ONTARIO PCS : Progressive Conservatives in Kingston are gearing up for the next Provincial Election.
February 17, 2011
PROGRESSIVE CONSERVATIVES IN KINGSTON ARE GEARING UP FOR THE NEXT PROVINCIAL ELECTION.
NEWSWATCH'S ERIN HOWE HAS MORE ON THE CANDIDATES.
ONTARIO P.C. RIDING ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT BILL GIGUERE IS GETTING READY FOR STRONG ATTENDANCE AT HIS PARTY'S NOMINATION MEETING SATURDAY – THE FIRST TIME IN EIGHT YEARS THERE'S BEEN A CONTEST.
GIGUERE: "WE'RE ALL VERY EXCITED ABOUT IT, AND THE CANDIDATES ARE EXCITED ABOUT IT, AND AS I SAY, WE ANTICIPATE A VERY LARGE TURN OUT FOR THIS."
THE PREVIOUS P.C. CANDIDATE, DR. JOHN RAPIN, HAD BEEN ACCLAIMED LAST ELECTION – AND IT'S BEEN MORE THAN 25 YEARS SINCE KINGSTON HAD A PROGRESSIVE CONSERVATIVE M.P.P. . . . MAKING WHAT FOLLOWS THIS WEEKEND'S P.C. VOTE CRITICAL.
GIGUERE: "THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS PARTICULAR NOMINATION MEETING IS THAT THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT WE WILL HAVE HAD A PEOPLE'S CHOICE CANDIDATE RUNNING AGAINST THE OPPOSITION."
MARK BAIN IS ONE OF THE TWO CANDIDATES IN THE RUNNING TO REPRESENT THE PROVINCIAL TORIES.
HE HAS SERVED IN BOTH THE PRIVATE AND PUBLIC SECTORS.
BAIN HAD RUN IN THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION LAST FALL, AND SAYS DURING THAT CAMPAIGN, HE LEARNED OF PROBLEMS HE SAYS HIS SKILL SET WOULD HELP TO SOLVE.
BAIN: "I CAME ACROSS SENIORS THAT NEED HELP IN THEIR HOMES, AND WORKING FAMILIES THAT NEEDED SOME SUPPORT AND HELP IN THEIR HOMES, AND I QUICKLY REALIZED THAT THE PROVINCIAL SCENE IS WHERE I NEEDED TO GO."
CANDIDATE RODGER JAMES IS ALSO EXCITED TO BE IN THE RUNNING TO REPRESENT THE RIDING.
HE'S OWNED A VARIETY OF BUSINESSES FOR MORE THAN THIRTY YEARS – WORKING IN FINANCIAL SERVICES FOR THE LAST ELEVEN.
HE SAYS HE DEALS FIRST HAND WITH PEOPLE HAVING A NUMBER OF ISSUES THAT ALL ADD UP – AND WANTS TO BE ABLE TO HELP.
JAMES: "HIGHER TAXES, LACK OF ASSISTANCE IN VARIOUS AREAS, AND TO THE POINT OF VIEW OF ACTUALLY BEING HIT WITH TAXES ON THEIR INVESTMENTS WHERE THEY ARE SAVING UP FOR RETIREMENT."
THOUGH IT WILL BE A FEW MORE DAYS BEFORE A CHOICE IS MADE, ONE THING IS ALREADY CLEAR IN THIS RACE.
BAIN: "IT'S AN EXCITING TIME FOR THIS PARTY, IT'S AN EXCITING TIME FOR KINGSTON."
JAMES: "I THINK IT GENERATES ENTHUSIASM AND WE NEED MORE PEOPLE TO GET INVOLVED AND TO VOTE."
