Anti-Pesticide TERROR-Talk in Ontario
Overview from an Independent Perspective
On May 31st, 2012, a Private Member’s Bill introduced by Ted Chudleigh, Member of Provincial Parliament ( MPP ) for Halton in Ontario, was defeated by Anti-Pesticide members of the Liberal and New Democratic Party ( NDP ) caucuses.
In Ontario, the Liberal and New Democratic ( NDP ) Parties function as the POLITICAL SHIELDS for Anti-Pesticide Organizations.
The Chudleigh Bill was designed to AMEND the Pesticides Act which came into effect on April 22nd, 2009.
On May 9th, 2012, Mr. Chudleigh moved first reading his Bill 88, An Act to AMEND the Pesticides Act to provide for the use of pesticides for cosmetic purposes WITH A LICENCE.
It passed first reading.
According to Mr. Chudleigh, in the House on May 9th, 2012 ―
Basically, this bill ALLOWS A PROFESSIONAL APPLICATOR TO APPLY APPROVED PESTICIDES to control weeds or pests on your lawn or garden.
On May 30th, 2012, Anti-Pesticide Organizations FRANTICALLY sent a letter to ALL Ontario Members of Provincial Parliament ( MPPs ) urging them to OPPOSE the Chudleigh Bill.
Not surprisingly, the Liberals and NDP MPPs GANGED UP TO DEFEAT the Chudleigh Bill on its second reading on May 31st, 2012.
However, the Chudleigh Bill had a GREAT DEAL OF VALUE, for among other things, it BROUGHT TOGETHER THE GREAT SWELL OF THE PUBLIC who now think THE ORIGINAL 2009 PROHIBITION HAS GONE WAY TOO FAR.
The MAJORITY of Ontarians AGREE with Mr. Chudleigh, since according to a recent Ontario poll, MORE THAN HALF of Ontario residents believe that the provincial government DID NOT DO THE RIGHT THING by implementing Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION.
Ontario residents WOULD RATHER HAVE THE BAN SCRAPPED OR MODIFIED.
It should be noted that the Chudleigh Bill ONLY INCLUDED APPLICATION BY PROFESSIONAL APPLICATORS, and DID NOT include application of pest control products by residents/home-owners.
INDISPUTABLE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH shows that, as reported through Health Canada’s VAST TOXICOLOGY DATABASE, NO HARM WILL OCCUR when pest control products are used according to label directions.
The RISK ASSESSMENT of pest control products indicates that they are PRACTICALLY-NON-TOXIC.
Thankfully, Mr. Chudleigh AGREED ― and deserves CONGRATULATION.

Oppose Bill 88, Pesticides Amendment Act ( Licence for Cosmetic Purposes ), 2012
We ask you to vote against Bill 88, which would amend the Pesticides Act to reintroduce banned lawn and garden chemicals. Ontario’s world-class [ ?!?! ] cosmetic pesticide ban, as it now stands, protects both human health and the environment [ ?!?! ].
We fully support maintaining a comprehensive ban on the sale and cosmetic use of pesticides.
Since the legislation came into effect in 2009 …
1) Concentrations in urban streams of lawn chemicals such as 2,4-D, Dicamba and MCPP, were reduced by up to 97%. [ WRONG ! ]
[ On the issue of the Province of Ontario, the 2009 PROHIBITION of pest control products DEFINITELY DID NOT improve water quality in streams and rivers. For more than ten years, well BEFORE the 2009 PROHIBITION, there were CONSISTENTLY LOW LEVELS of pest control products in Ontario streams. ALMOST UNDETECTABLE LEVELS of pest control products were found in Ontario streams EVEN BEFORE the 2009 PROHIBITION. Both before and after the 2009 PROHIBITION, the presence of pest control products were measured in the PARTS PER TRILLION RANGE and WELL BELOW water quality guidelines. In fact, previous studies have shown that, for more than ten years, there have been CONSISTENTLY LOW LEVELS of pest control products in Ontario streams. The 2009 Ontario PROHIBITION did NOT protect the environment. ]

2) The third review of the health effects of pesticides, released in May of this year by Ontario College of Family Physicians, reconfirms that pesticides are harmful to reproductive and respiratory systems and neurodevelopmental behaviour. [ WRONG ! ]
[ Ontario College of Family Physicians is a DISCREDITED, RADICAL, and SCIENTIFICALLY IGNORANT Anti-Pesticide Organization. OCFP is a MERE TRADE ASSOCIATION, and it is NOT a science, research, or health organization. It is INDIRECTLY OPERATED as a PUBLIC INFORMATION SHIELD by Canadian Cancer Society and Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment. These organizations are presently UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR CHARITY FRAUD AND CONSPIRACY. Ontario’s approach to banning the cosmetic use of pesticides is the culmination of over twenty years of effort that began with local pesticide by-laws that withstood multiple legal challenges up to and including the Supreme Court of Canada.
That Court noted approval of the concepts of governments as « trustees of the environment » and applying the PRECAUTIONARY PRINCIPLE. [ WRONG ! ]
Given the multiple challenges we face of ongoing pollution emissions, and a wide range of toxic substances in our air, food, water and in multiple consumer products, we should take every opportunity to minimize or eliminate exposures to toxic substances that are unnecessary and easily eliminated.
The cosmetic use of pesticides falls squarely into this category and banning the use and sale of needless pesticides is an exemplary way to apply a PRECAUTIONARY APPROACH. [ WRONG ! ]
[ The Precautionary Principle was intended for use where science DOES NOT EXIST. The Precautionary Principle is MIS-USED TO SERVE THE AMBITIONS of Environmental and Anti-Pesticide Activists. With the Precautionary Principle, activists DO NOT HAVE TO PRESENT ANY EVIDENCE … they just have to ALLEGE SOMETHING IS SOMEHOW HARMFUL TO THE ENVIRONMENT. The Learning Disabilities Association of Canada ( LDAC ) supports a phase out, or ban, of non-essential uses of pesticides, and for use of alternative methods. [ ?!?! ]
This policy is based on the fact that children are more vulnerable to pesticides for a number of reasons [ WRONG ! ], and that there are important toxicity data gaps regarding the safety of pesticides in developing systems, including neurological development [ WRONG ! ].
[ Children Are NOT At Risk ! The safety assessments of pest control products by Pest Management Regulatory Agency of Heath Canada ( PMRA ) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ) DO take children into consideration. These assessments DO consider children’s physiology, behaviours, and habits while playing on treated grass. Moreover, there are NO valid reports of pest control product problems with children. In fact, MEDICATION is the leading cause of poisoning in children. Anti-Pesticide Activists ALLEGE that children are somehow MORE vulnerable to pest control products. This is a MYTH ! Anti-Pesticide Activists are DESPICABLE in their use of CHILDREN as WEAPONS OF COERCION and ULTIMATE TERROR in order to promote Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION and Organic Food. PESTICIDE BANS that are imposed under the PRETEXT of protecting children’s health is WRONG ! Pest control products are SCIENTIFICALLY-SAFE, CAUSE NO HARM, and are NO THREAT TO CHILDREN. Ontario College of Family Physicians ―
In 1999, 2004 and 2012, family physician researchers, associated with the Ontario College of Family Physicians and the six Ontario medical universities, have undertaken systematic reviews of the Pesticide literature on the impact of the environment on health.
Each review provided more and more evidence [ ?!?! ] to convince the family physicians of this province and across the country that a ban on the cosmetic use of pesticides was warranted. [ WRONG ! ]
The public trusts family doctors more than they trust those who lobby for the pesticide industry. [ ?!?! ]
MPPs should do the same. Strike down Bill 88.
[ Ontario College of Family Physicians ( OCFP ) is a mere trade association, and NOT a science, research, or health organization. Among the authors and reviewers of the review, there were doctors who were found guilty of professional mis-conduct over sexual activities, doctors whose license was suspended, and doctors who deny having reviewed the document. There is a « growing body of evidence » that some the authors and reviewers of the Anti-Pesticide Literature Review were UNETHICAL and UNPROFESSIONAL. The Anti-Pesticide Literature Review is INARGUABLY DISCREDITED. OCFP was NOT even in « The Information Loop » on issues regarding pest control products, and did not avail itself to the EXTENSIVE TOXICOLOGY DATABASE that is available from Health Canada. ]

We would oppose any proposed changes to the current law, as it is important to maintain the safety of our most vulnerable citizens as the most important priority above all. [ ?!?! ]
[ Children across North America, even in those jurisdictions with NO pesticide bans, are all protected since these products are applied at VERY LOW DOSES and represent NO THREAT TO CHILDREN. The SAFETY ASSESSMENT of pest control products takes into consideration CHILDREN’s physiology, behaviours, and habits WHILE PLAYING ON TREATED GRASS. Moreover, there are NO valid reports of problems with children, and there is NOT ONE KNOWN ILLNESS or DEATH from the proper use of pest control products used in the Urban Landscape. [ Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario ( RNAO ) was a PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT with the McGuinty Government in CONSPIRING TO PROHIBIT pest control products used in the Urban Landscape. Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION DESTROYED the Modern Professional Lawn Care Industry. The Ontario Professional Lawn Care Industry LOST OVER 500,000,000 DOLLARS, with UP TO 12,500 UNEMPLOYED. The Ontario PESTICIDE BAN DOES NOT WORK … and is a FARCE. Residents are obtaining products either from other provinces, or mostly from across the border in the United States. It is NOT illegal to own or possess these products, only to apply them. The mis-use of products remains ― thanks to PROHIBITION. The Toronto Environmental Alliance opposes Bill 88,s proposed changes to Ontario’s ban on the cosmetic use of pesticides.
TEA was actively involved in the Toronto by-law to restrict the use of pesticides, which was passed almost a decade ago.
We have even more proof now than we did back then to show the harmful impacts of toxic substances to human health and the environment. [ WRONG ! ]
Many companies are providing ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY NON-TOXIC PRODUCTS AND SERVICES to Ontarians and we applaud them for their green business leadership. [ ?!?! ]
Not only are they protecting the natural environment and keeping their employees safe, they are protecting customers ( and their neighbours ) from harmful toxins. [ ?!?! ]
It makes no sense to weaken the pesticide ban after such meaningful progress has been made to protect our health and the environment.
