Coquitlam’s Friggin’ Rose Garden Should Die
On March 5th, 2012, in the City of Coquitlam, British Columbia, Councillor Bev Welsh had the TEMERITY to ask for an EXCEPTION STATUS for the CENTENNIAL ROSE GARDEN, a local tourist attraction and wedding venue that boasts 800 plants and 60 varieties of roses.
Coquitlam is currently proposing a NEEDLESS, SENSELESS, and MALICIOUS PROHIBITION against pest control products used in the Urban Landscape.
If Coquitlam is somehow concerned about the use of so-called « potential carcinogens » for the purposes of the mere cosmetic enhancement for the appearance of lawns, it should also be concerned about the alleged deadly effects of pesticide-treated rose gardens.
In other PROHIBITION-STRICKEN jurisdictions, cities like Windsor, Ontario, have found it IMPOSSIBLE to maintain its ROSE GARDENS WITHOUT THE USE OF CONVENTIONAL PEST CONTROL PRODUCTS.
Rose gardens represent the BEST EXAMPLE of THE FAILURE OF ORGANIC PESTICIDE-FREE MAINTENANCE and the RIDICULOUSNESS of Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION.
Coquitlam’s councillors should COME SEE Windsor, Ontario, with its DEAD rose gardens, and its GARBAGE DUMP green spaces.
The DEMISE of Windsor’s rose gardens represents THE CATASTROPHIC CARNAGE CAUSED BY ANTI-PESTICIDE PROHIBITION.
The SAME fate awaits Coquitlam.
Rose gardens WILL DIE, and dandelions will be RAMPANT.
It is now LUDICROUS for Windsor to maintain its claim of being the « City of Roses ».
Observers have suggested that Windsor now be called …
The City of DEAD Roses

The City of Dandelions with NO Roses
By 2011, the City of Windsor had reduced its rose gardens by more than 50 per cent directly because of the 2009 Ontario Pesticides Ban Act.
It is expected that ALL Roses will be ENTIRELY REMOVED within two years.
WINDSOR COULD NOT MAINTAIN ROSES ORGANICALLY … PEST CONTROL PRODUCTS WERE ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED.
Coquitlam’s Own Friggin’ Rose Gardens Should Also Die and Disappear.
In fact, if/when Coquitlam IMPOSES PROHIBITION, the Professional Lawn Care Industry MUST DEMAND THAT ALL EXCEPTIONS TO PROHIBITION BE RESCINDED.
In essence, Coquitlam must PROHIBIT ALL conventional pest control products from uses that include agriculture, forestry, golf, mosquito control, nursery, sod production, sports fields, AND rose gardens.
Since CENTENNIAL ROSE GARDEN is a source of income for Coquitlam, of course the city councillors have ABSOLUTELY NO SCRUPLES regarding the use of pest control products … when it suits THEM !
IRONICALLY … rose gardens required the VERY SAME INGREDIENTS that are needed to control pests in turf maintenance programs.
IRONICALLY … Professional Lawn Care maintenance requires LESS PESTICIDE-INPUTS than rose gardens.
If it is safe for children to touch and hold pesticide-treated roses, it is also safe for them to walk and play on pesticide-treated lawns.
If Coquitlam wants to DESTROY the Professional Lawn Care Industry with its Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION, then it should also allow for the DESTRUCTION of its rose gardens.
