to do that first, then the next five, you can do in whatever order makes the most sense for you.
The other five categories that have to be addressed are ―
• Chemical Use Reduction [ ? ] & Safety
• Outreach & Education
• Water Conservation
• Water Quality Management
• Wildlife & Habitat Management
Kane says that some of those [ i.e. categories ] are self-explanatory, like trying to reduce your water, and making the most efficient use of water through design and technology.

Wildlife & Habitat Management
Wildlife & Habitat Management is one area that really seems to strike a chord with both golfers and non-golfers alike.
According to Ms Christine Kane, CEO of Audubon International ―
Many golf courses have excellent opportunities for both long-term habitat use and migratory habitat use for birds and other animals.
On average, about 30 per cent of a golf course property is actually used for golf and the rest is out of play areas, or facilities, so there are plenty of opportunities to create native areas.
That could be by removing invasive plants and replanting with native plants that birds, or foxes, or deer, or monarch butterflies, that need milkweed, can use.

Benefits Of The Program
So, if you’re a golf course owner or general manager, why should you be thinking about talking to your superintendent about The Audubon Co-Operative Sanctuary Program For Golf ?!?!
According to Ms Christine Kane, CEO of Audubon International ―
The main BENEFIT is doing the right thing.
From a business perspective, there are certainly marketing and positioning BENEFITS to be realized.
We encourage courses to use this in their marketing to set themselves apart from their competition.
We hear that in private clubs, it instills a sense of ownership among the members and a sense of camaraderie among the employees.
Audubon provides logos to certified member clubs that can even be incorporated into club merchandise.
Ms Kane also provides this food for thought ―
The next generation of golfers, the millennials and the Gen Zs are going to EXPECT this.
They are going to EXPECT that everyone should be doing their part for the environment.
Very soon we’re going to reach the point where if your golf course is not doing this, then you’re going to stick out, and that’s a big change.
I think this is going to be a big wake up call for a lot of owners.

Niagara Parks Commission Golf Courses
Wildlife & Habitat Management is one aspect of the program that Mr Tom Newton is quite familiar with.
Mr Newton is the Senior Golf Superintendent for the Niagara Parks Commission and oversees their three golf courses.
The two courses at Legends On The Niagara were certified under The Audubon Co-Operative Sanctuary Program For Golf in 2014 and re-certified in 2017.
Mr Newton is also in the process of getting certification for their Whirlpool Course.
As a result of improving the Wildlife & Habitat Management at Legends On The Niagara, Mr Newton says they regularly see deer, wild turkey, foxes, coyotes, Canada geese, bald eagles, hawks, and endangered snapping turtles, as well as an abundance of fish in their ponds.
The turtles have taken to laying their eggs in the sand traps and the maintenance staff, who have come to feel a connection with the program, immediately fence that small area of the bunker off with a sign explaining why and advising golfers to take a free drop somewhere else in the trap.
According to Mr Tom Newton ―
I’m passionate myself about doing the right thing for the environment.

Negative Waves With Activist-Superintendents ( Card )
――――――――――――――――――――
Background Information
Description Of Activist-Superintendents
« Activist-Superintendents » Can
Only Be Described As Failures
They Are Most Certainly Not The
Planet’s Great Conservationists
Unfortunately, some golf facilities are infested with so-called « activist-superintendents ».
They reject « correct and disciplined » turf maintenance practices that provide paying golf-customers with high-quality playing conditions and aesthetics.
What possible benefit can be touted by « activist-superintendents » for unilaterally and arbitrarily adopting incorrect and undisciplined doctrines ?!?!
They allow themselves to become distracted with failed, unproven, incorrect, and undisciplined doctrines that DO NOT WORK, such as …
• go brown anti-cosmetic golf maintenance • fertilizer nutrient reduction • integrated pest management practices ( IPM ) • Micah’s MLSN cheat sheet • minimal levels for sustainable nutrition • organic maintenance • Pace Turf’s climate appraisal • self-imposing restrictions & prohibitions against pesticides & fossil fuels • spot spray & spot treatment replacing blanket application • switching to ineffective green alternative pesticides • zero cultivation & reduced core aeration.
These doctrines are NOT outstanding, NOT innovative, and NOT interesting ideas ― they are all FAILURES !
Do « activist-superintendents » understand that they are not employed to experiment with doctrines that DO NOT WORK ?!?!
Why do they chose to ignore the overwhelming science-based, time-tested, correct, and disciplined turf maintenance practices ?!?!
Especially when the alternative is dead grass and useless playing surfaces.
Consequently, « activist-superintendents » create NEGATIVE WAVES for the golf industry.
Many observers believe that « activist-superintendents » represent the greatest threats to the golf industry today.
Their use of incorrect and undisciplined maintenance doctrines may be considered as attacks against the Golf Industry.
By adopting these doctrines, observers question the « activist-superintendents’ » ability and competence to provide what paying golf-customers demand … high-quality playing conditions and aesthetics.
Those golf courses where these incorrect maintenance doctrines have been adopted can expect to have dead grass and useless playing surfaces.
Who wants to play golf on #@!!% pest-infested garbage dumps ?!?!
Should the adoption of these doctrines become grounds for termination ?!?!
In order to deter « activist-superintendents », perhaps a Master Plan For Correct Turf Maintenance Practices should be written into their contracts.
These activists simply do not deserve to work in the golf industry that they threaten, attack, and betray.
They are not paid to be activists ― they are paid to satisfy paying golf-customers with high-quality playing conditions and aesthetics.
Do golf-customers really want to tolerate the #@!!% nonsense of incorrect and undisciplined maintenance doctrines of « activist-superintendents » ?!?!
