HRM council resurrects just-banned weed killer
Wed, Jun 8 – 7:01 AM
Halifax-area residents now have another weapon in their battle against dandelions.
Regional council voted 17-7 Tuesday to allow people to use chelated iron herbicide on their lawns. It’s also known as FeHEDTA and is sold in stores as Scotts EcoSense Weed B Gon and Neudorff Fiesta Lawn Weed Killer.
Council had voted 11-10 on May 24 not to allow the weed killer, but it turned out council didn’t have the authority to ban it. It’s on the province’s list of approved herbicides, and the city can’t make bylaws that contradict provincial regulations.
Coun. Steve Adams (Spryfield-Herring Cove) had asked that council revisit the issue at Tuesday’s meeting. Some councillors said they’re still concerned about possible negative environmental effects of the weed killer, while others said they’d like clarification on the question of compliance with provincial regulations.
