The Story Of CHLOROTHALONIL ― Part 1 Of 3
CHLOROTHALONIL is the active ingredient found in a fungicide ( disease control product ) used in the Golf Course Industry.
In both Canada and the United States, DACONIL 2787 W-75 TURF CARE ( CHLOROTHALONIL ) was first registered on July 1st, 1967.
It was a broad-spectrum eradicant fungicide for the control of most foliar diseases if turf.
Thirteen years later, on December 24th, 1980, an improved version was registered, known as DACONIL 2787 FLOWABLE FUNGICIDE.
Thirty-five years later, in 2002, DACONIL 2787 W-75 TURF CARE was allowed to expire in Canada, although flowable formulations have continued to this day.
On July 19th, 2006, DACONIL ULTREX FUNGICIDE was first registered.
On February 9th, 2016, Pest Management Regulatory Agency of Health Canada ( PMRA ) invited the public to submit written comments on the « Re-Evaluation Note REV2016-06, CHLOROTHALONIL – Amendment To The Proposed Re-Evaluation Decision ».
Until April 11th, 2016, PMRA says it will consider the comments received before making a FINAL DECISION on CHLOROTHALONIL.
In essence, PMRA has PROPOSED TO LIMIT USE OF CHLOROTHALONIL ON TURF to a single time per year, and JUST FOR SNOW MOLD CONTROL.
PMRA has also proposed that OTHER USES OF CHLOROTHALONIL CONTINUE BE ALLOWED on asparagus, carrot, celery, cucurbits, ginseng, mushroom, parsnip, potato, strawberry and tomato.
Otherwise, what remains to be negotiated is THE TIME-FRAME FOR PHASE-OUT.

The BOGUS Urban Legend Against CHLOROTHALONIL
In 1982, the safety of CHLOROTHALONIL was questioned after the death of Lieutenant George Prior in September of that year. [ ?!?! ]
He was a thirty-year old flight officer, a frequent golfer, and presumably in good health.
On the second day of a three-day leave at the Army-Navy Country Club in Arlington, Virginia, Prior became suddenly and seriously ill.
Even before playing the last hole, Prior was complaining of a headache.
Later that night, he was feverish and nauseous, and had developed a rash.
Reports vary as to whether the rash developed on his back or across his stomach.
Four days later, Prior was admitted to Bethesda Naval Hospital, and his symptoms then included a temperature of 104½ degrees Fahrenheit and a body covered in blisters.
Less than two weeks after his admission to hospital, Prior was declared dead from a heart attack.
The Lieutenant’s affliction was diagnosed as « toxic epidermal necrolysis », or « scalded skin syndrome ».
This disease resembled a second-degree burn, with a loosening and peeling of large areas of the skin, as well as swelling and extreme tenderness.
Since CHLOROTHALONIL was sprayed on the golf course twice-per-week where Prior had played his game, the U.S. Navy pathologist Doctor Jonathan Lord concluded, ERRONEOUSLY, that CHLOROTHALONIL must somehow have been responsible for having triggered this otherwise rare and unknown disease. [ ?!?! ]
Lord’s « evidence » included speculation that a home fumigant, arbitrarily and erroneously deemed similar to CHLOROTHALONIL, had recently killed a Florida family. [ ?!?! ]

Beyond Pesticides Profited From The 1982 Prior Affair
The « urban legend » against CHLOROTHALONIL FALSELY ALLEGES that Prior had a « hypersensitivity » to CHLOROTHALONIL, leading a severe allergic reaction. [ ?!?! ]
Somehow, CHLOROTHALONIL became a toxic substance that burned the skin from eighty per cent of his body, and caused his major organs to fail. [ ?!?! ]
Prior’s widow filed a TWENTY MILLION DOLLAR LAWSUIT against the manufacturer, the Diamond Shamrock Chemical Company.
This lawsuit was SETTLED OUT OF COURT for an undisclosed sum of money.
Nonetheless, in 1988, a trial court entered JUDGEMENT IN FAVOUR OF THE MANUFACTURER.

Prior’s widow allegedly used the money to grant a « sizable » donation to the militant « National Coalition Against The Misuse Of Pesticides » ( a.k.a. « Beyond Pesticides » ).
« Beyond Pesticides » operates as an organization that is non-expert, profit-motivated, unethical, and conspires to recklessly and maliciously prohibit against pest control products used in the urban landscape.
« Beyond Pesticides » is operated by a group of truth-challenged-fanatics who are clearly NOT competent to express ANY opinion concerning pest control products.
Those who operate « Beyond Pesticides » include … • a non-expert duck farm operator • a non-expert indigent goat herder • a non-expert native Indian movement organizer • a non-expert marginal organic lawn care operator • a non-expert organic produce distributor • a non-expert zoologist.
« Beyond Pesticides » has expertise in fund-raising and profit-making, but has NO expertise in science or research.
The primary concerns of « Beyond Pesticides » is business, cash-flow, profit, and celebrity.

• Millions of golfers are ostensibly « exposed » to a variety of chemicals on a repeated basis throughout the season. Incredibly, some non-hygienic players frequently put balls and tees in their mouths in order to clean them.

Some of our industry educators and consultants still RECKLESSLY ADVOCATE this « urban legend » as gospel.
For example, trade associations, like Canadian Golf Superintendents Association, have actually organized seminars that promote this Urban Legend Against CHLOROTHALONIL.
And the legend continues to be influenced by radical groups that have sworn to destroy the golf industry.
In a recent article entitled « Poisoned Fairways », the « Sierra Club » had claimed that « golf is the sleeping giant threatening the environment ». ( See reference below. )

All other components of the proposed re-evaluation decision for CHLOROTHALONIL remain as originally described in PRVD2011-14.
Based on the revised occupational and residential risk assessments for CHLOROTHALONIL, the PMRA has determined that under the revised conditions of use, some AGRICULTURAL USES OF CHLOROTHALONIL DO NOT PRESENT UNACCEPTABLE RISKS TO HUMAN HEALTH.
These uses include asparagus, carrot, celery ( seedbeds only ), cucurbits, ginseng, mushroom, parsnip, potato, strawberry, tomato, TURF ( FOR CONTROL OF SNOW MOLD ONLY ).
As a condition of continued registration of these uses, NEW RISK-REDUCTION MEASURES are proposed to be included on the labels of pest control products containing CHLOROTHALONIL.
Based on the human health risk assessment, the PMRA is proposing to CANCEL the following uses of CHLOROTHALONIL ―

cherry ( sweet and sour )
chickpea
cole crops
conifers ( outdoor and nursery beds )
corn, sweet
cranberry
evening primrose

Next Steps
This amended proposed re-evaluation decision is a consultation document.
The PMRA is inviting stakeholders to submit comments on « Re-Evaluation Note REV2016-06, CHLOROTHALONIL – Amendment To The Proposed Re-Evaluation Decision », as well as detailed proposals to further refine the risk assessment and mitigate risks.
The PMRA will accept comments and proposals for a period of 60 days from the date of publication of « Re-Evaluation Note REV2016-06, CHLOROTHALONIL – Amendment To The Proposed Re-Evaluation Decision ».
Before making a final re-evaluation decision on CHLOROTHALONIL, the PMRA will consider all comments received in response to the previously published Proposed Re-evaluation Decision, along with any comments or proposals submitted in response to this amended proposed re-evaluation decision.
A science-based approach will be applied in making a final decision on CHLOROTHALONIL.
The PMRA will then publish the Re-Evaluation Decision that will include the decision and the reasons for it, a summary of the comments and proposals received on both this document and PRVD2011-14, and the PMRA’s response to these comments and/or proposals.
If NO proposals to refine the risk assessment are received, or if those received are inadequate, then the PMRA will proceed to FINALIZE THE RE-EVALUATION DECISION TO CANCEL THE CHLOROTHALONIL USES specified in this document.

Another Urban Legend ― Kissing Balls For Luck In The World Of Golf
Let’s finish this report with an amusing golf story.
For a long time, the word « balls » has been as used as the basis for « double entendre » jokes.
One type of joke involved the punch line about « kissing balls for luck ».
Over the years, it has been associated with several professional sports stars, like golf legend Arnold Daniel Palmer ( born in 1929 ).
With a nickname like « The King », in the 1960s, he was golf’s most popular star.
In the mid-1960s, an « urban legend » was born on « The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson ».
Since nearly all recordings of this program made prior to 1972 were subsequently destroyed, definite proof of this legend does not exist.
The legend goes that during a « Tonight Show » appearance, Johnny Carson asked Arnold Palmer if he had any GOOD LUCK RITUALS.
We have attempted to re-create that interview.
Carson purportedly began the conversation with one of two questions ―
Johnny Carson ― « Is there anything your wife does to bring you good luck ?!?! » or « Does your wife kiss your balls before you go to play ?!?! »
Arnold Palmer ― « Yes, my wife kisses my balls. »
