According to EHHI …
Environment & Human Health Inc ( EHHI ) is releasing its new [ lunatжc ] report Synthetic Turf : Industry’s Claims Versus The Science.
Shredded waste tires have been sold as crumb rubber in-fill for artificial/synthetic grass fields, and as rubber mulch to surface our youngest children’s playgrounds, before testing was done to see if the material was safe for these uses.
Industry continues to claim that there are studies that prove the artificial/synthetic grass fields and rubber mulch playgrounds are safe.
If no one actually reads and analyzes these studies, then there is no one to dispute these claims.
EHHI has spent the past year carefully reading these studies and summarizing their findings in an easily accessible report for all to read and understand.
Many of the studies that the industry has cited claim the artificial/synthetic grass fields are safe, actually show numerous heavy metals, chemicals, and carcinogens in the samples tested.
Although artificial/synthetic grass industry admits that many studies find numerous toxic chemicals, they claim that the levels are too low to be dangerous to human health.
Yet the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences ( NIEHS ) reports that even when there is low-level exposure to an individual chemical that might not cause cancer, when many low-level chemicals act together they can indeed cause cancer.
This important finding emerged from an international task force of more than 170 cancer scientists, known as the Halifax Project, who collaboratively assessed the carcinogenic potential of low-dose exposures to chemical mixtures in the environment.
Lead was found in every study that looked for it.
One study found lead in one field to be 500 to 1000 times the lead concentration of the other fields tested.
This shows how variable the samples of crumb rubber can be, and why one study sample cannot be assumed to be the norm for all samples or for all fields.
Benzothiazole ( BZT ), an eye, skin, and respiratory irritant, was found to be emitted in nearly all the air samples tested and was also found leaching from crumb rubber samples.
Because of the variability of the fields, one study called for the testing of every artificial/synthetic grass field to measure its risk to players, especially children.
Many cautioned that more research was needed before any conclusions could be made about the safety or harmful effects of crumb rubber or artificial/synthetic grass.
EHHI found the studies did not examine the important issue of the synergy of being exposed to many chemicals at the same time, and what this could mean for the health of those who play on those fields.
Nor did they find them to measure the health impacts to children with asthma or allergies when they play either on artificial/synthetic grass fields or playgrounds surfaced with waste tire rubber mulch.
Additionally, the studies did not consider additional exposures that happen when crumb rubber pellets migrate from the fields into cars, school-rooms, and homes.
Crumb rubber pellets are carried off the field in players’ socks, shoes, hair, and ears.
The one indoor field that was tested found high levels of toxins in the air above the field — yet this indoor field was only tested for 25 minutes.
That study recommended that indoor fields need additional testing and that all indoor artificial/synthetic grass fields need to be adequately ventilated in order to protect human health.
Despite industry’s claims that artificial/synthetic grass fields with crumb rubber are safe, many towns and schools have become skeptical of these claims.
Because of this skepticism, many are opting for alternative in-fills, even though most of the alternative in-fills are more expensive and none have had independent testing.
EHHI maintains that there is no safer surface for athletic play than natural grass.
If towns and schools would take half of the money they put into artificial/synthetic grass fields and invest instead in state-of-the-art natural turfgrass fields, our children, athletes, and our planet, would be healthier.

The Risks With Artificial⁄Synthetic Grass
Description
OVERVIEW
EHHI’s report on artificial/synthetic grass calls attention to growing concerns about children’s exposures to ground-up rubber tires used as in-fill material in artificial/synthetic grass fields. Crumb rubber is used in artificial/synthetic grass and as playground mulch, despite potential health hazards, especially under high temperatures.
The Risks With Artificial⁄Synthetic Grass
Migration
According to the EHHI lunatжc brochure …
Artificial/synthetic grass fields are made of plastic grass in-filled with 40,000 shredded waste tires known as « crumb rubber ». The crumb rubber in-fill is put in the fields to help the fake green plastic blades stand up like grass and soften the fields. There is no barrier between the rubber crumbs and the athletes who play on the fields. The rubber crumbs get into the players’ shoes, socks, clothing, and even into their mouths, ears and hair. The crumb rubber gets tracked [ i.e. MIGRATES ] off the fields and into cars, schools and homes.
Because the crumb rubber pieces are so small there is nothing keeping them in place and they migrate off the fields. Athletes complain that crumb rubber pieces get in their eyes, hair, and ears, adding to their toxic exposures. As well, the crumb rubber gets tracked [ i.e. MIGRATES ] into school dormitories, cars and homes on players’ shoes and socks.
For example, prior to a Pittsburgh Steelers – Buffalo Bills game, excess [ i.e. MIGRATING ] black rubber pellets had to be scraped off the field. The game was delayed for around seven minutes, and was quickly dubbed « pelletgate » on social media. Batavia Turf Instant Lawns owner Craig Yunker says artificial/synthetic grass fields produce hazardous waste, and the incident raised concerns about player safety.

The Risks With Artificial⁄Synthetic Grass
Toxins & Safety
OVERVIEW
According to the EHHI lunatжc brochure …
Artificial/synthetic grass fields are maintained with additional TOXINS ― chemical disinfectants, flame-retardants, and anti-microbials. Because artificial/synthetic grass fields are made out of petro-chemical products, they are highly flammable. As a result, many fields now contain flame retardants, and they too are TOXIC.
Because many students have been getting a serious staph infection known as MRSA from the fields, most fields now contain anti-microbials which are often TOXIC. For example, in the state of Texas, a higher rate of staph infections among high school students ― many times the national average ― because of artificial/synthetic grass sports fields. Nonetheless, according to Penn State University, artificial/synthetic grass is not a breeding ground for staph bacteria. Sunlight appears to be the best disinfectant. However, for indoor use of artificial/synthetic grass, treatments can reduce the bacteria.
Both the US Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission ( CPSC ) no longer support safety claims for artificial/synthetic grass fields or playground rubber mulch. Both the CPSC and the EPA say they do not know enough to claim that artificial/synthetic grass fields are safe. The EPA, the CPSC, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ) are investigating crumb rubber for its health effects. So far, EHHI has not found studies to prove the artificial/synthetic grass fields are safe.
Scientists at Mount Sinai’s Children’s Environmental Health Center have recommended ways to keep you and your family safe while using artificial/synthetic grass.

The Risks With Artificial⁄Synthetic Grass
Cancers
OVERVIEW
According to the EHHI lunatжc brochure …
There is mounting evidence that the rubber tire in-fill material can be CARCENOGENIC. There could be a health risks with artificial⁄synthetic grass for those students and athletes who play on these fields. Many of the studies that the industry has cited claim the artificial/synthetic grass fields are safe, actually show numerous heavy metals, chemicals, and CARCINOGENS in the samples tested.
CANCER cases among athletes who have played on synthetic turf continue to grow. As the CANCER rates continue to grow, there is surprisingly no governmental agency collecting the health data on the CANCER and respiratory cases connected with playing on artificial⁄synthetic grass fields. These CANCER cases are instead being tracked and collected by a private citizen who reports that the CANCER cases are mainly lymphomas and leukemias ― both are CANCERS heavily influenced by environmental toxins. In addition to that evidence, the majority of CANCERS are among soccer goal-keepers ― the most heavily exposed players on a soccer team.
Many of the studies that the industry has cited claim the artificial/synthetic grass fields are safe, actually show numerous heavy metals, chemicals, and CARCINOGENS in the samples tested.
Crumb rubber contains 92 chemicals, of which 11 are CARCINOGENIC. Ninety-two ( 92 ) chemicals were found in the 14 samples of shredded used tires analyzed. Half the chemicals had not been tested by government, and those that had some government testing contained 11 CARCINOGENS and 20 chemicals that can irritate skin, eyes and lungs. Why do coaches and parents allow their children to play on these fields when they know they contain toxic chemicals ?!?! One answer is that industry’s claims of safety have drowned out scientists and parents who claim the fields pose a danger.
The Risks With Artificial⁄Synthetic Grass – Cancers
Connecticut Study
Researchers concluded that ALL CANCER risks with artificial⁄synthetic grass were NEGLIGIBLE, even though the study noted that CANCER RISKS were found to be slightly higher for children ages twelve and older.
Nonetheless, according to the EHHI lunatжc brochure, because the artificial/synthetic grass industry has claimed that the Connecticut Department of Health study shows that artificial/synthetic grass fields were SAFE, EHHI felt it important to closely analyze the actual study to see what it really said. The study only looked at the health risks with artificial⁄synthetic grass to those 12 years and up ― yet many younger children also play on these fields. On careful reading, you will see the flaws in the study and all their stated limitations. It is hard to believe that the researchers could declare that their data showed the fields were safe.

University Of Washington
University of Washington assistant soccer coach Amy Griffin noticed abnormally high rates of CANCER in athletes who played on artificial/synthetic grass. As of 2017, 155 are blood CANCERS or 62.5 per cent. Of the 196 soccer players with CANCER, 115 are goal-keepers, or 59 per cent. The only athletes in this informal count were those who knew to call Amy Griffin. There is still no government agency tracking CANCERS among athletes who have played on artificial/synthetic grass.
The Risks With Artificial⁄Synthetic Grass – Cancers
Yale University
Researchers conducted a chemical analysis that found 12 carcinogens in the artificial/synthetic grass tested. High temperatures cause crumb rubber in-fill to outgas at a higher rate, which also poses an additional the health risks with artificial⁄synthetic grass to those who play on these fields in the summer.

The Risks With Artificial⁄Synthetic Grass
Inhalation
OVERVIEW
According to the EHHI lunatжc brochure …
As artificial⁄synthetic grass fields get used, the crumb rubber breaks down and creates a dust that contains carcinogenic chemicals that are easily inhaled. The dust from the rubber crumbs contains carcinogens and can be INHALED into the deepest sections of the lungs. Once in the lungs, the toxins can be distributed throughout the body.
As the artificial/synthetic grass fields heat up, the chemicals in the fields volatilize, creating a greater exposure risk for players. Heat causes chemicals to outgas more quickly. This means that in the warm weather the toxic chemicals in artificial/synthetic grass fields become even more likely to be INHALED by those who play on these fields. When athletes play sports, they often INHALE faster and more deeply, adding to their toxic exposures.
In Spain, the volatilization of hazardous organic chemicals in surfaces containing recycled rubber tires is being investigated.

The Risks With Artificial⁄Synthetic Grass
Heat Issues
OVERVIEW
Municipalities are raising questions about extremely HIGH temperatures on the playing fields when the weather is HOT and sunny.
According to the EHHI lunatжc brochure …
Artificial/synthetic grass fields get VERY HOT in the summer and pose a danger. Many schools, towns and sport camps use their synthetic grass fields in the summer months. Synthetic grass fields get MUCH HOTTER than natural turfgrass fields, and it is important for coaches and parents to be aware of this fact. Synthetic grass fields get 60 to 70 degrees HOTTER than the outside air. This EXCESS HEAT makes these fields potentially very dangerous. The University of Arkansas measured the fields to be anywhere from 173 degrees Fahrenheit to as high as 199 degrees Fahrenheit [ 78 to 92 degrees Celsius ] to when the outside air was 98 degrees.
Natural turfgrass fields get a few degrees HOTTER than the outside air, but artificial/synthetic grass fields get 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit HOTTER than the outside air. This EXCESS HEAT makes these fields potentially very dangerous. Athletes can get dehydrated and even suffer HEAT STROKE while playing on them. Small children are even at a higher risk.
Artificial/synthetic grass fields are largely unusable during warm days because of high temperatures. Practicing on an artificial/synthetic grass field may increase the incidence of HEAT STROKE, muscle cramping, and overall athlete fatigue. Scientists at Columbia University who analyzed satellite thermal images of New York City the past two summers concluded that artificial/synthetic grass fields were up to 60 degrees Fahrenheit HOTTER than grass fields.
There is no safer surface for athletic play than natural turfgrass. If towns and schools would take half of the money they put into artificial/synthetic grass fields and invest instead in state-of-the-art natural turfgrass fields, our children, athletes and our planet would be healthier.
Scientists at Mount Sinai’s Children’s Environmental Health Center have recommend ways to keep people safe from HEAT.

The Risks With Artificial⁄Synthetic Grass
Concussions
OVERVIEW
According to the EHHI lunatжc brochure …
–
Artificial/synthetic grass fields are a danger for CONCUSSIONS unless they are continually refilled with crumb rubber. Synthetic grass fields deteriorate over time, and get harder as the crumb rubber in-fill compacts and migrates off the fields. The belief that artificial/synthetic grass does not need on-going maintenance is a myth. In fact, to make fields safe for head injuries, additional toxic crumb rubber must be added continually.
Grounds-keepers and others are being urged to treat artificial/synthetic grass fields more regularly and responsibly as a critical step toward avoiding wide-spread HEAD TRAUMA. Helmet technology is an area of great attention and investment, and artificial/synthetic grass surfaces deserve the same attention.

Europe’s Concerns
OVERVIEW
According to the EHHI lunatжc brochure, European studies from Sweden, Italy, and Spain all concur that artificial⁄synthetic grass fields are dangerous. All of these studies identify the cancer risk in synthetic fields and recommend that there be no further construction of artificial⁄synthetic grass fields containing rubber tire crumbs in their countries. Sweden considers rubber tire crumbs to be hazardous and recommends that no new fields containing them be installed, Italy considers the rubber tire crumbs to be carcinogenic, and Spain wants them regulated because of their risks to health.
Conversely, European Chemicals Agency ( ECHA ) has evaluated the risk of substances in recycled rubber that is used in artificial⁄synthetic grass on sports pitches. Based on the evidence, ECHA has concluded that the concern for players on these pitches, including children, and for workers who install and maintain them, is VERY LOW. ECHA will update its evaluation as and when new information becomes available.

Alternatives
OVERVIEW
According to the EHHI lunatжc brochure, as more people become aware that crumb rubber could pose a danger to health, the artificial/synthetic grass industry has begun to offer other in-fills — but are they safe ?!?! As parents become more concerned about the potential health risks that crumb rubber poses to their children, the industry is advising many towns and schools to pay more and purchase ALTERNATIVE IN-FILLS. ALTERNATIVE IN-FILLS have not been independently tested for their health effects. Towns and schools have an obligation to have their children and students play on a safe surface — and there is no safer surface than natural grass.

Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Home-owners who opt for artificial/synthetic grass run the risk of a 1400-dollar fine for breaking the city landscaping rules. The ban is rooted in issues involving the product’s lack of permeability, storm water run-off, impact to city services such as snow clearing, and possible impacts to ecosystems.
The Risks With Artificial⁄Synthetic Grass – Prohibitions
California, USA – Prohibitions Stopped State-Wide
The state has decided that cities and counties would be barred from banning artificial/synthetic grass and drought-tolerant landscapes on residential properties. Law-makers have stated that Californians should continue to be allowed to spend their own hard-earned money to invest in water-efficient technologies and protect precious water resources. Banning artificial/synthetic grass on a home-owner’s private property, and fining them for trying to do the right thing for the environment, sends the wrong message.

The Risks With Artificial⁄Synthetic Grass
Natural Turfgrass On Path To Extinction
According to observers, anti-pesticide prohibition has made it impossible to nurse damaged NATURAL TURFGRASS sports fields back to health. It’s worth pointing out that every pesticide prohibited by local governments has been previously approved by scientists at the federal government’s regulatory agencies. With no way to save NATURAL TURFGRASSES that become invaded by weeds and destroyed by insects, the sensible solution has been to switch to artificial⁄synthetic grass. NATURAL TURFGRASS are on the path to extinction. Artificial/synthetic grass costs more to install, but delivers substantially more playing time. The risk of picking up a staph infection while playing on artificial/synthetic grass is quite remote … and even less remote, in fact, as the risk posed by regulated, safe, and effective pesticides when properly and responsibly used. Nonetheless, observers expect many more fields to go from NATURAL TURFGRASS to artificial⁄synthetic grass in the years to come.
