An ordinance in Saint Peters, Missouri requires that A MINIMUM OF 50 PERCENT OF ALL YARD AREAS SHALL BE COMPRISED OF TURFGRASS.

Here is an excerpt from the ordinance ―

Article VI : Supplementary Regulations

Section 405.390

Landscaping and Screening

Residential Districts.

It shall be at the discretion of the individual property owners to landscape their lots; however, at any given time the following provisions shall apply :

All landscaping shall be properly maintained according to City ordinances presently in effect.

A MINIMUM OF FIFTY PER CENT ( 50% ) OF ALL YARD AREAS SHALL BE COMPRISED OF TURFGRASS.

Trees shall not be planted within six ( 6 ) feet of a property line in the side and rear yard.

The individual property owner shall be responsible for such maintenance.

Saint Peters is a city in the State of Missouri, with a population of over 52,000.

The ordinance punishes home-owners who do not grow enough turfgrass to please local regulators with up to 500-dollar fines and 10 days in jail for every day the home-owners have inadequate turfgrass.

When the home-owners asked city officials for an exemption, they were denied and ordered to plant the grass in locations officials could see in a drive-by inspection.
