Ohio Senate To Consider Resolution On Propoxur

Comments COLUMBUS, Ohio — Lawmakers unanimously passed a resolution calling for the emergency use of an industrial-strength pesticide to deal with bedbugs.
The Ohio House of Representatives voted on the resolution sponsored by State Rep. Dale Mallory, a Cincinnati Democrat, urging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to let the state use Propoxur to battle bedbugs in homes.
“An emergency exemption for the use of Propoxur to control bedbugs is warranted because of the prevalence of control failures with other existing labeled insecticides in Ohio,” Mallory said.
Federal officials believe Propoxur causes cancer, but supporters of its use say that bedbugs have not developed a resistance to the pesticide, which is used for some agricultural and other uses.
Bedbugs are parasites that feed on the blood of humans or other warm-blooded animals, and a recent state survey found 92 percent of Ohio’s local health agencies have received bedbug reports.
The resolution next goes to the Ohio Senate for consideration.
