Furthermore, Canadian Cancer Society FAILS TO EXPLAIN is that the 100 STUDIES are ALL EPIDEMIOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONAL STUDIES WITH VERY WEAK LINKS between pesticides and disease.
According to Health Canada ―
Epidemiology studies identify associations rather than causation, and are examined IN CONJUNCTION WITH well conducted toxicity studies that are specifically designed to elicit toxic effects over a series of dose levels.
These animal toxicity data are assessed to determine if there is any biological basis for the potential associations noted in epidemiology studies.
The examination of animal toxicity data from internationally accepted guideline studies using doses well above those to which humans are typically exposed, combined with exposure data obtained from well-designed studies, is currently a useful methodology available for assessing risks to human health.

DR. BRUCE AMES, an American biochemist and molecular biologist, is ONE OF THE MOST CELEBRATED SCIENTISTS IN THE WORLD TODAY, and is also AMONG THOSE WHO ARE THE MOST CITED.
Besides numerous other awards, he is the recipient of the U.S. National Medal of Science.
Dr. Ames, for many years, was a senior staff member at the University of California, Berkeley and is the developer of the Ames Test, a process widely used for evaluating the mutagenicity ( which may then indicate the carcinogenicity ) of a chemical.
Now retired from Berkeley, he continues to work at the California Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute, searching for the causes of cancer and other diseases of aging.

The idea that there is an epidemic of human cancer caused by synthetic industrial chemicals is NOT SUPPORTED BY EI-THER TOXICOLOGY OR EPIDEMIOLOGY.
Though there are some epidemiologic studies that find an association between cancer and low levels of industrial pollutants, the studies do not correct for diet, which is a potentially large confounding factor; moreover, the levels of pollutants are low and rarely seem plausible as a causal factor when compared to the background of natural chemicals that are rodent carcinogens.

International Agency For Research On Cancer ( IARC ) is renowned for producing ASSESSMENTS OF CARCINOGENS.
Its reports were widely regarded as the most authoritative assessments available on cancer risks.
Since the early 1970’s, International Agency For Research On Cancer, a part of the World Health Organization, has produced assessments of carcinogenic hazards for use by researchers and regulators.
International Agency For Research On Cancer ( IARC ) classifies the agents it evaluates into one of the following categories ―
Category 1 ― carcinogenic to humans
Category 2A — probably carcinogenic to humans
Category 2B — possibly carcinogenic to humans
Category 3 ― not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity in humans
Category 4 ― probably not carcinogenic to humans
However, there is reason to believe that at least two other exposures classified by the agency as group 1 carcinogens are OPEN TO QUESTION ― namely, DIESEL EXHAUST and environmental TOBACCO SMOKE.
According to Geoffrey C. Kabat, it appears that some of the agency’s evaluations may OVERSTATE the risks, for reasons that tell us a great deal about the science and politics of risk assessment.
Since only a SMALL NUMBER of IARC’s assessments have been REVIEWED BY INDEPENDENT SCIENTISTS, it remains to be seen to what extent the ranking of other agents is affected by FALSE POSITIVES.

For example, according to the critics, the classification of FORMALDEHYDE in group 1 [ carcinogenic to humans ] appears to be « particularly problematic », being based primarily on two positive studies, one of which has SERIOUS METHODOLOGICAL FLAWS, while the other shows INCONSISTENT RESULTS.
Among the agents classed in Group 2B [ possibly carcinogenic to humans ] are COFFEE and DDT, both of which have been extensively studied, and found NOT BE LINKED TO CANCER.

Cancer cases and cancer deaths are DROPPING in many corners of the United States, according to statistics released January 4th, 2012, by American Cancer Society.
The REDUCTION IN OVERALL CANCER DEATH RATES since 1990 in men and 1991 in women translates to the AVOIDANCE of about 1,024,400 deaths from cancer.
During the most recent 5 years for which there are data ( 2004 – 2008 ), overall cancer incidence rates DECLINED slightly in men ( by 0.6 per cent per year ) and were STABLE in women, while cancer death rates DECREASED by 1.8 per cent per year in men and by 1.6 per cent per year in women.
Over a ten-year-period of available data ( 1999 – 2008 ), cancer death rates have DECLINED by more than 1 per cent per year in men and women of every racial/ethnic group with the exception of American Indians/Alaska Natives.
For 2012, American Cancer Society projects 1,638,910 cancer cases will be diagnosed and 577,190 Americans will die of the disease.

NO pest control product registered in Canada or in the United States is classified as either a carcinogen or probable carcinogen.
Only pests control products that do not pose an unacceptable risk of cancer in humans are registered for use in the Urban Landscape.
Assessment of cancer risks involves challenges that warrant special consideration.
The government’s approach to cancer risk assessment is based on the weight of the scientific evidence obtained through the evaluation of the entire data package.

All potential exposures ( e.g. food, water, workplace ) that may occur over a lifetime are considered in the assessment.
Detailed risk assessments and very large margins of safety are built into the human health evaluations that the government carries out on proposed pesticides so that the public will be protected from risks such as cancer.
