LAWRENCE, Kan. — Two people are dead after an incident at MagnaGro International in Lawrence. Another person is in critical condition.
Emergency crews were called to the Lawrence fertilizer company at around 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The crews were informed that at least one person had fallen into a tank.
The location at 600 E. 22nd Street is just across the street from Haskell Indian Nations University.
Several crews have been working at the plant since the incident. A hazardous materials team came to the scene in protective suits, but members later determined there had been no release of any dangerous substances into the atmosphere.
The names of the injured people are being withheld pending notification of family members.
Resident Emily Stakley said she was surprised to learn what the facility is. MagnaGro is a place where fertilizers are mixed for organic growing.
“I didn’t even know. I believe it was a fertilizer company is what I heard. We didn’t know. We just thought it was warehouses,” she said.
