Ontario Farm Fined $ 2,000 for Pesticides Violation
St. Thomas – A farm was fined $2,000 for applying a pesticide that caused adverse effect to bee hives, contrary to the Pesticides Act.
DeBackere Farms Inc. is located in the Municipality of Central Elgin. The farm utilized the pollination services of a beekeeper. A total of 24 honeybee hives were placed on the farm 150m from a corn field.
A pesticide application to the corn field was performed with Sevin XLR Carbaryl insecticide liquid suspension. The Sevin XLR pesticide label contains a "Bee Caution" requiring that measures be taken to notify beekeepers if application of the product is made during foraging periods.
The beekeeper did not receive notice of the application and as a result, 14 of 24 hives suffered significant bee deaths and 3 hives required intervention to prevent the same consequence.
The company was fined a total of $2,000 plus victim fine surcharges totaling $500 and was given 60 days to pay the fine.
