This is because leaders of trade associations are absolute FAILURES with their POLICY-MAKING & PUBLIC AFFAIRS LOBBYING.

These AMATEURISH & INEPT industry-leaders only pay lip service to the importance of protecting superintendent & their facilities, & will go no further than writing worthless responses, creating pointless position papers, & sending ineffective letters of complaint to government officials who already hate & despise the golf industry. 

~

These leaders & their trade associations have NO CREDIBILITY IN POLICY-MAKING & PUBLIC AFFAIRS LOBBYING regarding issues like pest control products. 

~

Even worse, the industry-leaders’ standard strategy for handling HATE-SPEECH has been to PAY NO ATTENTION to these threats. 

~

Incredibly, some industry-leaders have become ACOLYTES of those who conspire to annihilate the « TURF INDUSTRY », & its businesses, its assets, & its customers. 

~

Some IDIOTIC industry-leaders have actually adopted the policy to publicly SUPPORT HARMFUL-PROHIBITIONS against conventional pest control products needed to protect the urban landscape.

The paying-members of trade associations must ask themselves the following question  …

Are We Better Off Than We Were A Decade Ago ?

The answer is « NO ». 

~

Leaders of trade associations have been FAILURES with their POLICY-MAKING & PUBLIC AFFAIRS LOBBYING.

They have failed to make ANY correct decisions. 

~

They are COWARDS, they do not care, & they can NO LONGER BE TRUSTED.

Trust No One In The Associations

They operate trade associations like IDIOTS.

They are responsible for FRAGMENTING the « TURF INDUSTRY » at a time when unity must be paramount.

A NATIONAL LOBBY GROUP must be mandated to take action on behalf of the entire « TURF INDUSTRY », & strike back & respond against ALL ANTI-PESTICIDE & ANTI-GOLF HATE-SPEECH, as well as HARMFUL-PROHIBITIONS.

In the past, some trade associations have made some attempts with POLICIES & LOBBYING.

But, they have ALWAYS fallen short, because they are operated by AMATEURS.

This is because NOT ONE industry-leader has any expertise, training, or background in matters concerning POLICY-MAKING & LOBBYING.

Hence, paying-members of trade associations are NOT being protected from harm by any of their trade associations.

Why would anyone in the « TURF INDUSTRY » be witless enough to give more & more money & support to an institution with a disappointing history of repeated failures, betrayals, & bad services ?!?!

For the second time in thirty years, millions & millions of dollars in donations have been squandered for the construction of more facilities for Guelph Turfgrass Institute ( GTI ) at the University of Guelph.

GTI-staff are employed by the government of Ontario. 

~

This is the province with a government that imposed HARMFUL-PROHIBITION against pest control products that are desperately needed to protect the urban landscape. 

~

Pest control products have been desperately needed by « TURF INDUSTRY » businesses in order to adequately control damaging pest of turf, to protect urban green spaces, & to retain residential & commercial customers. 

~

As a result, government of Ontario failed & betrayed legal & tax-paying businesses operating in the « TURF INDUSTRY ». 

~

Many of these businesses have employed thousands & thousands of Guelph-graduates who were unemployed because of Ontario’s HARMFUL-PROHIBITION.

More precisely, because of Ontario’s PROHIBITION, businesses operating in the « PROFESSIONAL LAWN CARE INDUSTRY » lost over $500 Million, with over 12,500 unemployed, many of them being Guelph-graduates.

In addition to a catastrophic loss of customers, Ontario’s HARMFUL-PROHIBITION cost these businesses millions & millions of dollars when they were forced to radically change their operations & re-brand their advertisements.

Like its government-employer, GTI-staff have also failed & betrayed their graduates in the « TURF INDUSTRY ».

GTI’s so-called « TURF EXPERTS » have operated as the instruments of government propaganda against pest control products. 

~

In essence, GTI’s so-called « TURF EXPERTS » have become the purveyors of subversive-propaganda for its pesticide-hating employer.

GTI’s so-called « TURF EXPERTS » fully-support the HARMFUL-PROHIBITION against pest control products needed by the « TURF INDUSTRY ».

In fact, ALL GTI-staff, basically, are mere government officials employed by the provincial government, & they have been told to « TOE-THE-LINE » on extremist narratives like HARMFUL-PROHIBITION

Consequently, staff at Guelph Turfgrass Institute ( GTI ) cannot be trusted & deserve no financial donations.

Overall, every government official, including GTI-staff, MUST support HARMFUL-PROHIBITION, or face termination from employment, & suffer the loss of the lucrative government pension plan.

GTI-staff have been forced to become malevolent anti-pesticide business-loathing extremists, posing as « BENEVOLENT TURF EXPERTS », who do the bidding of the government at the expense of the « TURF INDUSTRY » they are supposed to serve.

Additionally, GTI has fallen under further scrutiny because of its failures, betrayals, & bad services with the « TURF INDUSTRY ».

In the midst of financial carnage caused by both the HARMFUL-PROHIBITION & the Chinese pandemic, GTI had the unmitigated gall to ask, yet again, for more millions of dollars for new facilities.

The first facilities of the GTI were officially established in 1987. 

~

At the time, GTI asked the « TURF INDUSTRY » to pay-out millions of dollars to make the facilities a reality at the University of Guelph.

Construction began with the sod-turning ceremony in November 1991.

~

Unfortunately, government of Ontario owned the land the GTI was built on, with the lease expiring in 2018.

The PROFIT-HUNGRY provincial government decided not to renew GTI’s lease, preferring to use the land in real estate development. 

~

As a result, in 2017, GTI asked the « TURF INDUSTRY » for more money for more facilities  …  again. 

~

Should the « TURF INDUSTRY » have financially supported director Eric Lyons & GTI  …  again ?!?!

Should the « PROFESSIONAL LAWN CARE INDUSTRY » support GTI  …  again ?!?!

Should ANY industry provide financial support ?!?!

Observers are calling for the dismissal of Jerry Rousseau as executive director of Western Canada Turfgrass Association ( WCTA ).  Rousseau has no recognized expertise, no training, & no background in matters concerning POLICY-MAKING & PUBLIC AFFAIRS LOBBYING on pest control products.  WCTA-leaders must be frustrated because of Rousseau’s failures at almost everything !

Not surprisingly, CGSA-leaders have attracted suspicions of alleged conflicts-of-interest.

CGSA-leaders have already financially mis-managed our trade association, & they have now, seemingly, abandoned their members.

Perhaps we should not ascribe malice to CGSA-leaders for their failures, which can adequately be explained by incompetence & laziness.

MASSIVE VIOLATIONS BY BAD-BOYS  ―  Government officials in British Columbia ( BC ) indicate that the majority of golf course superintendents have been massively violating provincial pesticide laws & have been overwhelmingly non-compliant with BC’s Amended IPM Regulations.  According to officials, out of 318 golf courses, 192 DID NOT HOLD VALID PESTICIDE USE LICENSES.  Clearly, the golf industry has a continuous culture of deception in British Columbia.  The professionalism of these bad-boy-superintendent-violators who operate the offending golf courses must be seriously questioned.

BAD-BOYS OF AUDUBON GOLF  ―  The majority of BC golf courses that were certified-members of « THE AUDUBON CO-OPERATIVE SANCTUARY PROGRAM FOR GOLF »  were either non-licensed, out-of-compliance, or both  ―  these hypocritical golf courses have pretended being more environmentally-conscious when, in fact, their superintendents have massively violated pesticide laws.  Their credibility must be in serious doubt.

BAD-BOY ACTIVIST-SUPERINTENDENTS  ―  The majority of golf courses that have been managed by so-called « ACTIVIST-SUPERINTENDENTS » have also been out-of-compliance with BC’s Amended IPM Regulations  ―  these hypocritical activists have needlessly alarmed & enraged the public by spreading truth-challenged pesticide-hating propaganda.  As a result, their credibility has become non-existent.

MORE COMPLIANCE SCRUTINY  ―  BC government officials have indicated that they will continue to conduct compliance audit-inspections of golf courses, including those that have never been inspected.  In other words, they will be conducting HIGHER LEVELS OF COMPLIANCE SCRUTINY because of BC’s violator-superintendents.  Essentially, these bastжrds have attracted the wrath of the government apparatus against the ENTIRE golf industry.  These violators are just a bunch of #@!!% bastжrds !

THE FAILURE OF WCTA  ―  Western Canada Turfgrass Association ( WCTA ) represents the turf management profession, which includes golf course superintendents.  The leaders of WCTA, spear-headed by Jerry Rousseau, have failed to make any correct POLICY-MAKING & LOBBYING, resulting in a sad state of affairs for its members.  The MAJORITY of its member-superintendents have VIOLATED provincial pesticide laws.  As a result, these violators have PROVOKED HIGHER LEVELS OF COMPLIANCE SCRUTINY against the ENTIRE golf industry.  Observers hope that all violator-superintendents will be EXPELLED from WCTA.  Or, at the very least, WCTA must demand government ENFORCEMENT ACTIONS against all superintendents who violate pesticide laws.  If violator-superintendents can’t be good examples, then they must serve as horrible warnings.

Jerry Rousseau made a 30-minute presentation to this committee on October 26th, 2011.

Clearly, Rousseau was ill-prepared & incompetent with his presentation, failing to address any of the serious issues facing the professional lawn care industry & the golf industry.

In fact, he basically ignored the plight & imminent destruction of the professional lawn care industry.

~

Anti-pesticide activists are perpetuating myths about lawn care products, & Rousseau did nothing to challenge these myths.

That came as quite a shock to a lot of people.

Surprisingly  ―  or not so surprisingly  —  the more golf you play, the better your chances are of having a long life.

Part of that has to do with the fact that better golfers & people that play a lot generally tend to walk.

In 2009, for some unfathomable reason, this idiotic trade association, along with Canada Nursery Landscape Association ( CNLA ), decided to squander money & resources on the city of Vancouver campaign of anti-pesticide mis-information.

Idiotic trade associations like WCTA & CNLA have betrayed the « TURF INDUSTRY ».

Additionally, they have validated the anti-pesticide agenda, which can eventually lead to TOTAL PROHIBITION against pest control products & fertilizers.

They also validated Vancouver’s anti-pesticide agenda for HARMFUL-PROHIBITION by peddling nematode insecticide.

In Canada, nematode insecticide is one of many so-called green alternative products that are supposed to replace conventional pest control products.

Unfortunately, nematode insecticide does not work & is a dismal failure.

WCTA’s peddling of nematode insecticide dates back to 2005.

In 2005, WCTA, along with CNLA, commissioned a study of nematode insecticide for the control of European Chafer.

The MOE  [ ONTARIO MINISTRY OF THE ENVIRONMENT ]  recognizes that GOLF COURSES require high performance standards for the playing surfaces and require some pesticide use to achieve such standards.

The EXCEPTION to the PROHIBITION on the use of prescribed pesticides on GOLF COURSES is conditional upon complying with certain requirements.

How can anyone TRUST a trade association that managed its POLICY-MAKING, PUBLIC AFFAIRS LOBBYING, & FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES so badly that it was taken over by another association ?  In fall 2017, National Golf Course Owners Association ( NGCOA ) was allowed to TAKE-OVER the Canadian Golf Superintendents Association ( CGSA ).  Incredibly, a very small group of CGSA-leaders were allowed to make a settlement that UNCEREMONIOUSLY UNRAVELLED the great 50-year legacy of the CGSA.  Mr John B Steel & earlier CGSA-leaders would have been horrified.  This INSIDIOUS TAKE-OVER would BETRAY thousands of decent & hard-working members who rely on the « GOLF INDUSTRY ».  Not surprisingly, some CGSA-leaders attracted suspicions of alleged CONFLICTS-OF-INTEREST.  Furthermore, CGSA-leaders had already financially MIS-MANAGED their trade association, rendering it susceptible to TAKE-OVER.  Again, Mr John B Steel & earlier CGSA-leaders would have been horrified.  The TAKE-OVER proves, yet again, that modern CGSA-leaders are incapable of making any correct decisions.  The TAKE-OVER also validates the historic rivalry with club managers, whereupon superintendents are not considered competent in the management of financial affairs.  The AMATEURISH FINANCIAL MISMANAGEMENT of CGSA, which led to the TAKE-OVER, with losses more than 100,000-dollars, certainly DID NOT benefit the advancement of the « GOLF INDUSTRY ».  This MISCONDUCT by CGSA-leaders actually contributed to the WEAKENING of the image of the superintendent.  Because of this HISTORICAL MISCONDUCT, AMATEURISH CGSA-leaders CANNOT BE TRUSTED.

On golf course putting greens  ―  core aeration ( i.e. soil core removal ) must be performed by the superintendent once for every 10,000 rounds of play.  Beyond 25,000 rounds, non-core cultivation methods ( a.k.a. venting aeration ), such as solid-tine, must be used in the overall turf cultivation program throughout the summer months.  In addition, it is recommended that 20 per cent of surface area be removed every year.  With the optional quad tine holder, the Jacobsen GA-24 Greens Aerator can achieve a 1 x 1 inch hole pattern & pull more material during two core aerations than competitor products can pull in three.  With this quad tine holder, 11.9 per cent of material can be removed in two passes.  By comparison, the Toro Procore 648 will require 3 passes to achieve the same result since it will only remove 6.55 per cent with its 1.5-inch x 2.0-inch spacing.  The larger hole size  ―  & closer spacing between holes  ―  the better.  Changing from a 0.25-inch tine to a 0.50-inch tine will increase the surface area impacted by 400 per cent.  Using a 0.625-inch tine versus a 0.50-inch tine increases the surface area impacted by approximately 50 per cent.

Heroes struggle, which is why they are admirable  ―  & also why they need others’ cooperation, votes, or financial support.

The combination of good & strong leads to bravery, actions that run the risk or reality of self-sacrifice.

Hero stories can remind the golf industry of the leader’s past victories, but also of the powerful forces arrayed against him. 

~

Strong enough to protect himself, the hero’s goodness requires that he act on behalf of others as well. 

~

The golf industry NEEDS A LOBBY GROUP that will help attract better-motivated leaders that will become heroes.

Mr John B Steel was the first hero-president of Canadian Golf Superintendents Association ( CGSA ). 

~

He was the longest serving president from 1966 through 1968. 

~

One year later, in 1967, the « FIRST ANNUAL NATIONAL CONFERENCE » was held at the Skyline Hotel, in Toronto.
