Dr Schwarcz said while there are some who don’t follow regulations in place, THE BURDEN TO CATCH THOSE INFRACTIONS MUST NOT BE PLACED ON THE GENERAL PUBLIC.
According to Dr Schwarcz ―
If you saw someone applying pesticides in a way that shouldn’t be applied, that’s a different story, but how is some passer-by [ or a LUNATIC INFORMANT SERVICE ] going to be able to judge whether or not the farmer is using that pesticide in a proper manner.
It’s UTTER NONSENSE, and it sends the message you shouldn’t be using pesticides.
Pest control products and Genetically-Modified Organisms ( GMOs ) were just two topics Dr Schwarcz touched on during the presentation, and Question and Answer session [ Q&A ], at the University Of Prince Edward Island.
Much of the presentation focused on his Dr Schwarcz’s work with personal nutrition and demystifying claims of fad diets, miracle foods, detoxes, and supplements.

Organic Food Versus Conventional Food
However, the Q&A session saw the focus shift towards pest control products, and Organic Food versus Conventional Food, two hot topic issues on Prince Edward Island as of late.
When asked by an audience member to go over the pros and cons of both types of food, Dr Schwarcz said it is a complex issue with a lot of MIS-INFORMATION.
Dr Schwarcz said while arguments for environmental concerns are strongly supported, the main reason people buy Organic Food is because THEY BELIEVE THERE IS NO PESTICIDE RESIDUE, WHICH IS NOT THE CASE.
Farmers are able to spray pest control products on Organic Food if it comes from a NATURAL SOURCE.
Dr Schwarcz said while there are fewer organic pesticides available than conventional, both are also approved by the same group, Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency.
According to Dr Schwarcz ―
It doesn’t matter if they’re going to be used organically or conventionally, THERE’S NO SUCH DISTINCTION.
While there may be somewhat more pesticide residue on conventional than organic produce, according to Health Canada it doesn’t’ matter because everything has been approved and the levels are monitored.
When a pesticide is registered, these things are all examined in excruciating detail.
Dr Schwarcz also acknowledged that while regulations are in place, problems can be created when some do not follow those regulations.
He also pointed to areas in the developing world, where farmers don’t know how to dilute the pest control products, and even among migrant workers in the United States.
According to Dr Schwarcz ―
You see things you don’t want to see … they’re out there with no equipment whatsoever spraying, they go back home to their huts drenched in pesticides and transferring it to their kids.
Those are REAL ISSUES, not the residues we have here.
