During The 1930s …
The early scientific generation of pest control products with mercurials & lead arsenate ―
Throughout the decade, a combination of Semesan ( chlorophenol mercury ) & thiram, named Tersan OM, started to become the standard control for turf diseases.
Lead arsenate was used for « poisoning » turf for 5 years for the control of beetles & grubs ― the application rate was 100 pounds per 3,000 square feet, 3-inches deep.
Most creeping bentgrass varieties that had been commonly used by the golf course maintenance industry were vegetatively propagated.
With revolutionary seed mixtures, bentgrass over-seeding on putting greens became an old & accepted management practice ― aeration holes & slicer marks provided an ideal seed-bed for the bentgrass seed ― visible progress with bentgrass establishment was expected to take at least three to five years.
Turfgrass disease control programs consisted primarily of dew removal & applications of hydrated lime.
Sprayers, which were equipped with spray booms or guns, became the standard method of applying fungicides to turf ― previously, sand or fertilizer served as carriers, instead of water.

During The 1920s …
The early scientific generation of pest control products with mercurials & Bordeaux mixture ―
By the end of the decade, Bordeaux mixture fungicide, for brown patch, a combination of copper sulfate & lime, was abandoned & replaced by mercurials ― chlorophenyl mercury ( Semesan ) & other mercurials were the standard disease controls for brown patch & dollar spot on bentgrass putting greens.
By the end of the decade, chlorophenyl mercury ( Semesan ) & other mercurials were the standard disease controls for brown patch & dollar spot on bentgrass putting greens.
On putting greens, fertilizer-fungicide combinations were being concocted for the control of brown patch disease ― cottonseed meal, Milorganite, poultry manure, & soybean meal were mixed with mercurials.
On putting greens, the best method of controlling dandelions was to impregnate the crown of the plant with sulphuric acid ― weeds were exceptionally difficult to control because manure was often used as a source of fertilizer.
For the insecticical control of white grubs, the injection of carbon disulfide was suggested for the first time on turf, to be poured directly into each grub burrow with a funnel.
Experiments showed that white grubs could be successfully controlled with either lead arsenate ― turf areas that were treated were « poisoned » enough to remain grub-proof for a period of five years.
Ammonium sulfate, although high-priced, was becoming accepted as a fertilizer ― experiments had showed that it was not only conducive to turfgrass growth, but it was also very effective in discouraging the invasion of weeds.
Organic fertilizers were also used on fairways, such as ── barnyard & stable manures, bone meal, cottonseed meal, dried blood, fish scrap, & tankage.
The granular natural organic fertilizer Milorganite was derived from the bio-solids left over from waste-water treatment in the city of Milwaukee ― its great selling feature was that it did not burn turf ( unlike ammonium sulfate ).
Jacobsen introduced the first ever « cast aluminum power greens mower » for use in the golf course maintenance industry.

The « gang mower » with « 30-inch reel mowers » was produced by Worthington.
Advances, Innovations, & Trends – The History Of The Golf Industry
During The 1900s …
Putting greens consisted of red fescue & Kentucky bluegrass.

Turfgrass disease control programs consisted primarily of dew removal & applications of hydrated lime.
