Before getting into my letter I should identify myself as the owner of Supergreen Lawn and Tree Care. My credentials are 35 years of working with pesticides. At my last checkup I still seem to be healthy. My wife and I have five children and a number of grandchildren. As should any father/grandfather, I dote on my family, I would cause them no deliberate harm.
What credentials does Gideon Forman have? Well he has a Master's degree in philosophy from McGill University. He interned at The Nation – America's oldest weekly journal – and studied creative writing at the Banff Centre for the Arts. From 1997-2004, he was Vice President of Strategic Communications Inc., a firm that provides political consulting and fundraising advice to the non-profit sector. In 1999, Strategic Communications was named to The Profit 100 as one of Canada's fastest growing firms. He doesn’t have any expertise in pesticides. So where does he get his information on the harm caused by “cosmetic” pesticides, or any pesticides for that matter? You might find articles written by Dr. Gideon Forman, the Dr. has been dropped from his name for some time now.
In his first paragraph Gideon states that even Health Canada admits that lawn pesticides have risks. An excellent observation, as the Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment has he also noted the risks mentioned in commercials with over the counter drugs, not to mention the prescribed ones? Everything has an element of risk, and of course one might be concerned that the material I place on a yard might harm them (that’s why signs are posted after treatment). I have the same concern for flying, any number of things can go wrong and has the potential to harm me (my family), numerous others on the flight, and individuals on the ground (the aircraft has no sign posted asking me to stay off). I suppose both concerns could be addressed by staying at home (unless something happens to that aircraft, directly above my house).
His second paragraph cites his “doctors’” organisation; did you know that you too can join this organization? Yes you can, and it doesn’t cost that much either, however it doesn’t make you a doctor, sorry. My understanding is that most of the members are not doctors, and that CAPE represents less than 4% of Canadian doctors. Maybe “doctors’ organisation is stretching it a bit?
In the same paragraph he mentions the Canadian Cancer Society, an organisation that seems to have meandered away from its original intent. The CCS also says the risk is not worth taking, yet on its website, the society states there is no proven link between pesticides and cancer. If there isn’t a link, why would one of Canada’s largest charities use donor dollars to promote pesticide bans across the country, rather than direct them towards finding a cure?
Can we do better? I believe we are working towards that goal, certainly the material used today is much different from when I started. Many of today’s pesticides are species specific, meaning they target a specific insect, leaving beneficial insects alone. Many of today’s pesticides are “softer”, meaning they break down in the environment more quickly. We’ve come a long way in 35 years, and will undoubtedly continue to improve products in the future. Discontinuing pesticides due to perceived risks seems to show a paranoia where none need exist.
A thought just occurred to me, and I might be found eating my words if it’s true. Mr. Forman does CAPE, your “doctors’ organisation”, suggest to its medical field members that they refer their patients to Naturopaths or some such alternative practice for further treatment?

Forman’s RANTS have the effect of making children ANXIOUS and adults ALARMED AND ENRAGED because of his FABRICATIONS, his INNUENDOS, and his CONCOCTIONS OF IMAGINARY DANGER.
Scientific research shows, as reported through Health Canada’s VAST TOXICOLOGY DATABASE, that NO HARM WILL OCCUR when pest control products are used according to label directions.
The RISK ASSESSMENT of pest control products indicates that they are PRACTICALLY-NON-TOXIC.
Consequently, it is a fact that pest control products cause NO HARM, including chronic effects such as CANCER.
Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITIONS may be IMPOSED in British Columbia under the PRETEXT of protecting children, when, in fact, CHILDREN ARE NOT AT RISK.
Children across North America, even in those jurisdictions with NO pesticide bans, are all protected since these products are applied at VERY LOW DOSES and represent NO THREAT TO CHILDREN.
The SAFETY ASSESSMENTS of pest control products by Heath Canada and the Environmental Protection Agency take into consideration CHILDREN’s physiology, behaviours, and habits WHILE PLAYING ON TREATED GRASS.

Outrage Over Money That Could Help the Sick
Health Care Observers have expressed outrage over the misuse of donation money by Canadian Cancer Society.
The society’s 8-week anti-pesticide advertising campaign in newspapers across British Columbia will cost an estimated $250,000.
In total, Canadian Cancer Society has spent between $2,500,000 to $5,000,000 on this campaign.
Canadian Cancer Society claims it fundraises for only one reason ― to raise critical funds for its mission of eradicating cancer and improving the quality of life for those living with it.
Health Care Observers are concerned that the society is not living up to its mission, and the campaign money could have otherwise been used to save lives, prevent cancer, and help those who are living with the disease.
A province-wide pesticide ban is not supported by health and policy experts, and is not supported by local residents.
According to Dr. Len Ritter, the nation’s leading expert in the field of toxicology and pesticide safety, pesticides do not cause cancer, and there is no increase in cancer deaths in Canada when you consider that the population is aging and increasing.
The Fraser Institute, one of the top 25 leading think-tanks in the world, has said that the proposed BC ban is ill-conceived, and does not accurately reflect the current state of scientific knowledge.
A recent poll conducted by Canadian Consumer Specialty Products Association showed that the vast majority of BC residents are opposed to a pesticide ban, and they actually favour the continued use of these products around their homes and in public green spaces.
Scientific research shows, as reported through Health Canada’s vast toxicology database, that no harm will occur when pesticides are used according to label directions.
Children across Canada, even in those jurisdictions with no pesticide bans, are all protected since these products are applied at very low doses and represent no threat to children.
The safety assessment of pesticides by the Pest Management Regulatory Agency of Heath Canada ( PMRA ) takes into consideration children’s physiology, behaviours, and habits while playing on treated grass.
According to Dr. Ritter, Health Canada is a good system that is very thorough before it approves any pesticides.
"There are lots of unqualified people out there trying to undermine the efforts of the PMRA [ Health Canada ]," said Dr. Ritter.
