Canandaigua is a city in Ontario County, New York, with a population of over 10,000.
City council voted AGAINST repealing moratorium [ i.e. prohibition ] on pesticides in parks.
On October 5th, 2017, an eight-year-long debate on the use of pesticides in the city of Canandaigua’s parks ended with the city STAYING THE COURSE [ by re-imposing pesticide-free IPM policy & prohibition against conventional pest control products ].
After a heated volley of opposing positions, City Council members voted NOT to repeal a five-year pesticide moratorium [ and re-impose its pesticide-free IPM policy & prohibition, ] just a year and a half after it was enacted.

Parks staff are dealing with MORE WEEDS and pest damage a year into the moratorium.
And city parks staff are having to deal with MORE WEEDS AND PESTS.
An organic herbicide sprayed in landscape beds in Kershaw Park and the City Pier was INEFFECTIVE.
Northeast Park also is showing signs of HEAVY GRUB DAMAGE, leaving a THIN AND WEAK TURF that creates safety issues for those who use the athletic fields there.
Parks staff members WORKED MORE HOURS to control weeds than they did when the pesticide Roundup was applied, which COSTS THREE TIMES LESS than the cost of the herbicide.
[ Wherever IPM is entirely relied upon for the maintenance of green spaces, damaging insects and invasive weeds MAY ONLY BE SLIGHTLY SUPPRESSED, at the expense of plant growth, playing conditions, and appearance. IPM leads to pest-infested GARBAGE DUMPS ! ]

On October 10th, 2017, councilmembers dug their heels in on both sides of the issue.

I find that this is absolutely ridiculous.
If we’re worried about the watershed, let’s NOT forget that we have only three parks that actually drain into the Canandaigua Lake watershed.
Yet 70 PER CENT OF THE LAND that drains into the watershed is AGRICULTURAL and NOT regulated by any type of moratorium.
Councilmember Wade recommended focusing instead on agricultural land-owners and the New York State Boat Launch, where 250 boats are launched each weekend.
MATT MARTIN – Common-Sense Councilmember
Councilman Matt Martin said the opposition to repealing the moratorium [ that would re-impose pesticide-free IPM policy & prohibition against conventional pest control products ] was perplexing.

One year is too soon to give up and go back to what we were doing before. [ i.e. back to using conventional pest control products that are safe and effective. ]
