Anti-pesticide group gains traction; gets spraying moratorium on city property
"(Barlow) has asked for comment from the user groups (ball, soccer, field hockey, etc.)," said committee chair and city councillor Kevin Chernoff. "We're hoping to have some feedback before next council meeting. We're not doing any spraying or anything until we get that feedback."
In fact, he said, they won't be spraying at all anymore until council has an opportunity to vote on the issue.
He also said the activist group Citizens for a Pesticide Free Castlegar and Area (find them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/520978651273161/?fref=ts), and their petition with more than 1,000 signatures, was instrumental in making the moratorium happen.
"I think their input has been important in developing which direction the city takes," he said, adding the city only sprays as needed, so there wasn't much left to be done this season anyway. "Ultimately, it will be up to council to decide if they'll continue spraying as needed or ban pesticides on city property."
Council's next meeting is Aug. 12, but the issue may not come before council until the following meeting on Sept. 3, depending on how quickly the committee can garner feedback and develop a report.
GET READY TO CRAWL ON YOUR HANDS AND KNEES LIKE COTTON PICKERS
If non-expert anti-pesticide activists gain traction, and city of Castlegar decides to go pesticide-free, then municipal officials had better get used to crawling on their hand and knees for weed-picking like cotton-pickers. No one wants this #@!!% nonsense of manual weed picking just because there is an arbitrary pesticide ban ! If a small minority of highly-motivated residents want to spend 40 to 50 hours plus per week weeding their properties, that’s their prerogative. Imposing that life-style on everyone else for no good reason is not. Manual weed picking is totally ineffective. http://wp.me/p1jq40-4ml It is impossible for home-owners or maintenance professionals to keep their properties weed-free and beautiful by using practices like weed-pulling, mowing height, and aeration. Without conventional pest control products, playing surfaces become thin and yellow, and over-run with weeds and infested with insects, resulting in the dismal destruction of safe turf playing surfaces and turning them into garbage dumps. http://wp.me/p1jq40-44g http://wp.me/p1jq40-4z3 Who wants to live in #@!!% pest-infested garbage dumps just because a small group of activists seek to impose needless pesticide bans ?!?! Pesticide bans are a farce. Residents are obtaining products either from other provinces, or mostly from across the border in the United States, or through the internet. http://wp.me/p1jq40-4ms It is not illegal to own or possess these products, only to apply them. So, forget about manual weed picking just like a cotton-picker. WILLIAM H. GATHERCOLE AND NORAH G https://pesticidetruths.com/ http://wp.me/P1jq40-2rr
